I think one of the things the duffer brothers nailed was the mental deterioration of Jonathan and Joyce. It’s actually heartbreaking to see these characters slowly deteriorate mentally and physically.
I’m only 11 minutes into this video and already Joyce has been ragged on several times. I really think the Sims team missed the point of her character. Every scene, including the ‘frazzled mum buys a new phone and asks for an advance’ scene, adds depth to her character. She is probably the best and most empathetic character in S1. Without her slowly unravelling over the loss of her son, we would only have the friends trying to find Will in a more detached way. We NEED her to empathise with and every scene is KEY.

To be fair cinema sins were very positive of Winona's acting ability. She's playing Joyce extremely well which is why she's annoying the viewers.
