I'm so proud of Drew for managing to turn her life around by attending rehab, after such a troubled childhood. She's now even more respected as an adult actress than as a child star.
I think that her life shows us the flip side of being born into fame.
@ScienceFraction Whenever I think about Drew, I inadvertently compare her to Natasha Richardson. It probably isn't fair. But, I keep on thinking that it is an indictment on American celebrity.

In the 1960s, I loved Xmas week. No school and in the afternoon, a different Shirley Temple movie came on TV every day.
Scarlet Johansson, Natalie Portman, KeKe Palmer, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Raven Simone, Elijah Wood. so many more should of been talked about even if not nominated.

I totally agree with other comments that Mickey Rooney is a massive omission from this list. He made his first short films in the 1920s and his last in 2014. He was the top box office draw in America in the late 30s and early 40s. Also, if we are talking about successful transition to an adult performer, Judy Garland and Liz Taylor should be vying for the number one spot over Shirley Temple. Although Temple was a huge child star her transition to adulthood in the entertainment field was not particularly successful. Taylor and Garland however both did their best work as adults and both are now remembered as legends in the entertainment industry. Notwithstanding that, a very interesting and well put together video.
Yeah Mickey Rooney was also in disneys phantom of the megaplex. As the movie mason. Fun character and it’s why I got into history of film and cinema. Long history…

I agree that Temple, while being the most popular (and money making) child star ever, should not be number one, as she didn't not transition into an adult acting career. I can't believe they ignored Mickey Rooney and Dean Stockwell, who had long and successful careers, both as child and adult actors.
@@kathleencummings8081 She's #1 because she was the #1 box office draw for mulltiple years AS A CHILD. During a time when Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, Mabel Normand, Mary Pickford, Lillian Gish, Greta Garbo, Buster Keaton, John Lionel & Ethel Barrymore (and many more) were all acting. None of the others can claim anything like that distinction.
Shirley was my first Hollywood child actress I was introduced to by my mom. I was devastated when she passed.

Nobody can dominate the actor of Kevin McCallister. All the Home Alone movies after Lost in New York can prove that
Liked Home Alone 3 but not Home Alone 4 it was not very good. Replacing Kevin and Buzz with younger actors was not the best move and getting rid of the rest of the family.
Mickey Rooney was in a clip, but not an honorable mention when he should have actually made the list. He started in silent films and never left the industry. Ron Howard started acting when he was about 4, was in two long running TV series and might have shifted to directing, but never left the industry. Yet neither made even the honorable mentions. Mickey just happened to be in a clip in Elizabeth Taylor's entry. Both of these men made adjustments to their careers and were just as, if not more, successful than earlier in their career. I don't understand and it is a great injustice to both of these wonderful performers.
There is a lack of knowledge and a bias toward the modern :)

I would also add Jackie Coogan. His law suit against is mom and step-dad started the Coogan Act in California to protect a child star earnings.
Major kudos to Saoirse for getting her first Oscar nomination at only 13 years old, and proving that she was a star on the rise! 🌟😍

Not only did his career start at age 3 and went through radio, vaudeville, TV and movies but after his parents stole his earnings he successfully sued them and was able to get changes to the industry called the California Child Actors bill also known as the "Coogan Act"
I said that too. He's probably the most important child star due to the Coogan law alone.

MsMojo, you forgot to mention Ron Howard. He is known as playing as Opie in the popular classic sitcom, The Andy Griffith Show when he was a child. Also, I did not know that as an adult, he would later go on to launch his own movie studio, Imagine Entertainment.
I think this should be a top 20. So many people are missing. Zen days, Elle Fanning, Anna Paquin, Tom Holland, Kristen Stuart, and many more.

Not sure I'd include Culkin on this list. He's basically only known for Home Alone. Shirley Temple was also easily the most dominant child star, but did nothing in Hollywood after. I'd put others like Ron Howard or Kurt Russell for sure. Even Haley mills.

Why does everyone forget that Ryan Gosling was fairly well-known before The Notebook? After MMC, he did Breaker High and Young Hercules. He was very recognizable as both characters from the respective show. Especially in his Hercules costume. The boy was easy to pick out of a crowd, if you will.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s breakout role was Luke Brower on Growing Pains. His role as Arnie in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape proved his Oscar-level potential while his turn as Romeo proved he made a good leading man in a romance. Titanic made him a box office darling and household name.
Where is Mickey Rooney? All time, right? It makes no sense to exclude him. He was acting nearly his entire life. Age 4 to 93. He did over 300 films, most of which he stared in. Has one of the longest film franchises in cinema history-Andy Hardy Series. He was the most famous child actor in Hollywood from 1939 to 1941 and was the highest paid actor of his generation of stars. You cannot have Judy Garland and Shirley Temple on this list and not include Mickey Rooney as well.
You forgot Anna Paquin! She won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for playing Holly Hunter's daughter in The Piano and she would go on to have success with the X-Men movie franchise and the TV series True Blood just to name a few.

I would add Dean Stockwell as at least an Honorable Mention. He started acting in 1945, became one of the most successful child actors of the MGM studio era, returned in his early 20s to a series of tv guest roles + a number of films, and then just kept right on working through the years in big projects and small, eventually earning an Oscar nomination, two Golden Globe awards, and a bunch of Emmy nominations. He quit acting in 2015 with 200+ roles to his credit.
He was amazing. He was also gorgeous as an adult. There is a film with him as a 17 year old and the French actress who played Cybelle in Sundays and Cybelle.
Soon as I saw that adorable thumbnail I knew who'd be #1 and rightly so.

Mukulay Culkin doesn't really act anymore, yet he was on the list. Hannah Montana has not been in any major movies since the Hannah Montan movie. She is, however, a successful singer.

I knew Shirley Temple would be number one. Even after nearly a century later, her films are still extremely popular and still considered timeless classics. I grew up watching her films and I can never resist her charms

I disagree. If the list was of the most successful child stars, she would be the obvious number one choice.
HOWEVER, the list is of the most prominent child stars who careers flourished into adulthood. She retired at the age of 22.
I think that she should have been number 3. She was the most dominant child star EVER. That alone puts her in the top five.
In my opinion, Elizabeth Taylor is hands down number one. Her bio lists her as being active for over 65 years. She is one of the few people on this list who didn't take a break during her exalted career.

Judy Garland's career started before the Wizard of Oz. Andy Hardy movies and Babes in Arms with Mickey Rooney were made before Oz.
You are correct that her career began before Oz but Babes in Arms was after Oz and only one Hardy film was before Oz.

Does anyone remember the little girl who played “Young Mako” in the movie Pacific Rim? The powerful scene where she’s running away from the monster, crying? Her name is Mana Ashida and she was about 8 in that movie. She has been a famous actress in Japan since she was 4, and she’s now 18 years old. She has been acting in amazing roles in TV shows and movies, and even voicing for popular animation like Ghibli! Please check out her other roles if you liked her in Pacific Rim, because she is truly a once-in-a-lifetime talent!

Jodie Foster has been in movies way before taxi driver. Napoleon and Samantha(with Johnny Whitaker and a very young Michael Douglas),Tom Sawyer(again with Johnny Whitaker),Nanny the Professor and many more.
Yep she did a lot of guest star in tv shows and the first movie was Menace on the mountain 1970 when she was 8. So they shouldn't say the first time we are introduced to Jodie is 1976 in Taxi Driver

So many of these actors were abused by their studios or their parents. Would have been good to give a more well-rounded story here. They left acting/became drug addicts/died of suicide for reasons, ya know.

Child stars on TV are quite ubiquitous. Child stars in movies, especially successful ones, are harder to come by. I also feel that Ron Howard has been more successful as an adult than when he was younger.

Devon Sawa is a ("washed up actor'') he been washed up since ("final destination") but he still acting now but he is just a TV show actor now on ("Chuckie") which i don't like the show and he's not even getting those big movies parts anymore, the only big thing he is known for is ("Casper'') back in 1995, and the last big movie he did was ("final destination'') that's just my opinion on Devon Sawa, i stopped liking him as a actor years ago, he just a (''has been'') now.

Really? You forgot Ron Howard, Brooke Sheild, Robert Downey Jr, Regina King, Ke Huy Quan (and his lawyer is Chunk from the Goonies), Kevin Bacon, Natalie Portman. Evan Peters, Joseph Gordan Levitt, will Weaton, Mayim Bailik, Michael J Fox, Michelle Geller, Christina Applegate and the list goes on. Then there's the ones who have become successful outside of Hollywood like Chunk from the Goonies, Shelia Kuel (politics), Dan Lloyd (teacher), Josh Savino (lawyer), Heather Langkemp (special effects), Mary Kate and Asley Olsen, Peter Ostrum (veterinarian)and of course Paul Peterson who has a company dedicated to helping child actors. So, most go on to actually be successful.
So, no mentions for Ron Howard? He went from Opie Taylor to Richie Cunningham to being one of the biggest directors of all time-and he doesn't even get an HM? I assume there will be a second list to correct this oversight!

I'm absolutely agree with this list. Shirley Temple is an icon child star til now. But, for me Michael Jackson deserve on this list too. He started sing as a kid and change as a mega star.
