Lifepo4 Battery Powered Drum Carding Machine

  • A while ago i made this drum carder for my girlfriend and it has worked great but its quite hard work to use as it needs clamping down and turning the handle gets old fast when trying to do a large quantity. I have most of the components left over from other projects so i decided to make it electric and battery powered so she can use it anywhere she likes. She often dose it in the garden on a nice day so i being battery powered will be perfect for that. the battery life is around two hours so she can do about 4 or 5 large batts of wool on a charge.

    I was thinking a foot-pedal, for an instant on and off. That just looks like a night-mare...with the automatic teeth pulling everything in...then you explained about the tension. Really nice design, good video!

    I love this! Reminds me of a similar conversion my Dad did to a rotary honey extractor - strapped a whopping great 12V motor and belt drive onto the handle with a speed controller so Mum didn't have to turn it by hand for hours at a time!

      I would like to own such a device.I build a transmission line speaker.The box of the speaker has a tunnel from the back of the speaker that goes up and comes back down to an opening in front of the box.This energy would be lost in a closed box.This tunnel is filled with wool at a density of 1 pound per cubic foot.I found some wool in hair fiber bats,it needs to be carded to fit in the tunnel at the wright density.I made 2 brushes with peaces of wood (shaped like a brush)with small finishing nails.It works but its a lot of work.This machine would save me a lot of work and time,wonder where its made ?

    Hey Kris, I would recommend a battery spot welder instead of soldering directly to the batteries. Lithium ion batteries can explode when you solder directly to them. You should spot weld a tin strip to the battery and then solder to the tin strip. They have spot welders are on ebay and not terribly priced. I have also seen people make them from spare parts and a car battery.

    • @1981dasimpson

      i have soldiered 1000s of lithuim cells with no problem high power the soldering iraon the bttter this way it heats and cools befor tasnfer to rest of cell happens

    • @runningray
      @runningray 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@1981dasimpson Not challenging what you are saying as I have also seen people solder lithium batteries. But it is not a good thing to do regardless of heat transfer. Even a little bit of heat can damage the plastic separator, pressure protections, or if the heat is left on a bit too long, the main internal lithium layers. So it is good advice to not directly solder on the battery. Not saying it will blow up or something... LOL it will just degrade the battery.

    • @RingingResonance
      @RingingResonance 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've also soldered 100s of lithium ion batteries. The worst part about it for me is that it's much more of a pain in the ass if you are doing a lot of them. However, if you are just doing a few then soldering is fine. Besides, he is using Lithium Iron Phosphate which is a much more stable chemistry battery.
      Perfect choice of battery for a project like this!

    • @KrisHarbour
      @KrisHarbour  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think it’s a lot from workplace culture. Most companies don’t care about safety but they do care about not getting sued so they go way over the top with safety so they don’t have to part with any money. This then filters down to people and they take it home with them. The other thing that happens is as people become more dependent on safety gear and guards the ability to focus on the task and the importance of making sure you and 100% sure of your body position and everything else goes out the window so you end up needing those things to keep you safe.
      Of course some things like hearing protection, stop switches, and stuff are just a good idea other stuff like covering a pretty safe machine with guards that would not really cause to much trouble even if you did get your hand in it is just way over the top.
      I wish people would remember that driving a car is 100x more dangerous than operating this machine even if it had 0 safety features.

    I randomly stumbled upon this video (It came up in my suggestions) Looks very efficient. This is where I offer unsolicited advice ; - ) Add a half moon cover over the intake drum on a hinge so it's easy to access for removing jams, but has a low feed opening to minimise the risk of fingers or clothes getting snagged. Add a pull out stop cord switch that cuts power if it gets tugged out Or an emergency stop button. Yes it has a switch I know, but a "Big red button" is usually easier to see and remember as when your fingers get nipped by the in-feed wires clarity of thought will go out the window!
    Great build especially the use of natural materials. I'm going to have a look through some of your other video's now, Bill.

    So I am a little worried that even with the fan, those batteries could get hot because you wrapped them in that tape and basically created a blanket around them. Would only be a problem in the summer, but still something to think about. Maybe a thermal fuse would be good to add to the inside of the battery pack. Better for that to blow than one of those batteries. Great project. If this is the content we can expect now that you have a shop, your channel has a bright future.

    Great job as always Kris but maybe a dead mans foot switch for safety? It would only work while your foot was on the switch so if something bad happens lift your foot and it stops. Just a thought as I know most people panic in an emergency and don't think straight.

    Dear Kris Harbour.
    👍👌👏 Very well done again and as always (video and work). What a great update and very helpful for your girlfriend. I don't know why but somehow I missed to watch this video until now. By the way: I wonder why there are not more views. Maybe the title should have better been more like: "Drum carding machine upgrade."
    So please kindly allow me to suggest that you consider to repost the video with a new title. Because utube would recommend it more if LifePo4 battery is not mentioned at the beginning of the title. Additionally: People interested in "wooly stuff" may search for drum carding machine but definitely not for LifePo4 battery powered...
    Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
    Best regards luck and health to all of you.

    I’d love to see her spinning if she feels comfortable to be on camera talking to us. As a spinner myself, I love the process and always looking out for wool videos to watch. Also very jealous that she has a drum carder and I dont 😂

    Wow, this is Very Good! Your girlfriend and you are amazing! I like the rooster at 2:58/2:59!, 5:45, 12:40 12:51...I stopped counting! Active bird! Maybe he wanted to help.... How did you learn to do thais? Looks great! (Kitty cat at 16:59 came to help). This is so interesting! I’ve always been interested to see how these things are done. Maybe you can get Dot to spin the wool into yarn for us to see! Great video and explanations! Love your accent!! ❤️ from America.
