Never forget that they created an entire classical piano and violin duet for this game, one which follows the story of Sunny's life in the most beautiful way. This entire scene was the magnum opus of Omori, showing everything that this game truly is. Not one of fantasy, but one of love and tragedy.

Your description of this game as a tragedy makes me think of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in Star Wars. Yes, he suffered his entire life because of the manipulation of other people and because of his own self-hatred... but at the end he did free himself from those burdens, finding the courage to save himself and those he cared about. And when he died... he was truly happy for the first time in years.
Was his life tragic? Arguably, yes. But he broke free of that tragedy in his finest hour.

    SPOILERS
Mari was talented and social. Sunny was shy and timid. When he got the violin he suddenly had a weight on him but he didnt want to let his friends down. After all they bought it for him. They even showed us that he was more interested in the box than the violin as a way of showing the mental weight he immediately recieved from the violin. He practiced and practiced but he was tired. And he was anxious to be in front of a crowd. But the perfectionist mari, as seen in the photos where she would keep on practicing the song, kept pushing him to perfect the song over and over for the recital. So one day after a fight sunny broke the violin which mari and the others bought for him. Of course she would get angry and expect an explanation. But sunny had enough and pushed her. He didnt mean to push her down the stairs. He loved her and probably just pushed out of instinct and rage. Seeing what happened basil was probably the one to suggest to hang her corpse. Because he didnt want his beloved bestfriend to be hated by the others. He convinced himself that it wasnt sunny that pushed mari but something else. Someone as great as sunny could never kill his own sister. So they hung her. Making it seem like it was never sunnys fault. They were 12 year olds and were scared. Its not out of the realm of possibility for them to do something like that to save themselves. But what was sad was all that depression and anxiety and guilt and denial they had to go through. They were 12 years old and they had to go through 4 years of mental hell to the point of becoming pale and skinny. Not to mention basil having to go through bullying and her grandmothers illness. Its no wonder that if they didnt move on both of them wouldve probably commit suicide from all that trauma. Damn i know what they did was bad but i really understand and empathize with them.
I know others have probably wrote similar comments but i just want to write mine. Hopefully new players who see this comment can start to understand what sunny and basil was going through a lot better.

Man. I know vibrato is a thing for Violins but in some parts of these songs it sounds more like Sunny is shaking trying to play the song... it's probably been said before but it just adds that much more imo

    • @bugjams
      @bugjams 3 ปีที่แล้ว +462

I read this thing about why violins lend themselves so well to sad music. Supposedly it's because of all instruments, the strings on a violin mimic the human vocal cords most similarly. In other words, when a violin trembles, it gives our brains the same signal as when someone's voice is trembling when they're crying.
So yeah, when Sunny shakes while playing the violin, it's basically the same as hearing someone trying to talk through their tears. :(

    • @adniaquila1093
      @adniaquila1093 3 ปีที่แล้ว +100

As a violin student, I do think I agree with the prospect of Sunny shaking while performing the piece, but for another reason. At moments when the violin part picked up the solo, the tone quality produced from the bow stroke would thin/fade at times and this could be due to a shaky bow. A shaky bow can happen because of improper technique or posture, but I like to interpret it as Sunny's strong emotions surfacing enough to cause him to tremble and lose total control over his bow making it shake.
Super sorry if this was long and incomprehensible! I just love analyzing the music in this game :)

The end to this song never ceases to give me that last punch to the gut... Especially when seeing Mari in the coffin. Ever since Basil dropped that photo, I knew she likely passed away. And throughout most of the game, they don’t even try to hide it. But I dunno, just seeing her lying there among the flowers while knowing what happened made it that much more impactful.

I've seen this song interpreted as a lot of things - acceptance of Mari's passing, Omori being defeated - but never as Mari and Sunny's life together.
Mari starts the song with her piano, being older by three years. Sunny comes in with the violin when the melody starts. The second part represents the overwhelming practicing, over and over and over again. It hurt. It was hard. I would know. I've played this piece before. the transition between the second and third parts represents Sunny going to the top of the stairs, and throwing his violin down them.
The climax represents the fight between Mari and Sunny after the violin is thrown. It's loud, fast and makes you cry as to what is about to happen next.
Sunny pushes Mari down the stairs, towards the broken violin. Her bad knee makes it hard to balance. Sunny hears a deafening crunch, and Mari moves no more.
The longest two seconds of Sunny's life.
This is represented by the hard tritone just before the final resolution, and in the ending itself the piano stops a little before the violin.
    Mari is dead.
The regression into isolation, and Basil's Plan begin.
Remina, a piece we heard earlier in the soundtrack represents not only Mari falling down the stairs in the most horrifying way possible, but also the regret, shock, terror, sadness, and sheer inability to move Sunny was feeling after the death of Mari in the shaky violin that comes in later in the song.
This game broke me in the best way possible.
Thank you for reading my manifesto.

I always used to find it difficult to resonate with this song, and never really understood why people thought this song was so emotional. I have heard other songs in this soundtrack that actually managed to hurt me, like "Where we Used to Play," "See You Tomorrow" and "Treehouse: Back Together Again," but wasn't able to see how this song managed to carry the same level of emotional weight as those three. But then, it hit me - *it didn't.* The thing that makes Duet different from the other "emotional" songs in this game is the fact that this one doesn't actually bring about a feeling of nostalgia. The other songs make you feel like you're looking back on an old memory from your childhood, but Duet has none of that. Instead, it feels like a memory you didn't experience, or rather, one you *COULDN'T* have experienced, as if this moment was taken away from you by something you couldn't control. That's why this theme works so well, too. It's a song about longing for something you could never have, like how Sunny feels about his duet with his sister, a song about what could've been, if only he didn't get into a fight with Mari. And that's what makes this song hit so different from every single other song in this game.

This game broke me, not in the ‘on the floor sobbing’ kind of way, but in my own kind of way. I’m not the kind of person to cry when something sad happens in a game/movie/show (which I believe is because when I was much younger, my brother and sister used to make fun of me for crying when watching movies together, because they were kids and kids are… kids, anyways back on topic), instead, I tend to respond by just shutting off, entering a state almost shock as I take everything in, my brain stops working and I break. I was in a call with a friend for the entirety of me playing Omori, they had played the game before and had gotten me into it. The whole time we were playing I was cracking jokes, even at the dark and scary parts. But I entered this ending and I stopped trying to banter, I was immersed, and after duet and the ending, all jokes were gone, I was just broken, he even commented how he had never seen me like this. I still do feel the aftershock of that ending partially, as a recurring thought which I linger on for a while, 10/10 game!

Someone mentioned in the comments that around 1:49 you can hear the violin making shaky notes which sounds like someone crying. And to add onto this, it could be a metaphor about how sunny is messing up because he’s remembering his sister and the pain is affecting his life ( his performance. ) but by the end of the song, he finishes it off with his violin alone and beautifully. This can be a metaphor in itself that Mari is gone but sunny is able to pick himself up and move on and continue his performance ( his life ) and continue it beautifully without shaky notes ( without pain ) anymore.

Writing this on an alt account
To the random internet stranger who’s reading this, this is my story, who i’ve never comprehensively told to anybody before now.
A few years ago, I had a very close friend. As somebody who grew up having basically nothing, having basically ANY sort of friend meant everything to me, but this person was different. They were kind, understanding, always there for me, always listened to me when I was having issues in my life or if i just wanted to talk about Sonic or Fighting Games. They were also incredibly funny, and an overall amazing person to be around. They were an awesome person, and because of that, i’m not surprised that they became incredibly popular at school, especially within the LGBTQ+ and theater kids, such as myself. Despite this popularity, and al the friends that they had, they still chose me, some stupid autistic kid with bad social skills, as one of their BEST friends, and that meant absolutely everything to me.
However, I started to get anxious that they would slowly start to forget about, and that we’d drift apart. My attachment issues didn’t like this, so I did something VERY stupid, that being vent about it in detail in a discord server we were both in, and a day later, on March 20th 2022, a date that will haunt me forever, i decided to tell them that i didn’t trust them and was thinking they were gonna leave them behind. This of course rubbed them the wrong way, and caused us to have a falling out. Let me tell ya, That next month might have been the WORST month of my life.
Due to a mix of autism, and a very secluded upbringing, I had no idea how to handle this situation, and my mental health and self-esteem tanked because of it. I thought I was a terrible person because of it, thought that I’d never be able to make friends, and even contemplated suicide during that time. The day after our falling out, I sent them a big message, profusely apologizing for what had happened, and while they understood that I was sorry, I could tell that they didn’t want anything to do with me, even though I tried to regain their friendship. At one point, I was sitting, waiting for homeroom to start(At our school, we could select specific rooms to be in for four week sessions for homeroom), when they came in, and we made direct eye contact for a solid second, before they saw one of their other friends, and they very loudly said “oh thank god, i know somebody in this class.” I’ve never been able to get that out of my head since then. Looking back, I definitely should’ve given them a lot more space, they deserved it.
A month after my apology, they went up to me and told me that they realized that I regretted what I had done; and that they were open to being friends again. This meant the world to me. For the next few months, I’d try talking to them a lot. Over the summer, I pry tried talking to them an average of 4 times a week. Looking back, the convos we had were a lot dryer than before our falling out, and they were pry just trying not to hurt my feelings. I also probably shouldn’t have spammed them with messages a month after a falling out.
Later in the fall, I had seen them without their glasses for the very first time. Due to my inexperience of social experience, mainly bc of both my secluded upbringing as well as having basically no friend growing up, I for some reason thought it was a good idea to let them know that I thought they looked adorable, why understandably made them uncomfortable. The reason i know it made them uncomfortable is because they told their friend to tell my boyfriend to tell me that it made them uncomfortable. I felt terrible about this. The fact that it made them so uncomfortable that they didn’t have the guts to tell it to me directly, but instead had to go through multiple people to get the message to me, it stings, man. I really wish i had more self awareness. After that, I decided that i had to let them be, let them live without me, so I won’t hurt them again. Looking back, I still wish I apologized for the comment I made about them without glasses as soon as i found out it was bothering them.
For the next year, that was basically it, as I gave them distance, and rarely spoke to them outside of a few rare occasions. One day, I decided that I needed to apologize to them, for everything that I’ve brought up, as well as things that I probably forgot to mention. It was a pain is the ass to schedule, but we eventually found time to meet up back in January of this year. It was brief, kinda vague, but I think they understood the general point, and how long this had haunted me. They finally forgave me, dapped me up, and went on their merry way. For the rest of the day, it felt like I had 3AM motivation, but it hit at 9 AM Instead, and last the entire day. The rest of that week was an emotional high point for me.
Ironically enough, for our last semester of classes, we shared a first period class, so we saw each other a lot, and even talked a bit. I eventually reached out to them, asking if they would be interested in meeting up sometime to hang out again, like old times, and they said they were busy. after a few more attempts, I gave up, realizing that they most likely don’t want hang out.
During that time, I found the wonderful game that this song comes from, and oh my, i found it at the perfect time. This game has taught me that yeah, we may have done some shitty thibgs in the past, and there’s no justifying those actions, and they’ll haunt us forever. But that doesn’t mean we’re bad people, or that those mistakes define us.
It’s okay to miss people that you hurt in the past. It’s okay to forgive yourself for the bad actions you took in the past. It’s okay to use those mistakes as learning experiences so you don’t make them again. It’s okay to own up to your past, and push through it.
Cas, if you’re somehow reading this message that very clearly wasn’t meant for you, I just want you to know that none of this was your fault. You couldn’t have done anything about any of this, and it’s okay to move on without me. You’re an amazing person, and I know you’re going to do great things one day. I hope you think of me every once in a while. I hope you look back fondly on the good times we had as much as I do. And please, have a great future, you deserve it. ✨
Thank you for reading, kind internet stranger, and I hope you have a great day. Best wishes!

"I tried, in the end, I did." You were brave enough to apologise, that means something. Also, I find it rude he had to tell you that by having to pass it thru other friends. *SPOILERS*
My sister and I have always been a bit different from eachother.
She’s older than me. A bit of a perfectionist, and honestly mean sometimes. But she’s so wonderfully kind when I need it, and past her rude comments she’ll always hold me when I need to cry and she’ll tell me that everything will be okay in the most honest way she can.
She’s more social than me. I’ve never been good at making friends. People in general scare me quite a bit. The idea of talking to someone is terrifying sometimes. I’m quiet, but I get angry easier. I don’t hold expectations as well as she does.
She plays piano. She’s not very good, but she plays. I used to sit with her while she practiced, and I’d laugh when she’d get a note wrong. She wouldn’t be mad- she’d laugh too, and make some stupid joke that would derail practice entirely.
I love my sister. And I hate her sometimes, too. She’s kind and mean and wonderful and terrible. She’s human. She’s a person.
Going through the story of Omori, I did not expect it to get to me. I’ve played and watched plenty of horror games before. While some have scared of affected me more then others, none have made a lasting impact on me.
But Omori was different, I suppose.
    Especially this scene.
When I reached this part of the game, I cried. Tears were falling down my face, almost blurring my vision of the screen. I just couldn’t take it. Learning about sunny and mari, about their relationship, about what sunny did... it broke me. Because I could see myself in his place. I understand how he must have felt, I know why he pushed her. It was impulse out of anger. It was an accident.
Seeing sunny and Mari grow up together, seeing sunnys guilt grow, it just brought me back to my sister. The sister I saw so much of Mari reflected in.
I barely slept that night. I just couldn’t stop thinking- about sunny, about mari- about my sister.
I don’t know if I have much else to say. This game was beautiful. I could see myself in sunnys place.
Maybe I’ll try to take up violin. I’m not very musical, but I’d like to be able to play a duet with my sister.
Even if we’re both not very good.

Final Duet is the first time I have ever cried while playing a video game. I have a very bad issue with not being able to cry even when I feel immense emotions. This helped me so much. I sobbed so much, it hurt. It's so beautiful though.

My whole room was pitch black, and I was terrified when I was fighting omori, with all of the distorted music and all of the things in the background. Actually found out that one translation of “Omori” is “A Weight” and I think that fits nicely for what he’s supposed to resemble in Sunny’s mind. Omori is the weight of Sunny’s actions keeping him from moving forward in life, keeping him in the little world of his where everything was still ok, and eventually keeping him from coming to terms with reality in the bad ending and taking control to make Sunny kill himself. The weight is hostile and unforgiving when Sunny goes down the path to try and accept reality and forgive himself as Mari would want, the weight does everything it can to either hold Sunny back or end it all. And when Sunny perseveres and plays that final duet, Sunny comes to terms with the past and present, and the weight is lifted and accepting. Omori is only there as long as Sunny holds and represses the weight of Mari’s death.

All of us went on this journey together.
We all saw the same stupid jokes
    The same lovable characters
The same joys and sorrows that came with it.
Some of our choices may of been different but we all ended up here.
We all fell in love with a world much like our own.
But it's not all fantasy because our dreams can come true.
    We can recover.
We can try again after failure.
Through support and the kindness of others we can reach out to those who need it most.
    "I enjoyed this adventure.
I enjoyed being able to experience and go through it with each and every one if you."
    - Elle
When I was on a road to recovery someone asked me to list what I wanted to do and is worth fighting for and the first thing on that list was to play omori on release. I promised myself that I would attempt to make the effort of recovery for this story.

I've been listening through all of these videos and reading all of your comments along the way. This comment with the music finally made me begin to cry. Everyone has something that they are running from, internal fears and personal traumas. When we are able to share that with others we begin to heal. The year 2020 has been terrible for me, like it has been for many people, and has sowed the seeds of depression in me. I have begun to have crossing thoughts of self-harm and suicide but always immediately shake them out. Like Sunny, I have plenty of friends that have saved me from myself and made me happy.

Facing the Magnum Opus of this soundtrack, I have a question in mind:
"How can a music grows on you?"
It started from the title screen with this colorful harmony but now with this pulsing piano we recognize this musical style we hear throughout this game.
    A Waltz.
And then this violin alone in "Remembrance." was the missing part of this "DUET" giving more musical possibility to this piece.
In this soundtrack it's all about progression. How this song evolved from the beginning to the end showing SUNNY's progression to get there ("Title", "Do You Remember?", "DUET").
If "By Your Side." represents MARI and "A Home For Flowers" represents BASIL. "DUET" represents SUNNY and MARI together playing one last time before moving forward.
When some have been moved by a masterpiece, they want to forget in order to relive this emotional moment. But in music it's all about
    Remembering and cherish this moment.
This is how a music grows on you.

I think one of the the most interesting parts about this entire story is you know everything Sunny has done is wrong yet you can’t help but understand or justify the decisions he made out of fear.
They definitely hurt Basil the most, and I think that’s why the mission to rescue Basil and make amends hurts so much- because you only want the best to come of the situation before being hit with the brutal realization that it’s not that simple.
And yet, it makes it all the more amazing when this scene happens and you finally are able to repair even just a little of what had been damaged in those four years.

During the 1890s, Russian physiologist, Ivan Pavlov was researching salivation in dogs in response to being fed. He inserted a small test tube into the cheek of each dog to measure saliva when the dogs were fed (with a powder made from meat). Pavlov predicted the dogs would salivate in response to the food placed in front of them, but he noticed that his dogs would begin to salivate whenever they heard the footsteps of his assistant who was bringing them the food. When Pavlov discovered that any object or event which the dogs learned to associate with food (such as the lab assistant) would trigger the same response, he realized that he had made an important scientific discovery.

Roughly 9 years ago, my sister died of cancer.
I was only ten at the times.
I started to slowly realise how little time we had spent together, all the times I wasn't very nice to her, every single one of her smiles and the fact that she still didn't give her first kiss to her boyfriend because she said he wasn't ready yet.
She would be there to comfort me when I needed it, she would always make me feel important and every time I was sad, she would try to make me laugh.
I remember her saying how the tubes that helped her breathe made her sound like a kitty purring.
She's forever gone, I will never heal, but that's not supposed to happen. I am just supposed to live now. Continue living.
    Thanks, OMORI. Thanks, OMOCAT.

Healing doesn't necessarily mean the wounds disappear completely. Scars may (and often will) remain. What Sunny's performance does is illustrate the beauty that arises from those wounds and scars. He can't go back to before Mari's death, but he can stand as a testament to the love that never really left him at all. Broken though he might be, he has grown stronger through his acceptance of the truths that have brought him here. In other words, Omori is not merely facing Sunny here... he's facing Hero, Kel, Aubrey, Basil, Mari AND Sunny all at once. Together, as they've always been, as they'll always be.

You know what I find most tragic about this, what really hits in gutter?
We see her life, full of everything. As if story writes itself with her, future is so bright you can totally picture it yourself without any help.
And then it all stops at 2:00
You can't help yourself but ask "how this can be her fate?".
That crippling dread of young life lost, even in happiest of endings this dread still preserves (this is to me why OMORI ultimately stays and does not succumb) it's indeed a tragedy when even the best outcome possible for story comes with bittersweet aftertaste. I am tipping my hat towards OMOCAT what a story, what a game.

  • @morganyu9128
    @morganyu9128 3 ปีที่แล้ว +75

The violin is shaky, wavy, and it feels like the violinist is crying (Sunny), especially during the second half, which he never got to play with his sister. This is probably because Sunny never really wanted the burden of playing the violin, but he took it up just to make his sister and his friends happier. The piano on the other hand, feels almost stronger in the second half, as if Mari's even more prominent in the lives of others around her after her death then she ever was, perhaps slightly breaking the beautiful symbiotic relationship the violin and the piano had in the first half of the song.
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
That being said, this game means everything to me. As a suicidal teenager, this was the thing that made me realize that I have empty spots in my memory, things that should be there but aren't, notes that reference events that I have no recollection of, traumatic incidents wiped away clean. I had it pretty rough, but it just keeps getting worse, you feel like a fraud because you can't remember why you're down, or why you slit your forearm for the sixth time this week, or why you burned your hand again, or why you cut off your finger with an axe. This game, although extremely painful for me, gave me more closure then I've ever had in my entire life.
Thank you OMOCAT. Thank you team OMO. I really mean it, you changed my life for the better.
    Thank you.

    I don't know.
Everyone talking about this is a really sad song,but...
I really think this isn't a sad song, this is pure hapiness, Sunny finally confront his pass, finally accept it,and now he forgive himself, finally he can begin again to live without guilt.
It's a really beautiful moment, finally sunny can live again.

its neither sad or happy, to me its bittersweet. Sunny faces his trauma and learns to move on, to forgive himself, but the scene also shows the happy moments of the past together with mari, how much she really meant to him. Moments that, no matter what, wont come back. And neither will Mari.

I finished Omori late at night. It was like... 4AM. I was already crying by Sunny remembering everything and then the fight with OMORI didn't make things better.
And then this plays. It's so beautiful. I cried even more than I had before.
It's such a happy tune but the memories and the happy times associated with it..
    All those memories.
    They're a little sad now...

I think it's quite funny that, this entire moment will always be seen the first time, even if spoiled.
Say, you know damn near everything, read every little thing, studied every little thing you can just for the kicks.
This duet is always earned. You have to commit to developing these bonds and hard investment with Aubrey, Kel, Hero, Basil, Sunny, Mari, to really feel this scene the first time.
Its not that it doesn't work without context, its that you have to already be deep in your gut sitting with every bit of hurt and sadness from that encounter with the enemy.
Its not that you'll be unworthy, its because, it's just memories. rose tinted memories with these individuals who are still mourning their friend every day.
And, after that hefty journey of trying to make sense of the flood of memories coming to you, the flood of pain that used to be so distant is here, that pain that eats away at this guilt burdened boy so much, he lost touch with EVERYTHING, not just his friends, his family, his sister, but, the memories that bound them all together, and this little thing called self.
You have to earn those bonds back, to really feel why these rose tinted memories are so important to the boy.

@@zaytaz9331 yes, when Mari first fell, Basil could ¿should? have said Mari just tripped, but it wouldn't have really mattered what Basil said, it maybe would have helped Aubrey, Kel, and especially Hero a little bit more, but Sunny and Basil would still be just as troubled, Sunny needed to except it happened and it was an accident on Sunny's part, while Basil needed to accept good people can do bad.
(It's also Story-Wise less interesting for Basil to stage it as a trip instead of an suicide, and when you play a Story including game, having a great Story is kinda important)
