The Mas56 is the gun we had during our army classes back in the late 80s when the "Service National" was still a mandatory for any french guy at that time.
Heavy, rugged, powerful and very accurate.
I liked it but not as much as the Famas.

Absolutely! When I did my military service in 1982 in Périgueux I fired the MAS 56. Unfortunately for budgetary reasons they used plastic bullets, the "balplast"! A real piece of crap that clogged the barrel of the gun. Then in Libourne in February 1983 we "perceived" the first Famas... another world!

A friend in the heyday of surplus arms got his hand on two French MAS 49 rifles. One was converted to 7.62.x51mm and the other remained in the French caliber. After dozens of malfunctions with the 308 mod, he got a new French barrel from Sarco and had a gunsmith install it. Now he had two rifles with very little ammo, but at they were reliable. About a decade he ran into an estate sale from a Francophile who had bought over 25 French rifles (and handguns) from a Chassepot to a MAS 49 series during the surplus days back in the late 80's. But the kicker was the 10,000 rounds of French ammo. A combination of Lebel 8x50r, 7.5x54mm, and some French Long pistol ammo (7.65x20mm). The estate agent was trying to sell it and no one wanted (I guess not everyone loves old French stuff (unless it's Cognac). So, he got it (after some patient waiting) for a fantastic price. He's still going thru the remainder of the ammo and reloads for the rest of the guns. Sometimes you get lucky. All I've ever found is a half full bottle of Napoleon Brandy (it wasn't even the good stuff) at an estate sale.

I managed to grab a MAS 36/51 from a closing gun store's private collection for $700 about a year ago now. he said it was never fired (which i doubt.) and was absolutely caked in dust and packing grease. It came with a rubber buttstock & bayonet, the import marks were above the name on that ridge at 6:06 as well as Helpfully noting that the French rife does indeed shoot 7.5 French. shoots beautifully after a few days of washing out and re-oiling it, and the bayonet has given me nothing but amusement as its the right size to use as a magic wand to shout "AlaKaBlam!" before blowing a 1Litre Shasta sky high.

Beautiful rifles. I saw these at OWS about a week ago. The prices on these seem to have been jacked way up since then. I was considering getting one or both, but not for what they are asking for now. Smart marketing on their part, but sucks for poor guys like me.

Funny enough just yesterday i used your book to identify a Mas 36 at my little local gun shop!
Its a mid 1945 in really nice condition with a 1946 stock on it. It had all the post war modifications except it still had the milled trigger guard.
Unfortunately the replacement and original stock must have been damaged cause they stortened the foreguard, got rid of the top wood, put the wrong barrel band, and lost the bayonet and cap. Real unfortunate cause the rifle is in great condition otherwise. Not sure if ill buy it they had 800$

My 36 came from a LGS in southern Maine ~20 years ago. No where near as nice as Ian's, there was some very light surface rust and the stock definitely has character, but it also only cost $125.

Without chipoting, a useful safety reminder that tge cartridge for grenades is NOT at all like the blank cartridge used for training with a restrictor on the muzzle (the "BTB"). I suspect firing one with the restrictor, instead of a blank, would make the rifle explode.

So the principle behind the grenade launcher at 07:58 isn't a million miles removed from the Japanese WW2 knee mortar - the angle of the rifle stays the same and the range is set by altering the muzzle velocity.

I've been sort-of wanting a MAS 36 for a while. I think they look neat. The 7.5x54 has always held me back. I'm simply lazy, and don't want to source another round. Of course, I've looked for FRF2s to solve that problem. They cost more than my car does, though.

@Forgotten Weapons Ian mentions that governments clean up and store older weapons just in case. I wonder what the oldest issue rifle that the US Government still has stocks of "just in case?" M1 Garand? M1903 Springfield? M1917 Enfield? Is there a warehouse somewhere with a bunch of Krags in boxes? (If so, they're in the next aisle over from the Ark of the Covenant.)

Oh, there is an increment of over 380. I think it goes up to 400 meters. At least, it is marked, and that's what made me think of the range and logic of adding an additional mark after 380. I guess 400 isn't marked since there was no space over there to actually, you know: write it down.
I also could be wrong, since there might be a logic of writing down the number bellow the mark, but with the positioning of the numbers my own inner logic seems to dictate that... the number that is underlined indicates range. I trust Ian though, just not sure which way should I approach this: does the number correspond to the marking increments above or bellow the number?

How did you pass up a grenade-ready MAS 36? Cause that dummy round doesn’t work on the MAS .223 😉
