I was lucky enough to see Ossian perform this song in Haines, Alaska in 1983. We sat in the balcony of the small hall and as this cloud of magical sound filled the room I was transported to some time and place I still haven't fully returned from.
I had the pleasure of meeting Tony and the band at my neighbor's house on Barra Glen Road in Cape Breton. As a busker, I had been playing their stuff for years. I only wish I had a bit of talent! He *_[RIP]_* and they were quality persons ... gotta luv it.
I just LOVE this track. The musicians are all virtuosos. They are wonderful in this precious track. It is something really special. I love all the comments too.

Too bad so few know of this talented young man's career.
I always said this was Scottish Opera. I met Tony once and he was such a gentle man. I'll never forget our conversation.
Tony Cuffe was great. I miss him. A voice from my youth (via Ossian’s music).

Tony Cuffe is the singer. He died young of cancer, sadly, but he was marvelous.
this songs always make me happy , don't know why , as if a want to start beggin straight away.
So Nice for my ears!
Tae the Beggin' is on old Bothy Ballad from Aberdeenshire and has precious little to do with 'English vagabond ballads'.
There's no question they are related. Compare the various versions.
Im loving it
No it's an old Scottish song based on King James making Begging a legal trade.
