The way you suggest structure is really helpful. I have a chronic illness so it's not possible to schedule anything concretely, my energy levels and pain levels are on their own schedule.
But this "2 Wednesdays per month" kind of approach actually could work, thanks!

That viscous cycle can be a good thing too as an artist. I have realized during periods where I am not creating I am gathering and recording. Making lists, researching and taking notes or just learning in a different way but still growing. It comes down to willingness and motivation. Therefore the cycle can be very reliable too!

    • @alphonsodunn

You are so right about writing down your ideas. I do that a lot. I like to draw clothes and other random things. I usually get an idea right before I go to bed and I quickly grab my sketch book and just write down for example: white hat, white shirt, blue pants and the next time I want to draw I read that and remember what I wanted to do. And thank you for your advice; you are awesome.

This is the, PEP TALK, video that, repeated every month or so, keeps you on the drawing, creative path. Without these, Headsups!, the very real drawing despondency can creep in. I didn't draw a thing over the holidays and that was vexing because there was so much free time to draw. Replacing the batteries in the electric eraser, small thing but a segway into picking up the pen. Love this video.

I'm going to leave one of those cliche comments about how you posted this at the perfect time, because it's true. I was in a deep rut, and had no motivation to create. And your example of inertia really put it into perspective and was the only motivation I needed. I drew a skull today and a couple simple crappy doodles. But I feel good about all of them, knowing I can get back into the swing of things! Much respect for this video, it's very helpful

The very thing you were talking about I have done and that is that I stopped due to being very critical and hard with my end product. What I love about this particular video is that you touch up on the psychological feeling of guilt when inertia sets in. I have those feelings all the time. Mental struggles with myself that I don't have what it takes. Although I had these feelings of insecurity and doubt, there was always one thing that remained despite the negativity I was feeding on, and this was that I love to use different media to create art. I am not a professional I am just a person who has the desire to turn something creative (masterpiece, just kidding). I have in my head images I would like to draw, but many times it doesn't come out the way I want it to be and that's when I get disappointed. Listening to you tells me that I must continue despite my disappointments because the truth is I can't stop thinking about drawing and painting. Thank you for your insight it means a lot to me. Thank you.

This is on-point. I make it a point to have my 'art bag' with me at all times. It's not fancy, it's a ripped-up NPR bag. It's got a sketchpad and a little pencil case with pens, pencils, an eraser, and a sharp knife. Every day, without fail, I take my bag with me at lunch. I usually eat and listen to music or a podcast to get my head out of the workspace, and then I draw for about 40 minutes. I used to get self-conscious when people stopped to look. Now I don't care. Too busy having fun.
For a long time, I was just drawing figures and buildings, getting used to observing and drawing. Recently, I got bored and started mixing it up. I started putting different supplies in my pencil bag every week, and I set a theme for myself for the week: will I draw this week at lunch? Last week it was "hands in action", the week before that it was "imaginary animals", the week before that it was "What do I look like to a person passing by me?"
When I'm done, I take a picture of whatever it is I've drawn and I share it with my wife over text. It's really important to share the work, I think. If I don't share then it's just doodling.
I'm very lucky to work near the Art Institute of Chicago, which has a simple open sketch policy; you can sketch if you have a small pad (I use a 5.5" x 8.5"), use pencil only, and don't get in the way of the other visitors. Spending time amongst the artworks is great for inspiration; so many styles and things to learn. It has helped me see and my composition has improved a lot. If you live near an art museum, find out if you can go in and draw. There may be restrictions on which parts of the museum allow drawing and allowed media.
Your suggestion of building in that sort of adjunct 'creative time' where you write or make lists or take pictures is a huge idea! Thank you for that.
Your work has been a huge help to me. I am looking forward to the workbook!

Thanks for your motivation . It seems we all pass by this period of inactivity and moodiness. I will try to do my best because you describe exactly how one feels bad or lacks confidence when not drawing because it is an unhealthy pattern when we skip drawing for a long and then redraw., it will take a while for me personally to have this coup de crayon every time I don't draw 😮‍💨

Great vid, as usual. Thanks for your commitment!
Among the ways for drawing every day, I would love to use a workbook, with about 365 subjects to do, one per day for a year in total.
I wonder what your next workbook will be about, but I'd love to see that kind of workbook for a year of practice, from you :D
Looking forward to watching your new video ;)
