    Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Your explanation is clear and straight forward. I'm going to save money changing the fluid myself. My '93 Ranger has 150,000 miles and guy before(original owner) said he never changed the fluid. I'm guessing the fluid coming out will be pretty dark. This video is just the "how to" I needed.

      @@hustleyourknowledge NEGatory! Every moving part (gears, synchros, bearings, etc.) of the Mazda M5OD is designed to work BEST with ATF Type Mercon! I know ATF seems "too thin", but it's actually very high quality synthetic hydraulic oil, with a phenomenal DETERGENT package, and very high heat resistance. Hell, auto trannies "thrash" and compress and heat ATF way worse than any manual trans... These Mazda gearboxes go 250-300,000 miles on ATF all the time! GEAR oil will NOT FLOW into all the tight spaces and bearing races it needs to, and will also not SPLASH UP into the forks/shifter "top end" areas either. Go ATF!

    2:35 this is exactly why I sympathize with Rangers most people don't care for them, abuse them, and beat them till they break. The life of a ranger is a struggle to find an owner to take care of them, and last. It's nice to see someone doing the little things that many don't consider to do because it a ranger.

    Finally, somebody that actually knows that not only do you need to put ATF in these but you have to put Dex/Merc (Mercon 5 compliant as he stated) ATF in there. I made the mistake of putting ordinary ATF in there and it ate my seals and allowed it to empty which caused catastrophic failure eventually. (I should've heard the gears whining sooner!)

    Good video, bud. Thanks for the tip of popping the fill plug first before proceeding.
    Mine is a 93 with a 2.3 with 335k
    Here’s a full tip:
    If you have easy access to it, without having to disassemble too much, you can pull the stick and remove the piece where the shifter connects and pour the fluid straight in there with the fill plug pulled so you know when you’ve got enough. I did it this way when I had to replace that part and it was super easy. Helps though to have someone watching for the fluid to start coming out the fill hole.
    You got a lot of buildup around the back side of that tranny- might want to replace some seals.
    One more thing- there’s three rubber plugs that are pressed into holes on the backside of the riser where the shifter attaches. The rubber gets hard and that’s another common leak point.

    • @MidwestGarage
      @MidwestGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the comment! I think in my scenario and most though it's easier to just put the fluid back in through the fill hole rather than pouring from the top and using a helper to watch the bottom. Definitely the better way if you don't have a fluid pump though!

    A lot of issues with shifting and metal in the transmission is caused from the shifter bushing spring they use it eventually wears out and the shifter gets loose and metal from the spring washers goes down into the transmission, in my ranger when I had the transmission out and when I changed the fluid previously I found pieces of the broken washers in my transmission, I replaced the washers with a bushing kit I got on ebay that was like 12 dollars

    Great demonstration my guy. I have some time off from work so think I might just do this and an oil change. Cheap maintenance is better than no maintenance. Ty brother god bless you.

    thank you, very helpful video, i would not have used ATF! so you saved me there. Yesterday my tranny started to be hard to shift so I'm really hoping changing the fluid helps....really dont want to buy and change out the trans

      Greg Blair how did the fluid help the shifting for you? 1st and 2nd is hard for me.

      Changing the fluid has helped a lot,much to my surprise...it is giving me time to set aside some cash to actually change the clutch

    I thought these older transmissions don't like Mercon V but prefer "original" Mercon; IDK. I'm new to Fords. The lack of torque spec's on the plugs really sucks considering the casing is aluminum as you mentioned. My worthless Haynes manual and practically all the internet don't reveal a torque spec. Also the damn washers... do they require replacement? I just did a trans fluid change on mine and it's now dripping slowly around the drain plug. I torqued to 18 lb-ft because I have used that for another car with an aluminum casing, whose torque spec's--like those of most man'fers--are well published. So do I look for a replacement mystery washer or just blindly keep torquing down the bolt until the drip stops, assuming it ever does, hopefully not to end up striping out the threads. I've had this B3000 for just a year now I got with only 40k mi on it and I have to say it's been mostly a pain in the ass to perform fairly routine maintenance such as this. Sorry for ranting. Anyone have any advice?
