When I left to go to college, there was no heat in the house in the winter or hot water. There was never any food in the house. We were barely getting by. We lived in one of the poorest neighborhood in the city. I stayed in school because the conditions back at home were worst. At school at least I had a safe place to lay my head and food to eat. I had a lot of friends who dropped out of school because they had stable homes to go back to. I remember being so jealous of my friends. Now that I'm out here on my own I'm glad I stayed in school. I have a good life now, and I don't struggle to pay my bills. I even took care of my mother up until she died. My older sister had a baby at 16 and went to college with her baby. She is doing well now too. It's amazing how far my family has come. My nephews don't have any idea what it is like to struggle, but I also notice they are not as driven to succeed. They don't understand what it's like to have to fight for something because you have no other options. As bad as poverty can be, it can also be a great motivator to change your life. Never give up on yourself people. You can lift yourself up out the pits of hell.
