The steal he gets where he pretends to follow his man on the dive cut but whips back around and steals it blind. That's incredible. Idk how he timed that so perfect. Watching a lot of film of his opponent? That is a phenomenal play honestly.

He saw the other player coming around to behind his guy, and instinctively knew that guy was to be the target of a pass. Also, a little bit of a broken play by the Spurs. The player he was guarding should have either tried to screen Stockton, or should have cut harder to the basket to keep Stockton honest. But he just kinda lazy jogged through the play instead, which allowed Stockton an easy gamble.
I saw that. Amazing. Bird you used to do that a lot. Pretend to guard someone else and get the other side false sense of security and then pounce somewhere completely different
I think that’s the thing, basketball plays used to be very procedural. There is a ton more read and react in offenses today.

The hornets commentator is close to it with an intensity in doing it too. Might not be 100% the same as the classic play by play announcers, but almost. He’s one of the few reasons why i watch hornets games.
I bet it changed because they have to promote every product and service while... well doing their job.

For all the hoopla recently regarding some stat keepers allegedly cooking the books for Stockton, I only saw 2 questionable assists out of 28 (!), both of which would be, to my estimation, qualified assists the way they are counted in today's NBA. That John Stockton wasn't a legendary point guard is a narrative that should be buried. The dude kept up this incredible pace for 19 seasons, only missing 22 games.
John Stockton is the GOAT pound for pound.
Stockton is, was, and always will be my guy. He was incredible, there will never be another like him. Best PG of all time.

Every steal gave his team an extra possession. He’s the all time steals leader still after so many years. Proves how important he was for his team. He’s my #1 all time PG. Sorry Magic…

If the team best chance to score is to put the point guard to score then why pass those shots? There have been MANY point guards since the beginning of the league that were high scoring point Guards. Jerry West. Oscar Robertson. Even Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas, would take over games if needed. If their team needed 40 points, magic or isiah would get that.

Yeah. I think the assists attributed were more genuine than today's NBA. The most I saw were 2 dribbles before making a FG after a pass. Nowadays, a lot of the assists are given even though the player scoring the FG off the pass has to make 3 to 4 dribbles, fakes, eurosteps, side steps and spin moves before scoring.
100% efficiency? 0 - 2 in finals series doesn't scream efficiency...

He was also one of the top players in steals during his entire career. Stockton was the consumate point guqrd, while Johnson was just a showboat and only in it for himself. In other words SELFISH!!!! Now before you throw in my face about championships, keep in mind Johnson was surounded by a put together team, bought and paid for by ownership. Only reason Stockton "far out paced" Magic in assists (not even that far btw) was because his only great skill was throwing the rock to Karl Malone and letting him score. If Stockton didn't have Malone, I guarantee you he wouldn't have as many assists as he did.@@robertbrown3471

The two points John Stockton makes in the 30 seconds of this video, if it was have made by Michael Jordan every one of us would know and remember that play, just because Michael Jordan's way more appealing body language. That was an amazing play. Just Stockton not flashy but he is the best point guard ever and his numbers are there to prove it. Later in the clip even blocks David Robinson dunk and take the ball to score two more points in a fast transition just the way Michael Jordan have done in that famous clip we know from him.

That's what made Stockton scary. His passes were simple, TOO SIMPLE. He knows the plays inside and out that he knows when his teammates will be in position. He is plays such a basic style but is the best at it.

Stockton was a career 38% 3pt shooter. If you shoot 38% from 3, you're helping your team by taking wide open 3's, unless there's a 65%+ option in the paint -- and most teams don't have that, and certainly not every trip down the floor. In today's NBA he'd averaged +5 pts per game on the same number of shots just thanks to players now having the greenlight to shoot open 3s.
@@JakeStine And probably around 2-3 fewer assists. Using more possessions on himself/passing to guys trying to make a 3 makes it harder to rack up assist numbers like that, which is why his record will probably never be beaten.

If you ask Karl Malone…. He benefited more from Stockton than the other way around. Had Stockton been on a team that needed more points to win, he would have become a better scorer. Isaiah had 5 HOFs on his championship teams, the best third leg Stockton ever had (during his own prime years) was a 14 point Jeff Hornacek.
Stockton made 2 NBA finals while being on a 2 superstar team with very little depth besides those two superstars. And Utah tortured a proper superteam of those Bulls in two NBA finals in a row, 97 and 98. Stockton is a PG super legend. He never played on a superteam. Not for one second of his career.

I remember the 90s. I was a teen that trained basketball back then. I remember when Hornacek openly admited that kids should idolise MJ, and it's perfectly normal and that Jeff Hornacek himself is absolutely not a player that any kid would admire. And he said it during those finals in 1997 or 1998. And THAT TYPE of player was the third best option on the Jazz roster... While the third best player in the Bulls was... Rodman... It wasn't a fair game, ever. Not even in the 60s. And not in the the 90s too.

The Spurs couldn't get rid of him fast enough..they traded him for WIll Perdue straight up...He was pretty good in 95-96 but averaged 5ppg and 8 rpg in the 96-97 playoffs (and 2ppg and 7.7 rpg in the Finals) and 5 ppg and 11rpg in 97-98 (3ppg and 8 rpg in the Finals) ..on 37%FG !! that's pretty awful ! And I know that "he wasn't there for offense"..but he basically became a liability on offense.. it was pretty much 4 vs 5 on offense when he was on the court...which people don't realize..as it put even a bigger burden on Jordan to score...at least in the first 3-peat, Grant could hit a shot..And 8 rpg isn't that impressive !! Malone would grab more and score 30 !!

@@jefeseason4990 there are definitely many pgs that are more skilled, more athletic, better handle..etc...in terms of efficiency however, few possess his package of basketball IQ, toughness, etc..there is no wasted moves, no flash, and he does what a PG is supposed to do..control the offense, distribute, get everyone involve, look for mismatches..etc. A basic pass to the right player is still a pass. Besides, all others great passers also accumulates multiple basic passes..

As much as I didn’t like these guys back in the day…this is basketball. None of the bs carrying, walking, palming every dribble, suspending the ball in the air…extra step when you’ve picked up your dribble for a jumper. No hockey assists…the pass leading directly to a basket. Just precision playing and shooting. He’s throwing one incredibly well placed pass after another, mixing in no look dimes, out running greyhound’s to the cup for layup’s. WTF 😬 JUST SCHOOLING folk all over the court…baiting them into passes he can steal. And in case you missed it…he accounted for minimum 76 points. If any 3’s were made…maybe 80!!! They never quite got over the hump, but this was a great team, in an era where cheating wasn’t baked into the rules.
Great point of the palming. It still annoys me that so many players palm the ball. Also, do not forget how disciplined they were while running the lanes. A great point guard will make the big guys run every time down the court. Karl Malone was build like a dinosaur but he ran like a deer. Moreover, huge props to Jerry Sloan for this clean style of basketball.
Everyone KNEW they were going to pick-n-roll but they couldn't stop it. Plus Stockton is known for setting the toughest picks in the league. 6'1", 170, missed 22 games in 19 seasons. No load management for him. If the best ability is availability, there's none better.

Well, then AD and LeBron would have better FG% and fewer assists, their record would be dramatically better, and there would be much less non-sense on the floor. Yes, but I still remember. I also remember his professionalism, but most of all I remember his post-entry passes that allowed his team mate to explode to the basket in one move leaving the defender witless for a Karl Malone dunk or lay-in. This is a truly lost art.
