As a musician (I'm glad you mentioned that), I have to keep a TON of black in my wardrobe. And you're right, I go through black shirts very quickly as they show wear very easily. I think the point about patterns and textures is a good tip. When possible, I try to take advantage of a nice contrast in textures, maybe some dark charcoal pants or a pair of grey suede shoes (again, when it is "allowed" and appropriate) to have some variety and break up the monotony. I also think rolling up your shirt sleeves is a good way to limit the "black hole" effect. Great video!!

I bought a black, French cuffed dress shirt years ago before I really knew what I was doing stylewise. I don't wear it very often, but I just can't bring myself to lose it. I'll tend to wear it with khaki trousers, a black leather belt, and square silver cuff links. I used to wear it with a charcoal grey suit.

Many years ago I played in a Western swing band and we chose black shirts with the French cuff and cutaway collar similar to what Elvis wore when he was photographed in Germany during his stint in the army, we had a white shirt too in the same cut but the black was the favourite, each of us had a white silk Western scarf similar to an Ascot I suppose for us older members of the band worn at the collar and tied like a regular tie however our youngest player always wore his collar open and tied directly to his neck in the manner of lots of the country stars of the 40's and 50's, my wife sourced a pair of vintage confetti lucite cufflinks to finish this off, while all this probably isn't very gentlemanly we did feel good on stage 😀

So I'm just now entering in to this part myself. I find myself getting lost with so much information and to be honest it can be overwhelming. I'm still learning all of the jacket types and color pairings as well as patterns. It seems as if everything I was taught when I was younger was wrong. I'm glad I found this channel and it provides the information necessary for one to learn and process in a non condescending manner.

I actually saw a look book the other day with a guy wearing a black shirt under a brown tweed suit with black leather boots. It looked amazing. The colors did not compliment each other at all. They actually clashed because of how different they were. But something about how it was put together just made it perfect. I’m too lazy to go find it and see what brand it was.

Looking at old black & white pictures from the 1930s, 40s, 50s etc you often see men in dark coloured shirts, but it seems like they were often navy blue or dark grey. See Marlon Brando in Guys & Dolls - he wore dark navy (or midnight blue) and dark grey shirts with suits. I'm not saying people didn't wear black, just that, as with two-tone shoes, I think black & white photographs make us think black was more common than it was. We imagine gangsters in black & white shoes, but we won't see dark brown & cream for instance in b&w pictures

Good information regarding the use of black shirts. I wear kilts with both an Argyll jacket with waistcoat and a Prince Charlie jacket with waistcoat. I have worn a black shirt before with both jacket styles. I have also worn a black wing collar shirt with a placated covering over the buttons. But since some of my kilts have brighter colors in them, I tend to chose a bow or standard tie that compliments a color in my kilt. The offset colors really pops on a black shirt.

Black is so pervasive today (so is navy blue for that matter), but it just soaks up so much heat: here in South Texas, it is very hot for so much of the year, & this summer has been particularity hot thus far. And I see so much black and other dark colors worn anyway 🤷‍♂️

Where I live it's too hot for a waistcoat or coat. The dress shirt largely takes the outerwear role except in very, very formal occasions.
The black shirt works well as dailywear in that context, and can be jazzed-up with choice of tie, belt, and any other accoutrements.

In re: black flattering a variety of skin tones
Yes but the reason it doesn’t always work for people is because there are warmer (ie. red based) black and cooler (ie. blue based) black; if they get the wrong one, it can easily wash them out. I’m also glad you brought up the issues of high contrast, texture, etc. - this really can make or break a look. Thanks for another great video!

I recommend everyone look into Color Analysis. When you figure out which seasonal color palette you will gain so much understanding on what looks good on you. Personally I’m a “Deep Winter” so Black is my go to color! Winter’s can get away with wearing a full black outfit as long as it’s broken up with different textures/materials/cool toned jewelry or a little bit of contrast. It’s all about skin undertones, your hair color, eye colors and the relationship they all have with each other aesthetically. Hope this helps!

Yes, one should definitely wear a black shirt if (1) the shirt has a nice sheen to it, (2) the black shirt is punctuated by complimentary designs, such as stripes or a nice logo (e.g., Lacoste, Fred Perry).
One of the outfits I get the most compliments on is when I pair a solid black linen shirt from Island Importer* with khaki pants/shorts and a Panama hat. The linen shirt has the aforementioned sheen, and the whole outfit (I'm told) exudes strength and masculine confidence.

How about wearing a black shirt like a very informal/casual jacket? I think that if you wear it open over a tight white T-shirt, paired with jeans, you can get a bit of a bad-boy look, giving associations to a leather jacket, like you see in in Grease or the bomber jacket you see in Top Gun, without it looking too retro. I know that that is not classic menswear, but I think it can work, if you are aiming for something a bit more modern.

I had a firm belief that while at work wearing black was a no no for me, the family and friends of the deceased are grieving, not myself, I was there to try and make an extremely difficult and tiresome process easier so they're able to grieve naturally, the bereaved wear black to symbolize their grief. But my boss disagreed...old school, which is fine. Alright, you sell me with that one. Put me in the Helltaker sequel because I'm about to do some evil.

Not sure I agree with the advice against wearing a tie with a black dress shirt. At the very least, I think a white tie with a black dress shirt is a very sharp look. Basically, the inverse of the classic, formal white dress shirt and black tie/coat look. There's something very "Sin City" about the white on black look which I love.

I think if you had to wear one it's best to go for a wedding tie or similar, with shades of silver or grey. But paring that with a jacket is a challenge, so skipping the jacket in that case is best.

Nice video but stains will show on any shirt. White, blue, pink, you name it. Black does do a better job at hiding stains than white, even Doctors 200 years ago wore black suits.

You are just way off on this one... I have several exquisite black dress shirts that look amazing in a formal black tie setting... And they look just spectacular with a well chosen tie as well whether it be with Jeans, Dark to White Khakis, or Dress Slacks... This is one where your sense of style for yourself might be adverse to a black dress shirt in these fashion situations... But I've ROCKED it in these outfits and looked amazing. I do appreciate all the effort you gents put into your vids though. Thank you Kindly.

As someone who overheats (and sweats) easily and am outdoors most of the day, black shirts are just too hot if it's sunny outside.

When i started wearing suits and ties as a teen i loaded up on colored shirts and black shirts...now even with variety i end up almost always with a light blue or white shirt.

How about a breakdown of Saul Goodman looks? What works and what doesn't. Some of his most garish combinations somehow kind of work!
