I get the instinct to feel sorry for Daisy but the thing is- imagine Daisy was a guy. "Duke", a desperate man tweeked out on drugs, manipulates a woman he knows doesn't want to have sex with him into doing it or he'll expose her & her girlfriend for killing her sister's abusive husband who recently put her in the hospital. "Duke" would be considered a nasty duel antagonist and we'd be cheering for his murder in any other movie. Daisy seems sweet and the actress does a great job making her feel like a poor little meow meow but changing the character's gender doesn't actually make her behavior any less reprehensible than the hypothetical "Duke's" actions.
@@AmandaTheJedi Sorry, I should have mentioned- my comment was jumping off your line in the video about how Daisy doesn't deserve to die for what she did, because I'm 100% sure at least some people who don't feel Daisy deserved to die (not saying specifically you of course) and maybe even some who think she was just a sad victim would have cheered when a male version of Daisy was murdered.
I think the difference is the movie would’ve had a good chance of being narratively portrayed as a lot different if she were a guy. Toxic male figures are almost never portrayed by the narrative as toxic unless they’re family members (and even then that’s not always the case), and any accountability they’re held to is done by the fans, which isn’t the case here. Daisy is openly and objectively portrayed as toxic making it easier to feel sympathy for her and like her as a antagonistic figure, because the narrative is already doing the heavy lifting of ensuring the audience that “yes, we know this girl is very much not okay”. I feel like most people would be more open to male characters like this if they were ALSO portrayed as such, but they often aren’t, and are instead treated by the narrative as misunderstood and “just doing what they have to for love”. It’s like the difference in reception to Jared Leto’s Joker and…pretty much every other standard fare Joker.
I don't think it needs to be either/or. Daisy is clearly a broken creature crafted by her environment & kind of a sleazy manipulator. I feel bad for her and also think she what she did is awful.
Me and my partner (both lesbians) saw this on opening night at our local big AMC theater, most seats were empty but out of the people there, most were men. The whole time my partner and i were laughing, gasping, just reacting to how wild it was, but we were literally the only two people making any noise. And old man by himself in the row in front of us walked out about 1/3 the way through. We loved the movie but the theater experience kinda sucked. Then a week later, our local small independent movie theater was showing it, and we went to their opening night. But this was very different, the small theater was packed, almost all queer women older than 30 (they planned a big meetup on facebook apparently). Waaaaaaay better of an experience, everyone was reacting out loud the whole time, older women felt comfortable to cuddle up with each other, we were all complimentimg eachothers outfits and hair before and after the movie, it was just incredible. And it made the movie so much more important to me than just what is in the film, but how it brought out the lesbian community in my city that i rarely see, and brought us all together to watch this. As a butch myself its so incredible when i get to see and meet older butches, i get to see my future when normally we are kept from eachother. I feel so lucky to be able to experience being in that room, it meant more to me than any pride event or gay man centered bar ever could. Im so grateful that this movie was made, we need more movies like this to bring the lesbian community together. Also love lies bleeding reminded me so much of the movie Bound, but like a gritty version. If you havent seen that movie i highly recommend it.
+1 for Bound. It's the Wachowskis' first ever movie, made long before either of them were publicly out as trans, and I think it's interesting to examine it through that lens.

me and my friend went to see this a couple weeks ago and at the awkward dinner, even though i couldn't see the marks with my not amazing eyes, I was like "oh god he abuses her" because you could FEEL Jen almost starting to hold her breath and freeze when he started getting mad and my friend was like "what? no, he's just weird" and then the literal next scene was Jen in the hospital and she was like "oh you were right"
She was awesome. I was hoping she would play Abby in the next season of The Last of Us. She is a jacked female character but it looks like they picked someone normal sized 🙄
I love that you brought up the magical realism aspect. I could see some people getting turned off by that. But having been a fan of Saint Maud, I think Glass really expanded on those aspects of subjectivity and the line between reality and the perception of it.
Yeah I wish I liked it but I didn’t. I think Saint Maud was different tbh, maybe it’s my personal bias expecting wacky stuff like that from what was described to me as mor horror-adjacent kinda thriller than this? I had no idea this movie was gonna be campy at all, everything I’ve seen made it seem like it was going to be played totally serious like Bound or something. I’m not a huge fan of camp in general but I can enjoy it (I loved Bodies Bodies Bodies, but didn’t like Bottoms), but I’m more likely to have a problem with it if I didn’t know about it. I like don’t like being caught off guard by camp because I go into a movie taking it seriously unless proven otherwise, if it was not clear before I watched it. I really really really really wished I like it. I’m disappointed but more so in myself than the film. It’s very difficult for me to find a sapphic film I genuinely really enjoy and as a sapphic is depressing. Especially when I hear other sapphics talk about how much love XYZ iconic film, I feel like something’s wrong with me or something.
My interpretation of the father not wanting to off the abuser is that he make him too much money to get rid of which is more important to him than his daughter
If I recall correctly, I think the FBI mentions he was an informant, too. And it's possible he didn't want him dead to avoid drawing suspicion. Which also plays into his selfish desires instead of protecting his family
I shed a single tear at the end because neither of the girls died. It was such a dopamine hit I love this movie so much. This year has had the best sapphic movies between this and Drive Away Dolls, we definitely need more sapphic cinema!!! 💖
I think the use of the word "monster" was maybe a reference to the Aileen Wuornos movie called Monster which is about a lesbian couple, specifically Aileen Wuornos, who's a serial killer.
I'm really enjoying seeing Katy O'Brian pop up in things. She has such a striking look and an evolving talent that I'm curious to see what her career becomes as she pops up in more films where she continues to grow.
Might be a stretch but when Daisy answers the phone in place of Lou and turns Jackie away while she needs help it TOTALLY reminded me of Jacob answering Edward's call and not passing the phone to Bella !
I really liked this film. It was me and two other people in the whole theater I saw it as a matinee though so hopefully it got decent box office numbers cuz it would be cool to see more films like this get green lit.
A friend of mine went to see this and when I asked her what she thought she told me she had no way of describing it. She liked it! But couldn't describe it. I was looking forward to your review to hear about this strange film. It did not disappoint 😂
I need that Crater Gym muscle tee in my wardrobe stat. It took me a couple days to stop picturing Dave Franco's jaw. I was on the edge of my seat and it took so many crazy turns, l loved it.
I remember the guy I went to see this movie with cackling with me when at the first sapphic scene a scandalized couple walked out immediately hemming and hawing at the unapologetic gay after having not batted a lash at the scene with Jackie and JJ in the car
Gotta love how cheating and beating on your wife is apparently less offensive to those people than two women consensually getting it on. Our society is doomed.
I was a little disappointed that they never went deeper into Jackie's past - I thought the phone call where she gets called a monster was setting something up, maybe some kind of parallel to Lou but it pretty much never came up again after which felt kinda weird
I really enjoyed this movie. I thought it was a great examination of how abuse often perpetuates itself, particularly when personal and societal structures reinforce the acceptability of said violence. Society itself is harming them too. It is similar to the recent- albeit incredibly different to the source material- adaptation of Interview With the Vampire in some ways.
I really love this movie. I had a fun time watching it in a mostly empty theater with my friend. But, I do find it funny that I possibly never would’ve watched this if it wasn’t for me sending the trailer to my friend and saying that despite never hearing about it, one scene completely sold me on the movie and her joking about taking me so she could laugh at me gay panicking over the main actors.
Amanda has become a perfect oasis for those movies I'm either mildly curious about but not enough to watch it in full (Five Nights At Freddy's) or extremely interested in but scared to watch because of the heavy stuff that'll mess with me (this).
this movie does such a good fucking job at building tension. i ordered a large popcorn for my friend and i to share but he barely touched it bc he was SO sucked into the film and i was immediately too i just think i was stress eating LMFAO
Saw this last night and the mixture of emotions I went through!!! I'm still processing and this video was such a great breakdown! I thought they had both died when the slow motion running began almost like they has been set free to live their lives in 'heaven' also felt there was a lot of Twilight references! The use of the red on the cola vending machine blew my mind! Great spot. Tempted to catch the last showing!
the only thing i thought about leaving antman 3 was the hot warrior lady and it was such a niche win to see her in a lesbian movie with kristen stewart
I would love to hear your take on Blue is the Warmest Color. I love that film and I know it is old but I would love to hear about it from your perspective and learn about the film making spects that you always cover.
I just wanna point out that the red not only symbolizes the similarities between Lou and her dad, but that its also just the entire theme of the movie. I think every single "thing" (such as love and hate) that is connected to the colour red has been used in this movie and its amazing
Amanda, you are AMAZING. So many thoughts on this review. The second i saw Gullivers Travels, I knew it would come back, but i didnt thinknabout it again till you brought it up!
knew this movie was a Must See and went with my best friend. i left saying “cinema is BACK”. what a thrill ride! it’s definitely one of my top movies of the year so far (maybe ever!). so glad to see you cover it!
I think what you referring as your favorite reaction of the movie on 16:40 is Lou’s reaction to Jackie not hesitated to shoot her as well. I think she was shocked but she never thought Jackie would hurt her so she is very surprised she pointed the gun at her too! Just my interpretation:)
To add to the similarities between Lou and her dad, I found it interesting that she was 1) named after him (at least the captions had his name as Lou, Sr.) and 2) the way she told Jackie “sit tight and let me take care of it.” ..just like her dad on the phone call.
The dad didn’t do anything to stop his daughter being abused I think because he already “lost” both Lou and her mom from being overbearing it seems. That hospital scene made me think that he was scared to lose contact with the last person in his family who still loves him
I waited to watch this video until after I watched the movie. I love it, especially the Lou/Jackie scenes. Their love feels so genuine & adorable. I agree with most of your views/theories.
Cat being Alive by the end genuinely did shock me And I am glad about the semi foreshadowing in gullions travels clip because I was so confused as to why that was there
I interpreted Lou Sr. not killing JJ because he knew he was an informant, and he knew the FBI was sniffing around so his death would trigger alarms. He was doing damage control for himself, not giving a crap that Beth was getting beat half to death.
I can finally watch this video. I have been waiting for the movie to hit theaters where I live. I went in kind of blind, so the shot of JJ with half his jaw off was a slight jump scare for me xD
I loved this movie. I don't think I'm exactly the target demographic, but I so drawn in to their relationship and everything they are facing together. I was kind of thrown by the magical realism at the end, so I watched the movie again with my wife, because I could tell it was just going over my head. She got it immediately, and now it seems really obvious. Brilliant work on so many levels.
Amanda this is my reason to leave the bar and go home cuz I now I have content worth watching . Thankyou and happy Sunday Funday - I'm expecting you to talk about the massive tonal shift in the last ten minutes that I'm positive is a homage to Lou Ferigno as the Hulk - please don't let me down Amanda ok.
Amanda. I need you to do me a solid. One of the most viscerally disturbing gorror movies I've ever seen is criminally underrated and no one really talks about it online. If you need a video idea please cover Proxy from 2013. It's completely insane. I've watched a lot of horror movies but this one literally made me have to pause and catch my breath at like the 4 minute mark and then the plot twists from there were just insane. The pacing was wild and just... ugh.
Great review, great film. As a movie nerd was seeing lots of movie references (jj dies similarly to the guy in lost highway, among others mentioned in the video & comments) About the sex, i liked the way it was shown in dichotomy - as both a means and an end, with both positive & negative motivations around it. I loved the ending & watching the emotional roller coaster of the last 10 minutes or so in a theater was really moving. Also I'm trying to quit cigarettes, and sometimes it really does feel like the world wants you to keep smoking.
It was weird in parts and cool, definitely didn't expect some of the places it went. I was jazzed for Katy and the movie delivered a really interesting role for her.
Honestly, haven't seen the movie yet- i do like breakdowns to see if it's something im interested in for when it's streaming, but the DV dynamic between Beth and JJ is sadly relatable. Also, cops typically do not deal with anything like this until there are huge amount of documentations- reports, pictures, etc. At least in my area.
Not going to lie, I wasn’t a huge fan of her being huge at the end (I know it’s not meant to be literal but I thought it initially felt out of place) I completely missed the subtle foreshadowing of it happening, now I appreciate it and the film as a whole even more! Thank you Amanda!
This was definitely on my "to watch" list since seeing a trailer. Stewart really shines in these performances, unlike in real life 😐😌 Thanks for another great video, Amanda. ❤

Family body burrito business is booming.
Movies like this and Spencer prove why Kristen Stewart shouldn't just be written off as a "one-note" all because of Twilight.
I remember the guy I went to see this movie with cackling with me when at the first sapphic scene a scandalized couple walked out immediately hemming and hawing at the unapologetic gay after having not batted a lash at the scene with Jackie and JJ in the car
yup and those types of people want to call US snowflakes
Gotta love how cheating and beating on your wife is apparently less offensive to those people than two women consensually getting it on. Our society is doomed.
This movie is awesome! O’Brian deserves some Oscar consideration for her performance & her body transformation.
At the screening I went to, when Lou says, "There is absolutely nothing wrong with you," the whole room just laughed hard.
I finally found a film where “Love” is depicted so accurately. Fantastic video
The Bella Swan girl is iconic
Learning that Ed chose his skullet makes me love the movie all that much more!
Ever since I saw the trailer and watch the movie I have been WAITING for your video on it Amanda! Thank you for feeding us
this movie does such a good fucking job at building tension. i ordered a large popcorn for my friend and i to share but he barely touched it bc he was SO sucked into the film and i was immediately too i just think i was stress eating LMFAO
Idk why but the subtle difference of a rolled up sleeve is so darn hot
Thanks for posting this video Amanda the Jetski!
Was waiting for you to do a vid about this
FINALLY FINALLY FINALLYYYYY!!! I saw it release day and was SHOCKED she didnt already have a full video on it!
This movie completely changed the trajectory of my life
the only thing i thought about leaving antman 3 was the hot warrior lady and it was such a niche win to see her in a lesbian movie with kristen stewart
yep she was also in andor and was great there
Kristen Stewart is so good at looking shocked and in pain... basically just traumatized. I'm happy she's found her thing.
I love your commentary!
Hi Amanda, lots of love from Brazil 🇧🇷 ❤️
I laughed so hard after Lou said ‘LOVE YOU SIS!’ After intimidating her sister lol
I would love to hear your take on Blue is the Warmest Color. I love that film and I know it is old but I would love to hear about it from your perspective and learn about the film making spects that you always cover.
Seen it twice, loved it..
Ah, I love a reminder of my gay awakening, Amanda covering a Kristen Stewart movie.
So turns out, Dave Franco was not our guy... buddy.
But when she said that Franco was like a South Park Canadian..... choice comedy 😂😂
I get that reference!
Hahaha. Brutal!
He wasn't our guy, friend
The milk comment then immediate apology KILLED me 😂😂
favorite thing is watching a movie and then immediately watching an amanda the jedi video about the movie
Just my interpretation:)
they made this film just for you to review
Daisy 100% let Lou wash her hands before putting the moves on her lol
My favorite movie of the year. Good review.
That hospital scene made me think that he was scared to lose contact with the last person in his family who still loves him
You are an awesome film critic.👍
I was just rewatching some of Amanda’s videos, this is a nice treat
I wish you get more subscribers because you are really fun to watch and listen to.
Might be my favorite film I've seen all year
I waited to watch this video until after I watched the movie. I love it, especially the Lou/Jackie scenes. Their love feels so genuine & adorable. I agree with most of your views/theories.
@4:44 I will come back for spoilers after watching it
pirate it on soap2day
Cat being Alive by the end genuinely did shock me
And I am glad about the semi foreshadowing in gullions travels clip because I was so confused as to why that was there
Alive and thriving
Yesss I loved the coke machine flashing the red light too!!
The pacing was wild and just... ugh.
She took that last smoke because Dasiy said keep it, you'll need it later 😅
Great review, great film. As a movie nerd was seeing lots of movie references (jj dies similarly to the guy in lost highway, among others mentioned in the video & comments)
About the sex, i liked the way it was shown in dichotomy - as both a means and an end, with both positive & negative motivations around it.
3:05 I JUST WANNA LIVE ONE DAY TO HEAR KRISTEN TELL ME to ✨shut the fuck up ✨
Manic pixie muscle mommy 😂❤
Lou’s reaction to JJ’s body had me cracking up.
Especially without a complaining party, as in the victim.
23:43 You leave my poor little meow meow alone /hj
Happy almost birthday!!
Stewart really shines in these performances, unlike in real life 😐😌
Thanks for another great video, Amanda. ❤
Damn! This video with a roller coaster ride! Ijust have to see the movie!
