Lagoon of Mystery
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 27 ม.ค. 2020
A Moment of Tiki is a monthly web series originating from my home tiki bar, the Lagoon of Mystery, in Central Texas. Through the miracle of moving pictures and sound, I share my various construction and decoration project as I DIY my way to a tropical paradise. Think of it as me making all the mistakes so you don't have to. Along the way I'll mix up a rum cocktail or two, show off my questionable home bartending skills and volunteer my thoughts on books, music and even landscaping. Eclectic? Absolutely! But eventually it all ties together nicely in the Lagoon of Mystery.
Tiki Pop: This Book Is A Steal! - A Moment of Tiki episode 75
Coming to you from my home tiki bar, the Lagoon of Mystery! If you already have Sven Kirsten's "Tiki Pop" in your library, you know what an amazing bargain this book is. If you don't, read on to learn why you should correct this oversight posthaste!
Kirsten's "The Book of Tiki," published in 2000 by Taschen, arguably served as the catalyst to jump start the new tiki renaissance we are enjoying to this day. Alas, "The Book of Tiki," out of print for well more than a decade, commands prices of $200 or more on the used market these days. What's a newcomer to the tiki subculture to do, other than mortgage a kidney? Well, what if I told you that Sven had another book published by Taschen that is every bit as lush and impressive, and at 600-plus pages, more than twice the length of "The Book of Tiki"? And what if I told you that book was available to order now for $16? (I know I said the list price is $25 in the video, but I just checked and that giant South American river has it listed for $16 now!). This book is real and its name is "Tiki Pop." The original, large-format version of "Tiki Pop" came out in 2014 for the princely sum of $60, but once that fell out of print Taschen published this compact version in 2020, which, in my humble opinion, is by far the greatest bargain in tiki books that has ever existed. This book contains more than 600 pages of lush photography--many in full color--along with in-depth research of the tiki phenomenon throughout history. It is an outright steal at $25 and the current online price of $16 is absolutely insane. Not tikiphile's library should be without it. There's no excuse not to get it now, because once it goes out of print as it invariably will, you'll be kicking yourself for not grabbing it while you had the chance. To make it easy for you, I've included a direct link below.

I have no affiliation with Kirsten, Taschen or any booksellers. Nobody is paying me to say this. I just think this is a unfairly overlooked title that more tiki folks should know about and have in their libraries.

Good commentary. I’ve seen many theme establishments (tiki, western, ‘50s diner, etc.) rely too much on decor in the beginning to draw customers & careless in their choice of music. Initially, Top 40 stuff may work, but in the long run, the bar will lose its appeal when the novelty wears off & an identity was not developed. Tiki bars known to be authentic will have better chances at long term staying power.
Agreed! I've never seen anyone walk into a tiki bar, say, "Ugh! They're playing Martin Denny!" and then leave. I *have* seen people depart tiki bars specifically because they're playing Justin Bieber.
Mahalo Jayme! That's a great book for sure. I've been looking for a first-edition "yellow logo" one at a decent price for years, but it's definitely cool there is a more affordable version. Also, the line "you can crush small animals with it" was unexpected and completely hilarious. I spit my mai tai all over my laptop hahaha.
I calls 'em as I sees 'em! 😅
Thank you for making this!
You are welcome!
Fantastic video and an impressive end product too! I’m looking to make a resin “glass” lens for the bottom on a tiki lamp project myself, so this is exactly the how to I was looking for. Very informative. Thank you, and keep up the great videos!
Howdy Scott! I'm glad that I was able to provide what you were looking for! Good luck with your lamp project!
How can I order custom swizzle sticks from you? I need to have some done for my backyard tiki bar. Thank you so much!❤
Maryann, you can reach out to Tony through his website at www.tonycanepa.com/ to hire him to design you some swizzles. He doesn't manufacture them himself though--for that you'd need to go through Royer Corporation. Be warned that they have a minimum order of 10,000 (yes, you read that right).
Just ordered one for me and one as a gift. Wish I could find the other books for a cheaper price. Thanks for the recommendation!
We all wish the others were available cheaper! Maybe someday Taschen will reprint them.
The amount of dead palms i see here in FL that i want to do this to😊 very cool.
True! And I'll wager most of those are Sabal or California fan palms, which are much better to carve than Mexican fan palms!
Cool - I'll have to get that book! Also, a thought from a fellow TH-cam creator - you absolutely need to get the words 'tiki bar' into your channel name and every video title. Searchability! Cheers! Steve - The Reno You Know
This is fun to watch. I grew up Tiki as my Iberian grandfather was born on Kauai and came to the United States before Hawaii was a state, literally on a banana boat. I have all of the books you mentioned. They are on display throughout my house. Oh and Trader Vic’s in Emeryville is only about a 20 minute drive from my home.
I am envious of your proximity to Trader Vic's! My wife and I took a trip to the Bay Area in 2021 specifically to visit Trader Vic's when it was in danger of losing its lease. Of course, we made time to visit a number of other tiki destinations around the bay!
I've got that one. Bought it some time ago because I'm a teacher and can't afford big books. 😅
Myself and my wife are recovering journalists who come from teacher families, so I can sympathize! On the bright side, I have both and the smaller one is a much, much better value!
Unfortunately, this Tiki Pop 2nd ed. is the only Sven book I have because of the affordability. It is a great book, and a must have for any Tiki collection. The Book of Tiki and Tiki Modern are also a must haves, as well as Smuggler's Cove and Beachbum Berry's books. Thanks for your take (scratching the surface) on the vast historical roots of Tiki. These books are essential to any tiki bar, as they provide so much food for thought for decorating, mixology, and the deeper appreciation of the style for all tikiphiles. Mahalo and Happy New Year!
On the bright side, Tiki Pop may well be the best of Sven's output (I've yet to get Art of Tiki and Palm Springs Tiki, but they're on the list). Tiki Pop has way more content than Book of Tiki.
Thanks for this great tip! My parents loved Tiki and my childhood was very island-style and I'm grabbing it! Mahalo xoxo Tala Waterdragon
Happy to help, Tala!
Great episode! My library has grown in ways I never expected when I first got into tiki 24 years ago. I have books on Oceanic Arts (not the Bob and Leroy), the culture of the Maori, PNG, and Hawaii, the architecture of Polynesia, and a slew of cocktail recipe books. What I thought was a cool niche hobby is a much deeper, wider ocean than I ever imagined.
You and me both! It is a deep and twisty rabbit hole we have fallen down!
Darn .... I paid the full $25 for the book (plus tax and shipping) -- but still, it's a great book. Sort of fun exploring the German and French text as well. And yes, I wish I could have snagged a "Book of Tiki" as well. I did manage to get the book "Smuggler's Cove", however. Also a great book (and the recipes for the many different drinks are well worth the price!).
I consider Smuggler's Cove the best first tiki book anyone can get! It covers the history of tiki culture, the revival, gives a good overview of rum types PLUS includes a bunch of recipes to enjoy. There are a lot of good tiki books available these days, but that one covers all the bases. I even dedicated my third Moment of Tiki episode to it: th-cam.com/video/4qQjS_GIx7E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=eAajH6s8TI3pO1b0 And don't feel bad. I paid the full $25 for Tiki Pop as well. I still think it's a crazy good deal!
It’s actually less than $20, right now it’s $16.95 on Amazon
That's just nuts!
That is for the small, condensed version. It’s the copy I have as well. You can tell because the title is in red, not yellow, like the full sized version. Still a great book though and a steal
@@ziptiepepe Right. That's what the video is about.
@@LagoonofMystery lol i commented before realizing you were going to take out the small version
I've gifted this book to a few friends. I'm still in need of the larger one with the poster inside.
I really wish Kirsten would do another run of the Book of Tiki.
Alas, that's not his call. Unless his publisher, Taschen, decides to reprint it (or they relinquish their rights to the book and Sven could find another publisher willing to take on the project) it is doomed to remain out of print. Once an author delivers the contracted manuscript there's not much control they retain. Illustration-heavy books like this, particularly those with full color, are crazy expensive to produce. That's why there aren't many publishers that will take them on and why the resulting books come with high price tags.
Love it! Great work. Your channel is excellent.
Many thanks!
Respect from Russia
I’m on my way there now (Dec 28 2024). I hear they are closing the shop soon. :( Supposed to be 20 percent off items currently. This is very sad.
Yes, they are wrapping things up in May, I believe. First we lose Oceanic Arts, now we lose Nautical Antique Warehouse. 😪
@ It’s sad. I got two more big rope covered glass floats, those are now about $32 each. Got some pulleys and deadeyes for rigging, netting, and distressed floats for decor.
@@wildcatdiva4974 Yes, I'm hoping to make a trip there within the next couple of months myself to say goodbye (and make some good buys!).
@@LagoonofMystery Yes. I hope you find what done good buys. We hoped to find a ship’s wheel but didn’t find any. I had also wanted a port and starboard light but didn’t find anything I could afford. I found some oil lamps as an option on eBay that might work for that idea.
Mele Kalikimaka and happy Winter Solstice! May the days to come get brighter and brighter ((*)). I love your channel and I feel like your carvings are just getting better and better. Nice work. Looking forward to much more to come :)
Thank you, James! I need to commit to more carvings in the coming year because improvement only comes with practice!
I love handmade Tiki. What you created looks great. I have a soft spot for Tiki Bob. I'm tempted to create my own.
Do it! Just don't skimp on safety!
Another nice carve, Jayme, and thanks for offering another giveaway. Crossing my fingers that I win this year.
Thanks for the kind words, Hamo! Good luck!
I have always admired your port hole behind your bar , could you do a how to on it, or reference your video if already done. Thanks again.
Thank you, Joseph. Alas, that particular project predates A Moment of Tiki by several years. However, I was doing a build-along blog at the time. You can read about it at this link. If you attempt it yourself, the biggest advice I can offer is DON'T use oak plywood. Instead, choose something with even, innocuous grain, like poplar or birch: jlbgibberish.blogspot.com/2017/11/tiki-build-along-pt-14.html
Jayme, that tiki that you carved looks awesome, I can’t believe that this is only your 3rd attempt at carving!! It’s really cool!! What tool do you use for carving?
Thanks for the kind words, Justin, but that's not entirely accurate. This is my fifth large tiki attempt--the pecan Moai several years ago was my first (disappointing) attempt, then I did the Tiki Bob stand alone and Tiki Bob table (which I count together), the Hawaiian Eye tiki and 11-foot dead palm carve. Other than those, I've used a dremel to carve some small tiki ornaments every year since 2018, plus router and Dremel work on molding, baseboards and chair rails. That's not all tiki carving, true, but it builds familiarity with the tools and carving process that helps with the learning curve. As the saying goes, it takes many years of effort to become an overnight success!
@ my bad, I didn’t mean to leave the other carvings out! You made this one look very easy!! Did I do everything I was supposed to do for the giveaway on TH-cam? I’ll send you a picture of this plastic tiki that I picked up from marketplace last week. I’m gonna touch it up with acrylic multi surface paint bc most of it was chipped off
@@justinmartin1493 I think you're good. Acrylic paint's a good choice for repair jobs like that. It's cheap, very easy to work with and comes in an insane variety of colors and finishes.
Love the ornaments, and would love to have one! Took my wife to Bali Hai on a date night last year when visiting San Diego and loved it! Wish I still drank (no, not really. Ha ha!) because I would've stopped at Trader Mort's.
That's great! People tend to fixate on the cocktails because they're so elaborate, but tiki is primarily escapism, with can be accomplished without the booze. Trader Mort's does have a neat souvenir mug, so it might be worth a stop your next visit to San Diego, regardless!
@@LagoonofMystery good to know. Thanks!
Always love your DIY videos, this one is no exception. I would love to get my hands on some palm logs but not possible in my area. Is cedar the next best wood to carve/router? What would you suggest?
The best wood to carve is the wood you can get! The Polynesian people didn't carve palm logs because that was "the best" to carve, it was the only wood available. My palm log access is relatively limited--these California fan palm logs I acquired a couple of years ago and am almost out. Mexican fan palms are far more common here in Central Texas but they're full of water, fibrous and like trying to carve rope. Some parts are so structurally unsound as to be impossible to carve. My first carving, a Moai, I shared here a few years ago was out of pecan. That's one of the hardest woods available and I wouldn't recommend for beginners. I have some live oak pieces (also super hard) and hackberry (not hard at all) and plan to get some larger cedar/mountain juniper logs to carve in the future. Those are crazy common around me so I'll ultimately carve more of those than palm. I confess that the cedar smells fantastic when I carve it and for a softwood it holds details well. But again, whatever you can get access to is the best wood to carve. 😁
Trader Mort is so iconic. We visit the liquor store every year when attending tiki oasis in San Diego. Great job bringing him to life to enjoy at the Lagoon of mystery. Would love to win Trader Mort to put next to the other ornament I received from you. Merry Christmas
Trader Mort's is sooo distinctive. That's a big reason why I chose it--so I could judge if I crafted an accurate likeness!
Nice job! Thanks for sharing
You are welcome!
I love all of your how to videos. I am on a serious budget and have to do everything myself (such as curing bamboo etc). I can't wait to try to carve my own tiki like you did in this video!
Preach it! Budget limitations are the mother of necessity. It's amazing how much one can do with a handful of Dremel bits and a cheap rotary tool from Harbor Freight! That's not to say one can't do a whole lot more with a more impressive setup, but you can learn a whole lot with a bare bones setup. 😁
This is my favorite one!!!!!
Thank you!
Another great carving video! One of these days I might get brave and try one. Those little tiki Christmas ornaments are amazing. 👍
Thank you for the kind words!
Amazing as always, I look forward to seeing what you do every year. This one is especially cool because it's from my home town (my parents used to work off Shelter Island). Great job Jayme!
Aw, yer makin' me blush!

It's a christmas tradition to see what ornament you create every year. Sadly in Canada. Merry Christmas to you and your family
Thanks for the kind words! Maybe someday...
Ooooh I love the trader morts dude. We snagged the mug last time we were there. Would love an ornament for the tree! We love putting tiki ornaments in the tree. We have a few from Trader Vic’s.
I have that same mug! I should've included it in the video!
Another great informative video. Thank you
Glad you liked it!
I need to get me some new carving tools!
Everyone needs new carving tools! 😉
In my home theater, i made some cloth covered sound absorption panels years ago that are 6' tall, hung about a foot off the floor and a foot from the ceiling.. they're hung up solidly on french cleats, and i realized hey the top is basically a little shelf, so I started keeping my tiki mug collection up there.. it grew and grew and got too big for the panels, so i thought hey i'll add some little bridge shelves in between, and i was inspired by your tiki trim video to do a bit of carving and wood burning to give them a tiki vibe, hung some raffia underneath, and they turned out awesome. Now I have plenty of room for more, and a little Trader Mort's Tiki would feel right at home on them not just on Christmas, but year round!
Very cool! That sounds like many simple projects that grew and took on a life of their own!
Very methodically project. Thank you for your details! 😊
You’ve inspired me, to make my own Tiki. Thank you!
Let me know how it turns out! Just don't skimp on the safety!
An awesome carving . I’d love a Trader Mort mini tiki to come to the UK
That looks fantastic, Jayme! Congrats on another great project! Mahalo!
Much appreciated!
love the videos...Now I always drill a pilot hole. thanks you can tell how hard you work on these, and you really seem to have a fun time.
Yay for pilot holes! 🥰🥰🥰
Both the bust and ornaments turned out awesome! Wish I had the talent to do these! 🙂 We always hit the local tiki spots doing the Christmas themed drinks!
If it's any consolation, my earliest efforts weren't great and even now the flaws stand out for me!
@LagoonofMystery Yeah, but even the little flaws make them unique and special!
I’d love a Trader Mort ornament for my tree! I love incorporating Mele Kalikimaka designs into my decor. Thanks to your post on FB I found your channel and subscribed. Mahalo!
Good luck, Lori!

Is that Martin Denny?
No, it is "The Secret of Tiki Island" by Kevin Macleod. It's certainly inspired by Martin Denny and Les Baxter, tho.
Mahalo for this, Jayme! I'm a huge fan of Mr. Canepa's work, and to see an interview with him was fantatsic, especially with such insightful questions! Cheers.
You are very much welcome! The whole interview was a blast, except for the unseasonably hot weather!
