    I’m a Ford guy , and the GTHO is a great car , but I’m bowing down to to yet another Holden .. this SLR. Is a stunner ,
    A9X with Brock on board would have to be the greatest car in Australia’s history .. just is.

    I was being driven around in one of these as a kid right up until 2005 when my dad decided to finally get a Commodore to daily instead. And yes hes still got it to this day and in factory condition. My mum also has a LX SS hatch. Man i wish i can get trusted enough to drive one of them someday

    Great review of the Torana, Ross. Regarding the weight, they were around 1250kgs from factory. This car sure looked like a lot of fun to drive. The owner has done a great job doing up this Torana. It sure would be a head turner on the roads. Another great review from Melbourne. Keep it up. Thanks.

    Another great review, Ross. One of my family members bought a brand new genuine SLR5000 back in 74. Today it has 47,000miles on the clock. It sits in its own garage under blankets. Has the bolt on guards and American Racing mags and extractors and sports system. Other than that, it is dead stock original. And in perfect condition with the original motor and gear box. As new. He had been offered well over $260,000 for it back in the 90s. It's an original blue/aqua colour and never been painted. It's just an awesome, original car. I'd love it.

    LH had the square headlights, LX had the round lights and the A9X had the UC floor pans. LX hatch had a tent option that turned it into a camper.

    Torana, pronounced here as "Trana"" cool 70's Holden classic. I used to to these things back in the day because they used to flog the Ford's at Bathurst (77 was awesome however ). Now over 40 years on I respect and appreciate them as a true Aussie Icon. Like all old Aussie muscle cars they are mega expensive and made out of unobtainium for the average punter. I envy those that have them these days, not only Holden's or Valíant's or Falcon's. I love to have them all...

    Nice to see period correct aftermarket wheels on the torana so many people put wheeels on them from a more modern era and to us old guys they just look ugly. No mention of the foot operated parking brake new from the LH first time used in Australia as far as i know and the last for a long time the ratchets wore out on them. By todays standards the 308 in these things was not very powerfull so there was a lot of aftermarket gear on the market for them. I cut my teeth on them back in the late seventies early eighties whan working in a Repco machine shop.

    If you got a Sunbird was a UC Torana. Most of the LH - LX came out with a 6 cyl or V8 either auto or manual depending on how you ordered it. The LH came out with a white needle dash cluster and LX with a Yellow. I have had both of them. Great review Ross on one of true muscle cars of the 70s. 👍💯🇦🇺

    • @holyhell8308

      uc was a torana in aus if had a six, but a sunbird if it had the four, unless I'm wrong, here in nz it was a sunbird regardless, miss mine, lh and lx I think they may also have been sunbirds if they had a four

  • @nicholasgunson2945
    @nicholasgunson2945 ปีที่แล้ว

    Australia exported the torana to a few Asian countries with a 4cyl engine. The torana lx front end was used with an lj floor pan I believe on a chevy wagon. Was sorta just a mix and match of parts that they had in their country.

    Hey I brought one back in the 80s my first car I was 19 I took a bank loan for 11 thousand it was mirror black and silver around the car it was a show car rarely driven LX 1977 308 it was the horniest car on the road a real headturner I put it on the dyno a week after I got it and man it was insane the engineer took me for a test run when I picked it up , he goes to me this car is the wildest I've driven he goes it scares me so be real carefull brother it's now dangerous . I wrote it off a month later couldn't handle the power of the V8 used to step out all over the place in traffic it was embarrassing I couldn't control the fukn thing . Anyway I'm now 55yrs old and outta pocket 400:thousand at today's price it was stamped with origanal A9x number inn the driver's side floor rail thanx and also the best looking Australian muscle car ever produced even today on the street theyre miles ahead of anything on the road sexy machine hey fellas and the girls love riding shotgun inn them to be seen in a fishnet stocking with dragways and bf Goodrich tyres running it down the highway hahaha ✌️ take it easy Holden fans king of the road Torana.

    the Torana LH - LX were designed from the start to be touring cars! Holden had no other purpose for them they took the production racing rule book and designed this around it, these were horrible to daily, horrible to tow with, horrible to road trip with but show them a race track and it was game on!
    as a Ford man our consolation prize is that the next year after Peter Brock set a new lap record in the A9X, Dick Johnston broke that lap record on his qualifier lap in the wet in a car designed to be a Taxi! 😜

    No way that thing makes 430 RWHP! I owned a genuine SLR 5000 back in the late 70's to 90's. It had a professionally built engine with all of the good go fast parts. It was not stroked though, and it made 330 engine horsepower.

    • @peterrichardson1386

      A 355 stroked engine could easily make high horsepower with the parts these days. It’s not the 70’s anymore.

    • @Hezath
      @Hezath ปีที่แล้ว

      lol, my Torana with a Holden V8 stroker makes 435hp at the rear hubs and idles at 700rpm. Cam is only 238/238@.050" and you barely even feel it, my grandma could drive it. Times have changed a little.
      My only reservation is that Ross said the car didn't feel fast. With a real >400hp at the rear hubs you're literally able to run 11's, and he said it didn't feel fast. Maybe the claimed hp is bullshit.

    With 430hp at the wheels it should be in the 11's at least, no slouch at all. It did seem like you were short shifting and that you could have revved it out a lot more. But, I understand that it's an old, valuable car and I'd probably be reluctant to give it everything.

    I bought a Persian Sand auto slr 5000 new and could not wait to get rid of it. It was the worst car I have ever owned , no leg room in back seat, 9 gallon fuel tank for a v8, drivers door used to open at top so you could stick your hand out of it at about 60 mph, two big molding dents in back spoiler standard apparently as replacement was the same, horn used to go off by itself in hot weather , one gauge was broken from new sold still broke as they could not fix it, hopeless road holding I used to admire GT Falcons when I saw them for their road holding . Sold car after 18 months I even had trouble getting rid of it , no car yards wanted them all said they had two or three out the back. Sorry to tell you boys but they were junk compared to Gtr , Xu1, Gt falcons.

    Yeah had the earlier torana. Thou you sat to one side when steering it. Like the viva it was based on. Wasnt a big fan when it began racing at Bathurst. It was the start of down sizing the cars. Racing was better with the big falcons and holdens , valiants. The 2 door falcon was a big car so was the charger. The torana was a bit of a toy.

    I remember them. They were not that fast. Even though they felt that way cause the nose used to go up and down so much. A265 Charger was faster. The factory 308 was not a powerful engine at all. It was a a pretty weak V8. The 350 chev or the ford 351 were the pwerfull V8s then.

    The thing that annoys me about Holden is they are basically derived from designs that were originally conjured up by opel and vaxhaull / saying that they are a unique car might be partially true but there’s no denying the lack of originality in rnd when compared to ford you only have to look at the opel omega and Cadillac Sentra to see the resemblance in the latter years, yet ford spent billions and took a risk on an original design like the AU and eventually reached a high point with the BA / to be honest I think that’s more commendable and yes Peter brock was a legend but he basically won races in a rebadged opel
