      Global Triathlon Network for anyone who wants to wear socks on the run, put the sock on and then roll it off, kind of like putting on a condom in reverse when you're setting up the transition area. When you have wet, sweaty feet, the sock will roll easily down your foot.

    I agree with some other commenters that it would be great to have a bike mount tutorial, perhaps with different options/skill progression/tips/things to avoid. As for time saving, do a few transition entrance/exit run throughs before the race so you know exactly where your bike is and where you're going.

    One of the most important aspects of transition is to ensure you know exactiy where your gear is. It sounds simple but when you arrive in transition after the swim or the bike, it's so easy to become disorientated & if you're unsure it can then lead to panic & escalate. Have some markers to look for where possible, obviously not related to other people's gear as it may not be there when you arrive. Look around for things that will help get you in the vicinity, like eg trees, bushes, signs, marks on the surface or fence, hoardings, etc. Also ensure you know which row you need to run along. That's a crucial one. Have a few walk-throughs so you're looking at the lie of the land exactly as you will in the race. Losing your way can lose you way more time than the process of changing. It will also put you in the wrong state of mind for the next stage.

    some races i've done don't allow race belts inside the wetsuit (or they are a pool swim), so when having them in T1, i've realised having them already clipped up and sliding your legs into them can save valuable seconds in Transition rather than having it unclipped and struggling to get it clipped on around your waist

    • @MarkCathcart
      @MarkCathcart 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      USA Triathlon doesn't require you to use them until the run, so you just run out of triathlon and put them on in the first 100m or so of the run.

    Putting your helmet up might save some time if it's still there when you get to T1. It looks like the elites have more area then most of us age groupers and I've found my helmet a couple of bikes over with my sunglasses on the ground when I get to T1 because people are grabbing bikes as fast as they can and racks move. I leave my helmet on the ground now so that it's consistently where I left it.

    For wetsuit removal off the feet, baby oil works well but can be messy. Better sequence is after your suit is on. Easiest & non-messy option that lasts well even in seawater is Spray & Cook but opt for the olive oil type. AFTER putting wetsuit on, spray ankles & top of feet and lastly the non-watch wrist & top of both hands. It literally takes a few seconds. Then cap the aerosol can and pop it back in your bag.

    Best solution for the wetsuit is to cut the legs short at a diagonal so there is a big gap. Just cut as far up as possible where there is still a taped seam. A diagonal cut makes a bigger hole. And lots of baby oil.

    Had my second triathlon a few days ago. Did my T1, everything nice and fast, then when trying to mount the bike, my chain fell out and got stuck in the frame. Naturally I fell right ont my knee. Tried to fix it, mounted again, got stuck again, fell on the other side. Someone from the crew then helped me to fix the chain as good as possible, but the rear derailleur was stuck in a low gear. Still did the rest of the Tri (at 150 rpm or so..) after the ~10min T1, smeared with blood and grease. Moral of the story, shit happens sometimes and check your chain after placing the bike in the transition zone. Mine worked fine before, but a rubber band from a previous wave got stuck in my chain messing it up.

    # Ask GTN: Why do triathletes attach their shoes to the pedal? I watched them and could not find a reason; on the contrary, I think it’s time wasting pedaling with the feet on the shoe and then try to put your feet into them while biking, instead of pedaling full throttle with the shoes mounted in the transition.

    • @TheFeldhamster
      @TheFeldhamster 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      SunPower33 If you watch the pros you'll see that they're really fast into their shoes after mounting their bike. So for them it's faster to run barefoot than with cleated shoes. If you don't have that skill you're probably faster putting on your shoes in transition and running to the mount line in bike shoes even if they will hinder your running a bit.

    • @SunPower33
      @SunPower33 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheFeldhamster : thank you.
      How much time can you save by running barefoot vs. running with bike shoes on to mitigate the loss of time trying to put on the shoes on the bike (because it has to be a certain loss) vs. pedaling full throttle from the moment you mount the bike?
      I cannot run barefoot, so for me it’s not an option but I’m curious to see the time savings/losses from the flying mount to the regular one.

    • @TheFeldhamster
      @TheFeldhamster 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SunPower33 I never measured it myself and personally, running barefoot is awful and slow for me. But I'm pretty sure the elite measure and train for it and could put a number on it.
      When I watch age groupers I do think that most are not able to do it fast enough and probably would save more time just putting on their shoes in transition.

    Should you wear socks in T2 for the run leg?

    • @chadmenestrina2295
      @chadmenestrina2295 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. I have tried both techniques because I read about and saw elites use both. I think it really comes down to two things: comfort and distance. For instance, if you haven't trained without socks, I wouldn't recommend it. You will get some major calluses without socks and it could really hurt during the race or even take you out of the race. The trick is to build those up over several weeks, starting with short distances and building up over time. Second is how comfortable it is to go without socks. I have Saucony Lifeforms and they feel great. However, I did have to build up to that point for long-distance running (ie: non sprint distances). For awhile I thought it might save time, but if you're in a race longer than a sprint, I watched the pros and most of them put socks on. Here's a great video of the Half Ironman at Oceanside this past March: th-cam.com/video/TtV-XRzrdtA/w-d-xo.html. I like to learn from the pros, so here's what they do.

I also have during sprint races but since my focus once we can race again after covid 19 is going to be sprint races I may try to find a shoe and condition my feet to being able to run without socks. The time it saves becomes more important in a sprint race.

    • @thomassarda8207
      @thomassarda8207 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PATM0R3 actually you can do both I compete in france youth championships and I get my feet directly into the shoes, it depends if you can be quick enough, and you most importantly need to build up speed before you get onto your bike wich means you can avoid easily other competitors who are strugling just after the line (you don't have to run a lot maybe 2 meters).
      I hope it will help.
      Ps: I don't know your age but the older you will get the harder it will certainly be to jump quickly onto your bike because your body will start to lose its potential of contorsion.
