My heart aches when I see photos of the streets of London, Paris and NY in the 30s, 40s, and 50s. People were so well dressed and took pride in their appearance. I can only dream to see that again in my lifetime.

I am sorry, but you will not see that ever again for a very simple reason, it was part of a world that disappeared. History never repeats itself exactly; I mean there will be crises and wars, that will never change, but the dress and the manners keep changing, in our case for the worse. The spirit of our age is awful; why do you think people dress and behave in such a disgusting, vulgar manner?

I've just bought two stunning bespoke vintage suits from Savile Row, a blue DB for £79 and a charcoal chevrons for £125 on Ebay. I took them to a well-known tailor in London for a touch-up. He told me I had £10,000 worth of clothes in my hands. Almost all of my costumes are bespoke and between 30 and 60 years old. Turn this into an amazing opportunity.

In my area of the State of Alabama, a shirt with a collar and a University of Alabama emblem on it is formal attire. A few years ago I was wearing work jeans, work boots, a Wrangler work shirt and an old sport coat that the lining was coming out of, and when I stopped at a job site to check on my crew the concrete finisher asked me if I had been to a funeral. He was serious. Not to long ago we asked a couple to go to a restaurant with us for dinner. Nothing fancy. The wife called my wife and asked, “David is not going to wear a sport coat is he?” Pisses me off I have to dress down to match others instead of them stepping up their game. Thanks for letting me vent!😂.

One interesting observation that I have made is this... I am in a number of Facebook groups that are completely unrelated to sartorial style, mostly classic vehicle and local history groups, and these feature old photos of how places changed, or pictures of what are now regarded as classic cars shown in streets when they were new cars, and I very often read people's comments that say "nice to see so many smartly dressed people in these shots", or "how elegant everyone looks just going to the shops" etc etc. This would suggest that there is an underlying desire for a return to dressing better.... Meanwhile while we eagerly await that to happen, I saw 3 people in their pyjamas in the supermarket at 6.30pm yesterday 😢

A very interesting and insightful video here, Ash. I hope you're right about the uber-casual trend waning. I live in a small town about 2 hrs north of Toronto. The lack of standards is disheartening. My uniform for leaving the house and running errands, etc., is pressed khakis, button down collar or polo shirt, and clean/polished loafers. I might as well go around in a tuxedo. Most men are wearing jeans, baggy t-shirts, sweat pants, hoodies, or camouflaged hunting clothes. Oh, and dont forget the ubiquitous ball cap. The other issue is the grooming. Men are unkempt, unshaven, and often possibly unwashed. I actually get asked why I'm dressed up. I went to a funeral last Saturday, and I was appalled at the grooming and attire of many of the people there. People have become so obsessed with their own comfort that they've forgotten that their appearance is meant to show respect to others, and to reflect the importance of the occasion.

Great news Ash. I have also been seeing this trend. When i was a lad when we went shopping downtown we always got dressed up. I wear a tie when i have appointments. My investment agent says I am his best dressed client. It really doesn't take much to step up your style and still be comfortable. It will also boost your self confidence and self respect. I was chatting with a gentleman in the store the other day waiting for the wife. And he said "do you always dress like that? " I said most of the time to which he replied "keep It up". Ash, I agree with your observations on the casual way men dress when going out. It’s a shocker. If there is a couple the woman has taken care to get dressed with jewellery and a smart outfit. I think that quietly hidden from the common person is 1. Increased cost of food.2. Increased cost of power 3. increased cost transport 4. Increased cost housing 5. Increased cost of entertainment 6. Increased cost of child rearing…7. Increased cost of alcohol 8. Increased cost of living overall. all these increases have not been met with wage and salary increases that come anywhere these $$ increases. The upshot of these increases is that people look for pinching here..pinching there. This has resulted in the great upswing of cheaper clothing. And people have flocked to this….

    • @maceawilder
      @maceawilder 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Style and quality are two different things. A cheap dress shirt and t shirt are the same cost and both can be bought 2nd hand. You can dress up for the same price of dressing down. It's a cultural change than an income change. Look at style during the great depression. People still dressed with class while pinching their pennies. Not to discount present economical issues. They exist. But they are not the cause of modern style.

I hope you are right. I keep dressing well. And one man at church has added an ascot to his outfit (his wife pushed him). And @finger351 is right. All prices are up. My estimate is that our food costs have doubled in a year. And housing in Metro D.C. is out of reach of young people. There are no "starter" houses. Our house, purchased in 1975 for $90,000 is now valued at $1.3 million. And if we sold it we would probably get much more than that, demand is so high. Doesn't leave much for buying a suit, much less bespoke. And over the years, a lot of men's clothing stores have either disappeared or be bought up by huge companies (usually Macy's). Well, I'll keep using Ebay and dressing well.

Can’t help but feel that we’re just at the end of the casualization trend of over a century now. Fedoras were casual in the 20s, formal in the 50s and mostly unseen now. Suits were somewhat informal for decades, it was morning dress that was proper for daily white collar life. I believe we should try to dress more elegantly, it’s excellent for humans to do so psychologically, but it’s not a new tend over all.

Its a shame Ash, the disappearance of sartorial standards in the UK is disappointing. I was in a meeting in Canning Town in the East End of London last week. As anyone will know who is familiar with the East End, its rough. Added to that however, the masses of people walking round dressed in tracksuits and even pyjamas is depressing. Anyhoo, as i was leaving the meeting, i passed a group of gents in their late 30s to 40s outside of a pub, all were casually chatting outside, but each one of them was dressed smartly, suits, waistcoats and polishhed shoes. In a strange way, it gave a sense of respect to the area and reminded me of the old East End. Strange how a bit of style can brighten up such a downtrodden area.

11:05 I don't think you'll find this is a recent trend. Two examples; almost 20 years ago, I wandered into a discount variety shop (made in China homewares) in a mid range shopping centre. The owner, a Chinese man probably in his fifties, appeared out of nowhere and very politely wanted to assist me with some reduced items I was looking at. He was dressed in a high quality three piece suit. Going back to my teens in the 1980s studying Japanese and Mandarin, I remember the Chinese husband of the Chinese woman who taught Mandarin turned up at the class one day (a Saturday), dressed in a very nice three piece suit.

Much as I want to be that stylishly dressed man about Town, I often need to be far more utilitarian in my day to day attire. So far today, I am wearing technical trousers and a hooded sweatshirt. I can though, still turn the "style dial" up to 11 when required. In my employ, I am surrounded by the Country's future. I despair at what is deemed appropriate attire to wear in public/ an educational setting. Our senior leadership do wear suits (some really badly fitting and cheap looking) but setting a standard of sorts. I hope that the increase in suit ownership continues to increase.

Thank you for the good news!
I have to concur, but I've been seeing this for quiet a while now.
Most specifically in the younger gents who ask me questions because I work next door to their school and my direct superior's son who fairly regularly consults me (and this channel among others) for sartorial advice in classic menswear.
It might very well be a cyclic generational occurence, though my father was always rather dapper dressed for work (he was a medical examiner) and so where both my grandfathers but this lack of generational jump (I'm just so a millenial, born '84) might very well be an effect of my late father's early death in '01 (which left me with an arsenal of suits strangely enough fitting me quiet well, though 23 years down the road there's not that much left of this "starter pack" - the beautiful Hugo Boss three-piece was pretty much cut to pieces in my "skull vs. 25ton lorry" accident e.g....) but I'm not sufficiently knowledgeable in this field to psychologize around this.😉

I live in Bermuda, which consistently has the highest cost of living in the entire world - it is insane! However, the prices in thrift stores are much lower than in the US. I have scored brand new Gucci, Hermes, Tom Ford, Ferragamo, and Thomas Pink ties, all for $2 each. A Baracuta G12 for $4, a grey 100% cashmere Harries Whitfield long overcoat for $30, vintage tweed jackets for $4, etc, etc. I do hope that we have hit the bottom of the casual dressing fad and things are going to improve.

Great analysis as ever Ash. I’m one of those hybrid workers post pandemic that spend part of the week in the office and even pre-pandemic the standards of dress in the office environment were in decline. I regret to say my attire standards were sub-standard pre-pandemic but as I saw others “give up” trying to dress appropriately it spurred my inner punk rock to rebel in the other direction, particularly after looking at the benefits of wearing quality menswear over cheap fast fashion. I now go the whole hog the other way and wear a smart blazer (usually tweed), tie, pocket square and of course smart well polished shoes. It’s received many positive comments, “dapper” is the usual word, and my hope is it’ll encourage others to wear “suitable office attire” and maybe get my workplace looking a bit more professional.

So much has changed since the times when nawab of pataudi captained indian cricket team.

Some great points in this video. I have a vintage made in England Aquascutum Irish Tweed jacket that is simply magnificent, and it is sad to hear of their demise. Glad to hear about Marks and Spencer, I have a navy cashmere scarf from them that is high quality and simply lovely to wear in the cooler months (and worn by Daniel Craig in Spectre no less..). It is my deep hope that people start to recognise the real sustainability and value in investing in higher quality clothing and support these heritage makers. Keep up the good work!

Great video Ash. I think your comments on bespoke suiting are revealing. As the rich keep getting richer and can afford money no object stuff, the majority struggle with the cost of living. Therefore anyone but the top clothing companies are going to struggle with sales.
Buying second hand or even from an outlet does not help the company’s bottom line and so all but the crème or those with huge corporate marketing budgets are going to struggle.
My own view is to try to make do with what I already have, focus on quality rather than marketing hype, buy less and buy local when I can. This might not help those traditional brands but there are positive signs out there that some are adapting. For example I recently bought a wonderful pair of Loake boots from the newly opened store in the city I call home.

Another good brand that went in the 1990ies is retailer DUNN & Co. They went back to the end of the 19th century. They were a household name and you could walk into any of their many High Street shops. It was not the epitome of sartorial elegance, but decent, conservative and mid-priced(!) British country wear that was made to last.

Here's my viewpoint ash, OUR aspiration to help people dress well is truly sincere and commendable.
But the way a person dress has to do with his way of thinking
And as long as there is an increase of moral degradation in the society
    Lacking principles and moral guidance
Such as things that corrupts the mind of many such as self indulgence, materialsm, pornography, immorality, and violence etc
Additionally, lack of happiness and no real purpose in life
Honestly, these are continuing getting worse with no cure
And sad to say, as a result dressing well will slowly loose it's grip in human society
    Matters will only get worse.

Old money is in now as well for better or worse. To a degree, I have an apprehension for this ‘trend’ because the youth are following it for the wrong reasons. It is now meant to exude an impression that they have generational wealth as opposed to the idea of being a classically well-dressed person. On the side, more people are getting dressed more formally.

As the old adage has it, you dont chase after a bus once you've caught it, and in recent years its been been pretty easy here in the 'West' to catch the comfortable bus ? Now things are getting tighter it'll take more effort to get on board, and as Ashe points out, upping your standard of dress can give one an easily achieved head start. Certainly China has become a big market for dressier clothes, and the big name firms here in the UK that have bitten the dust, have had their names bought up by far eastern firms to a great extent. I'd differ with Ashe on one point though, the East Asian economies are not adopting sartorial style to do business in the West, they're doing it for reasons of competition within their own markets ? And the level of competition in Asia is as many here in the West are finding out, on a whole higher level. :)

I hadn't considered dressing with style from the perspective you discuss here, Ash, but the reality is that in my little community in southern Ontario, wearing a jacket and tie on a daily basis makes me the biggest non-conformist in town.
Unfortunately, I fear that fashionable men's clothing will never return for the middle class, much less the working class, and that the rise in demand for bespoke suits and shoes speaks primarily to the growing gap between rich and poor in our societies.
As I've said before, one of the only upsides I can see in this entire situation is the fact that a retired school teacher like myself can build a quality wardrobe on a limited budget by haunting thrift stores and online platforms like eBay and Poshmark.
Perhaps if I lived in a bustling urban center instead of a small retirement community I would see more evidence of the uptick in men's sartorial style from the rock bottom that I witness every day.
Interestingly, even where I live, at least a quarter of the women continue to dress quite smartly, with a real sense of personal style and attention to detail. -But, at least in my lifetime, women have always been more interested in dressing fashionably than have men.

This is a fair point. I fall into number three, and I think more and more younger people do, too. I think there's more of a focus amongst some of being respectable. Suiting conveys a greater message in one's life that they have things together; they're disciplined, care about how they come off to others, take their duties seriously, have self-respect, and, like it or not, probably have more money. Sweatpants don't give off the impression of dependability, self-care, and respect. True or not, we're more likely to assume that someone in a suit is more well educated and wealthy. I think more young people are capitalizing on this countercultural idea of maturity and class - it's far easier to seem that way today than before.

Things go in cycles, and generations rebel against the “stuffiness” of their parents. We Boomers and Gen X wanted to express our “freedom” and “individuality” by dressing in jeans and t-shirts. As today’s youngsters decide to express themselves there is a good chance that they will look at the slobs of the early 21st century and decide to reject that by dressing better. Jordan Peterson resonates with some of that generation, and he makes a case for dressing up, and has turned himself into quite the popinjay, too. So, there’s hope. Personally, I used to be perpetually dressed in jeans, a t-shirt and a leather jacket; but now, I chose proper trousers, dress (or casual dress) shirts, jackets and proper shoes, just so as not to look like all the obese, overgrown-toddlers wobbling about.
