  • Dark Souls 1 has a handful of unused NPCs, and while many of them ended up being finished in the DLC, some were simply consigned to history. Undead King Jar-Eel wasn't fortunate enough to make it into Oolacile, but he's led a surprisingly active life despite it thanks to the modding community. Still, there's a bit of confusion about a few facts relating to him.

Special thanks to Lokey_DS for pointing out the existence of Glorantha's Jar-Eel.
I had seen the theory that "Jar-Eel" was just a mangled version of the word "Jail" repeated even fairly recently, so I ended up digging into it a bit further and Lokey brought up the potential connection to this pre-existing Jar-Eel, which neatly lined up with Miyazaki already having admitted to borrowing ideas from Dragon Pass before. Coupled with the evidence Kingbore had found that the Darkwraith fight was literally just a regular Darkwraith, it seemed like enough to cover for a video.
You might be wondering how the exact spelling of "Jar-Eel" was popularized if the connection to Glorantha's Jar-Eel went unnoticed back when the Undead King was originally discovered, especially when there are numerous ways it could've been translated, such as the "Ja_yearl" seen in his AI label. According to Gibbed, one of the earliest Souls modders, it was evidently just taken from putting the Japanese text from the debug loadlist into Babelfish, so it essentially came down to a stroke of good luck.
I did find a Japanese website discussing Glorantha and the kanji they used for Jar-Eel was identical to the kanji used in the debug loadlist text, which pretty much removes almost any doubt I'd have that it was a deliberate reference. Still, it's a little bit of an odd inspiration if the main connection between them may just by vaguely similar armor, so there might have been some more meaningful narrative link that we'll unfortunately never get to see.

to me it feels clear that the four kings' design was initially meant as his second phase design, and got repurposed later in development after he was cut. it's very classically fromsoft, and in line with stuff like the crawling bed of chaos. the dragon path connection is amazing, though. souls community never stops unearthing stuff

@@23Scadu Yeah, the "Jail" idea always relied on a fairly shaky grasp of Japanese, or a belief that the word was a deliberate corruption of "Jail" to make it into a fantasy name. Either way, it's much more tenuous than the Glorantha Jar-Eel allusion.

Not Kaathe, the serpents are how they're supposed to be, pretty strong references to snakes as powerful beings in many cultures, not only are they primordial but they're possibly tied to the world itself as representations of light and dark, the two serpents are living disparity
He was one of the kings, I honestly think that even with how obscure these games can be, having the Four Kings labeled as "demon" after the name Jar Eel, and with Jar-Eel himself being a king and wearing gold darkwraith armor, he was one of or even THE king of New Londo (the four kings could be the one king using all of his power to manifest different bodies, not that wild in terms of Souls lore) and, even if he cared for his people, had to let New Londo be flooded, maybe even doing it himself, and it's possible this ultimate failing of a leader was what changed him into that Four Kings being, and those under him becoming Darkwraiths, maybe even desperately trying to restore their king's humanity by taking it from others, though it's destined to not work, and people becoming demons through their actions is a theme in souls - usually in futile attempts to save their way of life and people that follow them

Lore hunters will mine every byte of data and misinterpret every line of dialogue looking for a crumb of story. Meanwhile the true lore is an obscure 1963 poem by a guy called Gowry about servants of the insect god sacrificing a girl named Millicent. Sometimes it really do be that simple

Comparing the overall shape of his armor with the 4 kings honestly really seals the deal for me. The extended left pauldron reaching up into the sky, how you can still see the King wearing armor underneath the growths, the fact that they're both labeled "c53*0", and that the King form seems to be a continuation of his normal label but with "demon" added on. Honestly looks like the tree-growths exploded out of his heart, not to mention how the 4 kings had to have been something before what they are now.

Good luck :D Glorantha is incredibly large and detailed as a setting. (I should know, I did illustrations for an actual two volume hardback encyclopaedia.)
There's some clear FromSoft inspiration for sure - for instance Maliketh pulling the Death rune out of himself as a sword is very Glorantha. (where the death god Humakt also wields death as a sword) I wouldn't be surprised if runes themselves were a Glorantha reference, since they're super important for its mythology.

I'm not sure if this is because I'm watching this after playing Shadow of the Erd Tree, but Glorantha's Jar-Eel looks a lot like inspiration for Promised Consort Radahn. The golden armor, the flowing red mane, two curved swords.
And then couple that with the Undead King's curved great sword, tattered cape, and decaying appearance. He looks a lot like inspiration or repurposing for Starscourged Radahn.
Really goes to show that From never lets an idea go to waste.

Thank you for making this video. I wish I'd known this was a mystery - as a Glorantha fan for the last 40 years, and Souls games since Demon's Souls, it was obvious to me where Queelag and Jar-Eel are from. It would have been very quick to solve. In general the feel of the Souls games are very "Gloranthan" in a way that is hard to describe, but relates to the feel of living in an ancient world with deep mythical history that you can interact with, and also how common magic is.
The most Gloranthan of all is Elden Ring. If I told you that in Glorantha, the underlying material of the universe can be formed and shaped by runes, and that one of the greatest things a hero can achieve is their own rune - would this sound familiar? The board game Dragon Pass (originally called White Bear & Red Moon) may have been the first game set in Glorantha, but the most famous is a TTRPG called Runequest. Runes, like Elden Ring's Great Runes, are essential to Glorantha, and the idea of using special runes to "fix" the world in a cycle of destruction and rebirth is extremely Gloranthan in feel. In Glorantha, it is also possible to journey into the underworld and return, although this is a journey for a great hero, and Elden Ring's underworld is believably what parts of the Gloranthan underworld might look like.
Jar-Eel from the DS1 unused content seems to be nothing like Glorantha's Jar-Eel the Razoress, by the way - she is an extremely powerful mystical warrior who is the latest incarnation of the moon goddess Sedenya - one of the key themes of the games set in Glorantha is the war between Sedenya and the Storm God, Orlanth, for rulership of the air and various symbolic roles (they are both gods of change). And Cragspider is a troll combined with spider, but otherwise similar to Queelag, although much more powerful - in Glorantha, the goddess of Time itself is a spider.

  • @Mecceldorf
    @Mecceldorf 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Personally I just assumed he represents a much earlier state in Dark Soul development before they got into the groove per se. Modelers were practicing their work, Miyazaki was fleshing out the world concepts, and maybe somewhere in between him finishing his drafts and the team pinning down their schedule and priorities, someone prepared this warrior design from inspirational influences (Dragon Pass in this case) and early implications of what a New Londo may look like of humans inspired by a grander golden Anor Londo. By the time the Silver Knights and Darkwraiths were a part of the equation he just didn't fit anymore.

the read i get from him is that he might not be connected to the abyss or the four kings at all - and subsequently, that goes for original intent of the ja_yearl_demon, too. he doesn't actually seem much like a darkwraith, after all, and the title of _undead_ king and his unruly appearance gives me the vibe of him being a much smaller scale figure, like the commander of a band of those generic undead soldiers. like, he strikes me as a boss you'd encounter somewhere in the undead burg / parish, or maybe the depths or blighttown, or, hell, maybe even the original boss of the undead asylum. it's not just his appearance, though - it's the resemblance of the ja_yearl_demon and the fact that it's _named_ that way, which makes it seem like something he'd summon or transform into for a second phase. except, it'd be such an extreme transformation that it feels more conceivable and more _interesting_ for it to not be a second phase, but a second _encounter._ one of those situations where an early boss makes another appearance later on, changed but still recognizable either directly by their prior defeat ( i.e. the undead king coming back after death as all undead do, but only after undergoing hollowing so intense that it dramatically changes his appearance into something fitting for a demon lord of emptiness ) or because the loss weighed so heavily upon them that they sought power at any cost ( i.e. the "demon" in the name is completely literal and he used the flame of chaos to become a demon, or alternatively the association with the abyss could've come into play here and it's him after gaining the power of the dark from kaathe or directly from the abyss )
if that's the case, it's not hard to imagine why the dude was ultimately cut. for as fun as that whole trope is ( especially if he _was_ intended as the tutorial boss ), i'm not sure if it fits the ds1 vibe for such an ultimately insignificant dude to get that much pomp and circumstance. _especially_ since his demon is such a cool, striking design while he himself ... really isn't, he's just kinda a gaudy, cluttered, and frankly unappealing mess. it wouldn't surprise me if the four kings were meant to just be lore figures or a very different fight, but then they wanted to do something different with the ja_yearl_demon and figured it'd work _pretty_ well for the kings of the darkwraiths
hell, that could be the reason why the four kings' legs are fucked up in the specific way that they are. if their model had been intended to be used in significantly different circumstances, it'd make sense for it to have more normally proportioned legs that ended in feet, since it'd presumably be used by an enemy that didn't spring from an infinite void of darkness. once the model found its new purpose, though, from decided to work that effect into the design and did some quick 'n dirty edits to pull it off
