  • To give jeans their signature blue hue and fading abilities, it’s estimated that over 70,000 tons of synthetic indigo dye are made each year. One team of scientists is reverse engineering indigo molecules using microbes and sugar to clean up the process.

      DNA sequencing and molecular cloning have been around since 1973, but the equipment is improving and new applications coming up. Also, they didn't give the molecule to the bacteria, they found the gene that codes for indigo production and injected it into the bacteria.

    Honestly I never really cared about the color of my jeans for the most part. I don't want ones that are "pre aged" but otherwise I could care less about the color. I care more about how they're made, what they're made of, and how comfy they are.

    Till yesterday I was working with blue denim pants in a garment factory in Bangladesh on behalf of OVS. I had to quality check 14000+ of them in 9 days for upto 13 hours a day from 7 am to 9 pm,lunch break at 11.30 am. After the 3rd day I realized I don't have my fingerprints anymore,they are gone because of friction and probably because of the dye. My whole body turned blue and it won't go away even after washing my hands with soap. My clothes turned shades of blue only after wearing a day. Did I mention the factory has poor ventilation so it's freaking hot!

      These international buyers don't really care about workers,they just look the other way and let it be as long as they don't get exposed. Yesterday someone from Calvin Klein visited the factory so they let us at 6 pm because legally they're not allowed to make us work more than 10 hours. Even though inflation is almost 10% in Bangladesh these giant entities don't want to increase the price. We get paid according to a 2019 resolution. I spend upto 15 hours everyday on this job.

      It's a Bangladeshi group with multinational members working on the higher levels and like everyone else they have mostly fixed buyers who makes their brand clothing here. The only thing they give is money which they provide on the basis of lowest possible bid. There are Brands like Zara,NEXT, Calvin Klein and more but I don't know the full list cause I am not allowed in any other places other than where I am supposed to work.
      Anything you buy the cost is usually 15% of that for less expensive brands. I know that cause I had access to confidential documents of multiple retail Brands like Zara, NEXT,Kiabi,Aldi and more where I used to work previously.

    wait, what does jean fabric look like before applying dye?

  • @tom4ivo
    @tom4ivo ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One complication is that the indigo dye doesn't penetrate the cotton fibers, but merely coats them. The fading is caused by the dye falling off the fibers as they are worn, and the fibers rubbed, leaving the white cotton thread. Getting a dye to stay on the fibers while also not penetrating the fibers is the tricky part. Would probably be a lot easier if we were willing to give up the iconic fading.

The chemicals needed to reduce it to the leucobase will still be used and companies not better regulated because of their supplier. The carbon footprint may be smaller, but that was not mentioned so I assume it is not.
