I've had a life full of music and The McCalmans started it all for me. Although I loved The Beatles, Searchers etc my first trip to an Edinburgh folk club was fantastic when the Macs were singing 'The Kerry recruit', Santiano, Sally Free and Easy, Willies' gone to Melville Castle, Lord of the Dance and so many more. I formed a 'McCalman's type' folk group and never stopped playing at age now 76. They were the inspiration to me. Loved them.
Just looking at the comments ,,,,how on earth can anyone give a thumbs down tae one of the best harmony groups of all time ,,,,,derek Moffat and nick keir ,,,,very very sadly missed ,,,,
@@AndroidUserCFB thanks for your input ….but …..they annoy the tits of me and I know I’m wastin my breath over these tosspots , there’s an LP by the mc Colman’s , strings and things , and a song called the weaving song , derek Moffat and the boys at their brilliant best . enjoy it if you have the time , and I’ll get back intae ma wee box and be a nice human being , for once ….thankyou
Smuggler, in the McCalmans' version one of my favorite folk songs. I was fortunate to experience the McCalmans as a child (1976-78?) at a folk music festival in Almindingen forst, Bornholm, and again in 1989 I think, both in Denmark. The McCalmans is probably the best vocal band I have ever heard. Thanks for uploading.
I remem ber doing my usual friday spot in the waverly bar in Edinburgh when these three guys asked if they could do a few numbers. glad to get a wee breather I said yes.that was the begining of a long friendship with the tightest harmony group I have ever heard.I became good friends with Derek particularily and shared a flat with Derek and Hamish for a while, great parties, great music and great pals.miss those times.
Jeeze.. near bring a tear to a lad's eye... memories of the Elbow Room in Kirkaldy, the Osprey Rooms in Aviemore, Sandy Bells in Edinburgh, The Ship in the 'Ferry... and folk like Hamish Imlach, Danny Kyle, Iain Mackintosh, Tich Frier, Rab Noakes, Dick Gaughan, -man that takes me back. R.i.P. Derek Moffat... an absolute 'god' to me when I was young..Thanks for posting. Ian McC ... you still have the best Scots folk voice ever. All the best.
Remembering max and danny. I heard this at the wedding reception. My first thought was the girl has weird taste . We were teenagers lol. Rest well both of you.
Omg! This brings me back to 1971. It's makes me weep and happy. My parents organized with the org.: Youth and Music a folkfestival in Eindhoven NL 1971. The Mccalmans and Danny Kyle stayed in our house. I was nine and my brother 7 years old. I remember the next morning that all the left shoes where hurled away in the gardens of the neighbours. Thanks Kyle, mister Poodle. (lol) I work for Folkwoods Eindhoven. I hope one day to meet The Mccalmans again on dutch soil. Thanks for the good memories
A wonderful version of a great song. They build up the layers superbly with the additions of instruments and harmony. I have heard them live on several occasions. What a great act . Even better live than recorded and very amusing. Other excellent songs on all of their L.P.s.
Every word you say is true -- and so well deserved. I used to see and hear them in the Cumbernauld theatre club back in 1970. Their songs are still as fresh and new in my mind as then. Delightful harmonies I will never tire of.
Check out The Stowes new single which is their version of Smuggler. Kevin Brinn does a proper job with the Scots-English! Very interesting tae hear a Cornishman sing a Scottish folk song!
brought up with the Maccalmans from an early age, my dad made us listen to them, and we learned to love them, took my children to see them in East Kilbride.
Excellent harmonies. Found these guys after a friend requested a song of theirs was played at her wake. Cheery dave had posted it for her. The lads really are excellent
Smuggler: brilliant song. But I've listened to that second bit about 15 times in a row now. Anybody got lyrics on that? I don't want to have to navigate away from the video cause the music stops! Can't be having that.
die version aus dem englischunterricht, hab ich jedoch nur einmal gesehn hier auf youtube, aber diese hier is auch ganz nett. du bist aber nicht wirklich 21 oder?
Long live all the oldies! One of the finest bits of music on earth.

I always liked the McCalmans. This song says it all. The vocals, the English Concertina, the mandolin , guitar . Brilliant.

Because you get nice people on TH-cam (or any other online, err, "community")
.. and then there's the inevitable "Tosspints". Just ignore them.
