This is fun to watch. I grew up Tiki as my Iberian grandfather was born on Kauai and came to the United States before Hawaii was a state, literally on a banana boat. I have all of the books you mentioned. They are on display throughout my house. Oh and Trader Vic’s in Emeryville is only about a 20 minute drive from my home.
I am envious of your proximity to Trader Vic's! My wife and I took a trip to the Bay Area in 2021 specifically to visit Trader Vic's when it was in danger of losing its lease. Of course, we made time to visit a number of other tiki destinations around the bay!
Great episode! My library has grown in ways I never expected when I first got into tiki 24 years ago. I have books on Oceanic Arts (not the Bob and Leroy), the culture of the Maori, PNG, and Hawaii, the architecture of Polynesia, and a slew of cocktail recipe books. What I thought was a cool niche hobby is a much deeper, wider ocean than I ever imagined.
Cool - I'll have to get that book! Also, a thought from a fellow TH-cam creator - you absolutely need to get the words 'tiki bar' into your channel name and every video title. Searchability! Cheers! Steve - The Reno You Know
Unfortunately, this Tiki Pop 2nd ed. is the only Sven book I have because of the affordability. It is a great book, and a must have for any Tiki collection. The Book of Tiki and Tiki Modern are also a must haves, as well as Smuggler's Cove and Beachbum Berry's books. Thanks for your take (scratching the surface) on the vast historical roots of Tiki. These books are essential to any tiki bar, as they provide so much food for thought for decorating, mixology, and the deeper appreciation of the style for all tikiphiles. Mahalo and Happy New Year!
On the bright side, Tiki Pop may well be the best of Sven's output (I've yet to get Art of Tiki and Palm Springs Tiki, but they're on the list). Tiki Pop has way more content than Book of Tiki.
Darn .... I paid the full $25 for the book (plus tax and shipping) -- but still, it's a great book. Sort of fun exploring the German and French text as well. And yes, I wish I could have snagged a "Book of Tiki" as well. I did manage to get the book "Smuggler's Cove", however. Also a great book (and the recipes for the many different drinks are well worth the price!).
I consider Smuggler's Cove the best first tiki book anyone can get! It covers the history of tiki culture, the revival, gives a good overview of rum types PLUS includes a bunch of recipes to enjoy. There are a lot of good tiki books available these days, but that one covers all the bases. I even dedicated my third Moment of Tiki episode to it: th-cam.com/video/4qQjS_GIx7E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=eAajH6s8TI3pO1b0 And don't feel bad. I paid the full $25 for Tiki Pop as well. I still think it's a crazy good deal!
Alas, that's not his call. Unless his publisher, Taschen, decides to reprint it (or they relinquish their rights to the book and Sven could find another publisher willing to take on the project) it is doomed to remain out of print. Once an author delivers the contracted manuscript there's not much control they retain. Illustration-heavy books like this, particularly those with full color, are crazy expensive to produce. That's why there aren't many publishers that will take them on and why the resulting books come with high price tags.
Myself and my wife are recovering journalists who come from teacher families, so I can sympathize! On the bright side, I have both and the smaller one is a much, much better value!

You and me both! It is a deep and twisty rabbit hole we have fallen down!
Thanks for this great tip! My parents loved Tiki and my childhood was very island-style and I'm grabbing it! Mahalo xoxo Tala Waterdragon
Happy to help, Tala!
I've gifted this book to a few friends. I'm still in need of the larger one with the poster inside.

Just ordered one for me and one as a gift. Wish I could find the other books for a cheaper price. Thanks for the recommendation!
We all wish the others were available cheaper! Maybe someday Taschen will reprint them.
I really wish Kirsten would do another run of the Book of Tiki.

I've got that one. Bought it some time ago because I'm a teacher and can't afford big books. 😅

It’s actually less than $20, right now it’s $16.95 on Amazon
That's just nuts!
