Lagoon of Mystery
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 27 ม.ค. 2020
A Moment of Tiki is a monthly web series originating from my home tiki bar, the Lagoon of Mystery, in Central Texas. Through the miracle of moving pictures and sound, I share my various construction and decoration project as I DIY my way to a tropical paradise. Think of it as me making all the mistakes so you don't have to. Along the way I'll mix up a rum cocktail or two, show off my questionable home bartending skills and volunteer my thoughts on books, music and even landscaping. Eclectic? Absolutely! But eventually it all ties together nicely in the Lagoon of Mystery.
Carving Trader Mort's tiki (and a giveaway!) - A Moment of Tiki episode 74

Trader Mort's Liquor, located in San Diego, boasts a distinctive tiki mascot carved by the late, great Eli Hedley. In my never-ending quest to increase the tiki population in the Lagoon of Mystery, I've decided to try my hand at recreating this unique character. It's an instantly-recognizable tiki design that offers technical challenges I've never attempted before--which is what I'm looking for in order to improve my carving skills. So come along and watch as I power carve my way through this latest project.
But wait! That's not all--it's Mele Kalikimaka season, friends! As I've done in the past, I am gifting one of you with a hand-crafted holiday ornament! In addition to the large Trader Mort's-style tiki, this episode I also demonstrate how I power carve wooden Trader Mort's-style tiki ornaments for the season. I've made three to give away, which means three chances for you to win one. I'll be giving away one here on TH-cam, another on Instagram and a third on Facebook. Links to IG and FB contests may be found below the official "HOW TO ENTER" rules following.
HOW TO ENTER (aka "Official Rules"):
1. Subscribe to A Moment Of Tiki if you haven't already.
2. Leave a comment below. You may tell me your favorite way tiki intersects with your holiday of choice, be it Christmas, Hanukkah, Yule, Saturnalia or Festivus but that's not necessary (although it is fun!).
3. SEND ME A CONTACT EMAIL TO JBLASCHKE@HOTMAIL.COM. Be sure to include the name you are commenting under. In previous years I've chosen winners here that left me no way to contact them or get them their ornament. How sad is that?
4. Giveaway will close 11:59 a.m. CST Monday, December 23, 2024. I will select a winner at random and make the announcement here within 24 hours. If the winner does not respond to my winning notification within 72 hours, a runner-up from the original entries will be selected. Shipping information will ONLY be used to deliver the prize, and will not be sold or shared for any other purposes.
5. The winner will receive one (1) hand-carved TRADER MORT'S-STYLE TIKI ornament, approximately 3" in length. These are one-of-a-kind creations and as such have variations and imperfections.
6. U.S. residents only. Void where prohibited by law.
7. TH-cam is not a sponsor of this giveaway nor does TH-cam endorse this giveaway. By entering, participants release TH-cam from any and all liability related to my contest.
8. Entries which don't comply with the rules as outlined above will be disqualified. TH-cam Community Guidelines may be found at th-cam.com/users/howyoutubeworkspolicies/community-guidelines/
9. These ornaments are not affiliated with Trader Mort's Liquor in any way.

Artist Tony Canepa interviewed! - A Moment of Tiki Episode 73
มุมมอง 505หลายเดือนก่อน
For episode 73 of A MOMENT OF TIKI I welcome multi-talented artist Tony Canepa to the Lagoon of Mystery! Tony is an increasingly in-demand tiki artist who has done amazing work for the likes of Hidden Harbor in Pittsburgh, Inside Passage in Seattle and, of course, Tiki Tatsu-Ya in Austin. He's designed all manner of glassware, tiki mugs, menus, swizzle sticks, stickers, matchbooks, menus... you...
Pineapple Parlor - A Moment of Tiki Episode 72

There is nothing quite like the thrill of discovering a new tiki bar. And when I say discover, I mean that literally in the case of Pineapple Parlor in Galveston, Texas the tropical hideaway brings the speakeasy concept to tiki bars, a secret retreat in the back of Daiquiri Time Out's outdoor courtyard. One must know the secret code to get in, but once you do, wow! Galveston has a long history ...
Black Velvet, if you please - A Moment of Tiki episode 71
มุมมอง 1.1K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Black velvet art is one of the staple items of decor found in home and commercial tiki bars alike. In this episode of A MOMENT OF TIKI I look at two of the most influential artists who excelled at this form and captured striking, dramatic images from the South Pacific on black velvet: Edgar Leeteg and Ralph Burke Tyree. Leeteg essentially created the genre, relocating to Tahiti in the 1930s as ...

After a record freeze killed the 30-foot (9 meter) Mexican fan palm in our front yard several years ago, I was faced with the unpleasant prospect of chopping it down and digging it out so we could plant something else in its place. It was then my wife suggested I carve it into a tiki where it stood. Really? The thought had not occurred to me, believe it or not. All of my carves had been small u...

It's time for another Moment of Tiki road trip episode! You'll have to forgive the audio on this one because the goings-on at this location were extremely loud! Central Texas is not known for a large Pacific Islander population, but San Antonio-area residents of Pasifika ancestry have a flourishing local scene and a growing annual event celebrating their shared culture. Mele Kalikimaka and happy Winter Solstice! May the days to come get brighter and brighter ((*)). I love your channel and I feel like your carvings are just getting better and better. Nice work. Looking forward to much more to come :)
Thank you, James! I need to commit to more carvings in the coming year because improvement only comes with practice!
I love handmade Tiki. What you created looks great. I have a soft spot for Tiki Bob. I'm tempted to create my own.
Do it! Just don't skimp on safety!
Another nice carve, Jayme, and thanks for offering another giveaway. Crossing my fingers that I win this year.
Thanks for the kind words, Hamo! Good luck!
I have always admired your port hole behind your bar , could you do a how to on it, or reference your video if already done. Thanks again.
Thank you, Joseph. Alas, that particular project predates A Moment of Tiki by several years. However, I was doing a build-along blog at the time. You can read about it at this link. If you attempt it yourself, the biggest advice I can offer is DON'T use oak plywood. Instead, choose something with even, innocuous grain, like poplar or birch: jlbgibberish.blogspot.com/2017/11/tiki-build-along-pt-14.html
Jayme, that tiki that you carved looks awesome, I can’t believe that this is only your 3rd attempt at carving!! It’s really cool!! What tool do you use for carving?
Thanks for the kind words, Justin, but that's not entirely accurate. This is my fifth large tiki attempt--the pecan Moai several years ago was my first (disappointing) attempt, then I did the Tiki Bob stand alone and Tiki Bob table (which I count together), the Hawaiian Eye tiki and 11-foot dead palm carve. Other than those, I've used a dremel to carve some small tiki ornaments every year since 2018, plus router and Dremel work on molding, baseboards and chair rails. That's not all tiki carving, true, but it builds familiarity with the tools and carving process that helps with the learning curve. As the saying goes, it takes many years of effort to become an overnight success!
@ my bad, I didn’t mean to leave the other carvings out! You made this one look very easy!! Did I do everything I was supposed to do for the giveaway on TH-cam? I’ll send you a picture of this plastic tiki that I picked up from marketplace last week. I’m gonna touch it up with acrylic multi surface paint bc most of it was chipped off
@@justinmartin1493 I think you're good. Acrylic paint's a good choice for repair jobs like that. It's cheap, very easy to work with and comes in an insane variety of colors and finishes.
Love the ornaments, and would love to have one! Took my wife to Bali Hai on a date night last year when visiting San Diego and loved it! Wish I still drank (no, not really. Ha ha!) because I would've stopped at Trader Mort's.
That's great! People tend to fixate on the cocktails because they're so elaborate, but tiki is primarily escapism, with can be accomplished without the booze. Trader Mort's does have a neat souvenir mug, so it might be worth a stop your next visit to San Diego, regardless!
@@LagoonofMystery good to know. Thanks!
Always love your DIY videos, this one is no exception. I would love to get my hands on some palm logs but not possible in my area. Is cedar the next best wood to carve/router? What would you suggest?
The best wood to carve is the wood you can get! The Polynesian people didn't carve palm logs because that was "the best" to carve, it was the only wood available. My palm log access is relatively limited--these California fan palm logs I acquired a couple of years ago and am almost out. Mexican fan palms are far more common here in Central Texas but they're full of water, fibrous and like trying to carve rope. Some parts are so structurally unsound as to be impossible to carve. My first carving, a Moai, I shared here a few years ago was out of pecan. That's one of the hardest woods available and I wouldn't recommend for beginners. I have some live oak pieces (also super hard) and hackberry (not hard at all) and plan to get some larger cedar/mountain juniper logs to carve in the future. Those are crazy common around me so I'll ultimately carve more of those than palm. I confess that the cedar smells fantastic when I carve it and for a softwood it holds details well. But again, whatever you can get access to is the best wood to carve. 😁
Trader Mort is so iconic. We visit the liquor store every year when attending tiki oasis in San Diego. Great job bringing him to life to enjoy at the Lagoon of mystery. Would love to win Trader Mort to put next to the other ornament I received from you. Merry Christmas
Trader Mort's is sooo distinctive. That's a big reason why I chose it--so I could judge if I crafted an accurate likeness!
Nice job! Thanks for sharing
You are welcome!
I love all of your how to videos. I am on a serious budget and have to do everything myself (such as curing bamboo etc). I can't wait to try to carve my own tiki like you did in this video!
Preach it! Budget limitations are the mother of necessity. It's amazing how much one can do with a handful of Dremel bits and a cheap rotary tool from Harbor Freight! That's not to say one can't do a whole lot more with a more impressive setup, but you can learn a whole lot with a bare bones setup. 😁
This is my favorite one!!!!!
Thank you!
Another great carving video! One of these days I might get brave and try one. Those little tiki Christmas ornaments are amazing. 👍
Thank you for the kind words!
Amazing as always, I look forward to seeing what you do every year. This one is especially cool because it's from my home town (my parents used to work off Shelter Island). Great job Jayme!
Aw, yer makin' me blush!
@@LagoonofMysteryDude your carvings are some of my most prized ornaments, they make me smile so much. Blush away!!
It's a christmas tradition to see what ornament you create every year. Sadly in Canada. Merry Christmas to you and your family
Thanks for the kind words! Maybe someday...
Ooooh I love the trader morts dude. We snagged the mug last time we were there. Would love an ornament for the tree! We love putting tiki ornaments in the tree. We have a few from Trader Vic’s.
I have that same mug! I should've included it in the video!
Another great informative video. Thank you
Glad you liked it!
I need to get me some new carving tools!
Everyone needs new carving tools! 😉
In my home theater, i made some cloth covered sound absorption panels years ago that are 6' tall, hung about a foot off the floor and a foot from the ceiling.. they're hung up solidly on french cleats, and i realized hey the top is basically a little shelf, so I started keeping my tiki mug collection up there.. it grew and grew and got too big for the panels, so i thought hey i'll add some little bridge shelves in between, and i was inspired by your tiki trim video to do a bit of carving and wood burning to give them a tiki vibe, hung some raffia underneath, and they turned out awesome. Now I have plenty of room for more, and a little Trader Mort's Tiki would feel right at home on them not just on Christmas, but year round!
Very cool! That sounds like many simple projects that grew and took on a life of their own!
Very methodically project. Thank you for your details! 😊
You’ve inspired me, to make my own Tiki. Thank you!
Let me know how it turns out! Just don't skimp on the safety!
An awesome carving . I’d love a Trader Mort mini tiki to come to the UK
That looks fantastic, Jayme! Congrats on another great project! Mahalo!
Much appreciated!
love the videos...Now I always drill a pilot hole. thanks you can tell how hard you work on these, and you really seem to have a fun time.
Yay for pilot holes! 🥰🥰🥰
Both the bust and ornaments turned out awesome! Wish I had the talent to do these! 🙂 We always hit the local tiki spots doing the Christmas themed drinks!
If it's any consolation, my earliest efforts weren't great and even now the flaws stand out for me!
@LagoonofMystery Yeah, but even the little flaws make them unique and special!
I’d love a Trader Mort ornament for my tree! I love incorporating Mele Kalikimaka designs into my decor. Thanks to your post on FB I found your channel and subscribed. Mahalo!
Good luck, Lori!
Dude those are cool my dad loves tikis lol
Thank you!
Love it!
Thank you!
Is that Martin Denny?
No, it is "The Secret of Tiki Island" by Kevin Macleod. It's certainly inspired by Martin Denny and Les Baxter, tho.
Mahalo for this, Jayme! I'm a huge fan of Mr. Canepa's work, and to see an interview with him was fantatsic, especially with such insightful questions! Cheers.
You are very much welcome! The whole interview was a blast, except for the unseasonably hot weather!
Great story! Thank you for sharing!
You are most welcome!
I love how your bar turned out! Somewhere down the road I’d like to redo a bar for a future property. You gave me some good ideas here. Doubt I’ll find anything as cool as that “bosco” that’s mounted on yours but who knows what I’ll find! lol I guess time is on my side for that project! I’m not exactly sure what a bosco is. Or maybe I’m spelling it totally wrong!
Bosko is one of the original artists who were a part of the beginning of the tiki revival 20-plus years ago. He does carvings and has had his designs carried nationwide by Home Depot and other retailers: www.tikibosko.com/
@@LagoonofMystery thank you! I’ll have to read up!
I'm an artist and I have considered moving into creating tiki materials. This is super helpful. .
We aim to please!
Tony is AWESOME! He did the art for my home bar glassware back in 2017 and I am still absolutely thrilled with the design. He is so easy to work with and took each of my crazy ideas and put them together into a cohesive, and beautiful, design.
He is a singular talent!
Does this guy play music or just talk over it?
Thanks for the tutorial! Just finished my first one!
Groovy! Now that the fear of the unknown is out of the way, I expect you'll be knocking them out by the dozen! 😉
@@LagoonofMystery If I can find a good source for floats. Most of what I find are originals that I don't want to drill. I'll probably use a bigger hole in the future, frosting it is gonna be a bit tricky.
@@oregonreverb Yeah, I've not bothered with frosting. Oceanic Arts had a sandblaster set up for these but that's beyond my means. Frosted glass gives a nice diffusion to the color, but without works also.
@@LagoonofMystery I'm going to give the frosting spray paint a try tonight. It came out alright on my test bottle.
@@oregonreverb I've used that "frosted glass" spray paint on some cheap, clear glass floats I've picked up at craft stores. It takes several coats but works well--especially with color-changing bulbs.
What about Alaska? 😂 (In a greenhouse I mean obviously)
That better be one heck of a greenhouse! 😅
I found some piece of used home decor at the thrift store and I don't even know what it was. It's a tall rectangular wood box covered in bamboo or something and it looks kind of tiki. I assume it was something for displaying plants or maybe it was the bottom of a lamp. I have no idea. I just bought it cause I figured it could be put to use in my (future) tiki bar.
It could be a base for artificial pants. I've seen similar. Could be other things as well. Doesn't matter. Repurposing for tiki aesthetic is a time-honored tradition!
@@LagoonofMystery The sticker was partially missing I know it was from HD Designs. I looked up the SKU number and it came back with nothing.
Mahalo, Jayme! That place looks great! It was a lot of fun seeing it, and I love the idea of serving little bites with the drinks - what a cool idea!! Cheers and thanks for another great video.
My pleasure, Adam! This really is a great space and I want everyone to pay them a visit!
There is a second book on Tyree featuring animals, birds, land-scapes, fish and nature.... My Father did over 5,000 paintings !!!!! And, had a heart attack at only 57 and died!!! SO!!! 5,000 paintings in only 37 years is simply AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! (2nd book also by C.J. Cook)
There was a New Hotel that opened in Honolulu and they placed one of his paintings in the Lobby window with a machine behind it moving her chest and EVERYBODY thought it was a live woman!!!!! THAT'S HOW "REAL" HIS WORK WAS!!!!!!!!!!
Its NOT true that My Father's work was NOT selling !! Once we got to Hawaii , My Father was only painting to make a living!! No outside source of money!! His problem was he was too nice, a True Gentleman and would sell paintings TOO CHEAP!!! He changed to velvet because of the effect he could achieve on velvet! MORE REALIZIM!!!
I can believe that. Artists are often the worst people at valuing their own work.
THANK-YOU for Your compliments they are all true!!! He painted from 9:00 to 12:00 every day !!! 7 days a week!!! He perfected his craft!!!!!!!! I'm his oldest son!!! Gregory....
Great to hear from you, Gregory! Your father left an amazing legacy and we can all marvel at his talent and skill!
While writing to Margo he drew pictures and sent them to Margo showing 7 children!!! He had 7 CHILDREN!!! I know because I am the oldest one!! 6 boys , one sweet, daughter!!!
Thanks for showing . I plan on making a visit
Let me know what you think after!
Thanks for this video. I can't wait to visit this place 😍 Tiki Time cocktails.
They have excellent, elevated cocktails for sure! Those Rotovaps aren't for pretenders!
Im so happy I found this channel!
