MOST COMMON FAKE DISNEY PINS

  • If you go pin trading in the parks, you've probably noticed that all the pin boards have pretty much the same 10 junk pins. This fact is thanks to the bulk fake/scrapper pin lots sold on eBay and Amazon.
    Hidden Mickey pins are the most commonly faked pins, so I thought I'd go over what these most commonly faked pins are. Just know, there are also MANY open edition and limited edition pins that are faked, but the amount of Hidden Mickey fakes are overwhelming. There are SO many other heavily faked pins, what I've covered is only a small segment of the greatest offenders.
    I really do hope that pin trading in the parks can become fun again, since Disney Pin Trading is such a fun and wonderful hobby!
    All photos of the pin boards shown in this video come from Everything Disney Pins.

    I've heard that Disneyland Paris is adopting new trading guidelines. They will only trade genuine Disney pins, it sounds like they are training their cast members to recognize fake pins. I'd call this a step in the right direction.

      Here's a question for you though....if a ton of people are buying these lots and trading them with cast members, it almost makes it a completely separate game than buying pins from the park, doesn't it? I buy the pins from the park that are special to me. I'd NEVER trade them. Heck I wouldn't even wear them around the park for fear of losing one. I figure the cast members throw out any they end up with that they know to be fake, and you know they have a huge supply behind the scenes to just pass out. My assumption is that any pin on a cast member lanyard is PROBABLY fake unless they got a bunch fresh backstage. Even so, I'm not sure they can tell....or where their supply comes from. I also think the companies that make the real ones...probably also make a bunch of extras and sell those cheap after the fact. Then there really is no difference between a fake and a real because they were both made in the same place but IDK. Do whatever makes you have fun. If it's super important that you know all yours are real, don't trade and just buy direct from Disney. If its for your kids to play a fun game with, buy a lot and throw out the obvious fakes and keep the good ones. I've bought 2 lots (I don't trade) and I threw out about half as either fakes or poor quality. The rest...yeah maybe they are all fake or maybe only some of them are...doesn't make them any less cool.

    The EPCOT logo series suffered from really bad quality control when they were released so telling fakes apart from the real ones is very challenging. Ironically some of the QC issues in early batches can help differentiate them from scrappers.

    I was on a Disney cruise around 10 years ago when a cast member who had gone above and beyond the call of duty every day I'd noticed him saw my lanyard I'd spent a whole childhood building and asked if I was open to trade. I said maybe, but only for a Haunted Mansion pin, which is still my favorite attraction.
    He began the hunt and two days later, there was a dance party. I attended on an upper floor to take videos of the costumed characters dancing, and later noticed one of my cherished pins fell off somewhere. It was a Rock N Rollercoaster pin I'd purchased with my small amount of souvineer money the first time I ever rode the coaster, and I was bummed out to lose it.
    That very day the cast member came to me with a hitchhiking ghost pin of Gus he'd found. He made a few offers, but I expressed that I'd just lost a pin I cared a lot about and wasn't willing to part with any he'd mentioned. He then gave the pin to me as a gift.
    I treasured it for years and still have it. I recently returned to Disney World for the first time as an adult and bought all the new pins I had dreamed of sporting as a child. This time in a backpack specifically for pin display, with a layer of plastic to protect and catch any loose pins.
    That led me to investigate pin trading further when I returned home. Made a few trades of genuine pins I purchased as a kid for pins I now know are fake. I saw two "chaser" pins of Ursula's chin and knew that couldn't have been a coincidence.
    That led me to Gus, one of my very favorite pins for the sentimental story alone. Sure enough, he's a fake dark blue and bright yellow.
    I don't doubt the cast member was as naive about his coloring as I was, but regardless I'll forever thank past me for not trading my director Kermit pin I'd bought on vacation to Los Angeles. He's worth over $100 now.
    Now if anything I'll keep that Gus pin because I know it's literally only worth anything to me.
    I hope that cast member is doing well, wherever he is.

      Probably should look on the Disney site and see if it is still in print. If it is a retired pin it tends to be a rare one that people won’t want to sell. I would get it and make sure that the paint isn’t worn, chipped, or discolored. Also, pins made before pin trading was a thing at the parks (1999) didn’t have the Mickey backs so that may be an indication of a rarity.

    I have a question for you I notice a lot of pins on the back read Disney China are these fake because most pins I find with Disney Made in China seen to be real. I hope you can answer this for me. Thanks for all the great info as now I have a bag of throw aways

      Aside from some really old pins, all Disney pins (fake or real) say China on the back. That's where all of them are manufactured.

    I figured the bulk sets on ebay were fakes. But im not a trader lol i just want to collect pins. 😂😂😂if they look nice and cute i dont care if they're fake.

  • @starandfox601
    @starandfox601 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I wonder if those fakes have lead paint.cause a lot of knockoff products on are known to test positive for lead cause they aren't held to any safety standards and are made cheaply as possible.
    so it might be good idea to get a lead test kit to test the paint of the fakes to see if they aren't only ruining trading but are posing a actual safety hazard.

    Are there fake booster sets?

    • @MagicallyEmily
      @MagicallyEmily  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      There are indeed some fake "sealed" booster sets. Most are of Disneyland Paris pins (the Paris Stitch, cupcakes, and holidays boosters are the most commonly faked). The fake boosters are always missing any actual barcode/price tag on them, and the pins have some tell-tale signs.

    • @tradingdisneypin135

      Krystarz this would be real. people don’t usually trade pins with spinners or springs because they’re generally more rare and expensive to purchase in the first place.

      disneypinblogs.com sells legitimate pins, he has a TH-cam channel that I believe is the same name. He posts events, releases too.

    At this point I just stay away from the hidden mickey’s for now two main reasons:
    1. I think the Mickey’s honestly take away from the actual pin
    2. Now I know they’re commonly faked
    What sucks is that Pins are so damn expensive and hard to get enough to trade without emptying your wallet 😫
