In 1996 Greene was a skinny young man who couldn't even make it to the US trials' final. A year later he packed like 15 lbs of muscles and almost came close to break the WR. That's how you know what's going on in this sport. Every year new young sprinters show up who run in the low 9.80s and even high 9.7s now
@@LandoNorris-o5sfor me strange thing its about Bailey after 96 What happened to him ? He loose all time even hes the golden olympic just one year before .. until his end
they haven't that much , only if you compare everything to bolt.... for the record fred kerley became world champion on the exact same time of 9'86 last summer in eugene
@@muggensan8611 Well Fred really a 2/4 guy that can run the 1 so he’s gifted to run such times. Bolt not only Bolt but i remember Gatlin, Ryan Bailey, Blake, and even Gay running this time while shutting down in rounds. I used bolt because it was more impressive to me
@@Kenaz2226 well... ryan bailay pb is 9.88 , but yes gay blake gatlin or powell ran under 9.8 ( sometimes) but 9.86 would still have been a good race for them , and i think it's still a world class chrono , it's not like the perf of the guys of the 90's would worth nothing today you know , at least not on the 100m , that haven't changed that much ( i you put bolt aside)
Nope. He was supposed to win the 200m. Greene was supposed to win the 100m. Ato stuck to the script. This is pro sports. It's all about the show and drama and entertainment.
@costa I agree but I don't think you can discount fast starts as any less of a skill than top speed. Bailey was notoriously bad at starts. It probably cost him this race and from going sub 9.80 but it's a big part of sprinting. Greene didn't have the top speed of Bailey but he was a great starter so I think you have to give credit to him for perfecting that skill.
no question, Bailey would have won that shit if it weren't for his injury. I always watch this and laugh at Ato Bolden, who is all cocky is claiming the world record would fall to him and then his ass finishes off the podium but he pretends to be so happy for Mo Greene. what a dick.
Does anyone else think that starter was way too fast from set to gun, caught Bailey off guard, probably told Greene they would do it, let him get a rolling start. 😂
Michael Johnson talking up Ato Bolden (“it’s his to lose??). Not giving Donovan a chance (to whom of course he infamously lost to in that 150m race, pulling up lame after knowing he wasn’t going to win). Never very good as a commentator.
I've watched this final so many times and it never ceases to amaze me
All eyes were on Ato boldon and Donovan Bailey.. But Maurice Greene delivered and then started the rise of his career
I remember sitting alone watching this live in my Dad's living room in Jos.

Well, the fastest man of all time has an even bigger leap than that, went from running 10.05s to running 9.58 in less than a year.

The beginning of Maurice Greene's 5-year reign !!!
Great moment for Greene and Bolden. Montgomery not required!
Man even in the year 2022 i still like this

Bolt won it! He broke the WR on that very meets.

all the talk about boldon and he finishes fifth

that means nothing ...even more on 100m

I still feel Donavan bailey would have won if he was not injured
I've always wondered what happened to Mike Marsh in this race!
Disappointing indeed
What happened was...he got left from the start!
I wish they did poling today
If bailey had a better start, he could have won and possibly broke the world record again

There's what coulda, shoulda, woulda happened, and then there's what actually happened.
