For your “double boiler” with the tea pot, I always put canning rings in the pot vs the tin foil. It keeps it steadier and will avoid a tipped tea pot filled with candle wax. Great idea with the paper muffin cups and pine shavings. We always saved tp rolls, cut them in half and added dryer lint. We poured the wax over them then.
Last summer, I got a percolating coffee pot at a yard sale to use for camping, but it didn’t have the coffee pot insert! Now instead of buying an insert, I’m going to use that for wax, thanks to all the great inspiration here!
Hi Becky and Susan! I just love the "Becky and Susan" Show! You make a great team--there is nothing more warm and beautiful than watching mother and daughter! Hugs and blessings.
I agree Cassy! I’ve been binge watching this channel ever since I found it. I can’t get enough of Becky and her whole family. . She is an awesome person. I thoroughly enjoy this channel. 🌺
Same!! My favorite part about Becky’s videos are…every minute? 😂 But seriously, (lol) I love how she puts multiple days into the same video! So when it’s the end of her day, normally I think, ok, that’s the end, and then she pops back on for the next day! And again a few minutes later. It’s like the video that you don’t want to end, and then it doesn’t! It’s so great.:) I always feel like it’s my lucky day, but then I remember that this is Becky, and she is just that amazing, which is why her channel is my absolute favorite of all.👍▶️👑
I keep saying I have too many Susans in my life--sister, friends' sisters, co-workers, church family. But, I am delighted to know your Mom, too, from your fun videos. Do not quit making your solo videos, but do not hesitate to "spark" some videos with your mom, sister, Dad, husband--anyone!! Thanks for the enjoyable information!!
retired candle maker here. the wax will melt MUCH faster if its broken up in chunks. freeze the old candles first. then take out your agression on them with a hammer (garage or patio floor would be best). if making large batches, we used an electric roaster with a water pan. it would keep our large batch of wax at temp while we made our various scented candles.
Paraffin wax is made from petroleum (yes, the same petroleum used to make oil and gas). It is the sludge remaining after fuels are removed. Then they use chemicals to make into wax. It contains toxins and carcinogens. Soy wax is cleaner and a longer burn. I would try that as a firestarter.
I had to call my husband in, he's a camper and a prepper!!!!!! He immediately said he's got to make some of those fire starters!!!!!!!! I knew he would!!!!!!!! Thank you for the awesome tutorial!
Hi Becky. 👋 I love your mum and I love the interaction you have going with her on cooking/craft days like this. Please keep these videos coming💖‼️ They are so enjoyable to watch. Thank you for a lovely visit into your kitchen. I am 67 and very good at finding bargains. I have learned so much from you. I was blue today because I lost my mom 18 years ago today. It warmed my heart to see both of you together just like my momma and me. I am making these fire starters asap.
i'm a little confused on the statement about commercial starters having a petroleum product in it so you wouldn't use them. but these would feel comfortable cooking with. those candles are made with petroleum based wax. parrafin wax is petroleum. soy and beeswax would be a better choice, i believe.
Gee, I didn’t know paraffin was made with petroleum. I do know that the commercial fire starter we have bought before smell like burning oil or tires. Not the kind of smoke I want getting on food. The unscented wax and paraffin doesn’t smell at all so I assumed it was same. Susan, Becky’s Mom.
@@susanjones3177 i was a candle maker for many years, so i'm familiar with it. paraffin is a by product of the petroleum process used in making fuel. the commercial ones you mention may have been made with a lower quality wax or some other additives were used. next time y'all get ready to make these, hunt down some beeswax. tht would smelll wonderful burning! if you have a local bee farm they might even sell unrefined to you super cheap since it still has dead bees/parts and honeycomb in it. and since you'd be using it for this purpose, there would be no reason to need to clean it first. thanks for responding susan. i think you are as much of a natural on the videos as becky is!!

The pine cones are my favorite to make! I got some of the small crock pots from the consignment store and melt my wax in there. I also use my kids old broken crayons to color them. My daughter is in girl scouts and her troop is going on a camping trip after cookie season and these would be perfect for the girls to make! Thank you for sharing! I love watching all of your videos!
We used to save up dryer lint and toilet paper rolls, cut them in half and stuff the rolls with the lint for fire starters when i was in girl scouts :)
I was a Brownie and Girl Guide as a young girl and a leader as an adult. I still make and use fire starters to this day. Back in the day we used the cardboard egg cartons as you are using. We would get sawdust from wood worker friends or lumber supply stores that cut to order. If you don’t have access to wood chips or sawdust you can use other things. We would use dryer lint (we don’t use dryer sheets so our lint is ok to use), shredded cardboard, shredded paper, etc. As well we often collected pine ones and dunked them in the wax and let them dry. You can also roll newspaper into a solid roll and tightly tie it. Soak it thoroughly in water and leave it to dry, Burn these whole or cut into 3” pieces. You can drizzle wax in the ends. (Soaking the newspaper and allowing it to dry helps them burn much longer.) Love your channel Becky! Even in my 60’s I am learning new tricks! 🙂
I love your mom. I also have adult children. She is teaching you the things I teach my children and grandchildren. Keep having her on the channel. BTW, love Goodwill.
Becky as a girl scout volunteer, we collect toilet paper rolls and dryer lint to use as well as egg cartons, candles and saw dust. We make them at home also and use the side burner on our grill so the mess is outside.
@@Z0MBiiK1TTY not if you don’t use any kind of dryer sheets it’s not. I can’t stand dryer sheets (basically poison) and haven’t used them for years (or any kind of fabric softener for that matter). Most of my clothing is also cotton so I know my dryer lint is not toxic, in fact I put it in my worm composting bin with no problem. I highly recommend people stop using any kind of dryer sheets they are just absolute poison and not needed. The smell of clean and fresh is “no smell“ 👍
I use tumble dryer fluff too. We only have natural fibre clothes, so it's just like charcloth (waaaaay back before matches, a flint & steel were used to make the spark, but you needed something to "catch" the spark - charcloth. They made charcloth by burning scrap cloth in a very low oxygen environment, same technique as making charcoal. You can do this yourself with one of those tins car sweets / mints come in, poke a few tiny air holes with an awl / punch, stuff with natural fibre cloth, light it & carefully cram the lid on - it doesn't burn super fast, it's less dodgy than it sounds. Leave on a heatproof surface until the following day- fire will have burned out & tin cooled down. Voila - charcloth! But dryer fluff is less messy & using something you'd otherwise waste!)
@@wickedwinnie I agree. I'm not sure about them being poisonous so I won't comment on that. I just don't like to itch. I use free and clear everything.
I made a Firestarter basket for my daughter for Christmas. Included kindling twigs, pinecones, birch bark from the woods, and two small starter logs. With a buffalo plaid ribbon it was adorable. She loved it. Next time I will include a whole bunch of these as well! Great video idea!
I've also made firestarters with egg cartons and wax! I ripped strips out of the lid on the carton, and made the firestarters look like roses. Supercute!
YOUR MOTHER IS AWESOME!!! Seriously she's such a nice lady and I love how she tells you what she's done "wrong" in the past like the wood chips getting caught in her rug!! Love it. You definitely get your teaching style from your mom because you are also detailed about process' and why you do things the way you do.
I enjoy watching you and your Mom doing all kinds of things together. I spent every minute I could with my Mom when she was alive. Talked to her at least once a day. Cherish every minute! (Dad too)
My husband has been making these for a few years now. They work great. I had a random box of paper bathroom sized Dixie cups that he used and he has also used the paper egg cartons, too, like you two did. For the wood shavings, he saves wood chips from untreated wood (from the chopsaw or chainsaw) and we also save dryer lint and mix it in as well. Great way to repurpose random scrap items! He has a station in the barn where he assembles them using a single electric burner. Another great video!
I don’t even know why I watched this since I’ll likely never make or need these, but I absolutely LOVE your mom’s explanations of her trial & error learning! It’s so helpful to know WHY certain things didn’t work or weren’t a good idea, rather than simply “do this!”
I love videos with your mom. She is such an excellent teacher. You can tell she knows what she is demonstrating and really wants you to succeed by giving us all the tips and tricks she has learned over time! Thank you and keep these collabs a comin’!
This is a great idea! If you want a fire starter with less mess, you can take the cardboard from an empty toilet paper roll or paper towel roll and stuff it with your dryer lint. Dryer lint is flammable and this works every time.
I am SO going to do this! Thank you for all of your money saving or just homemade ideas. After winning my battle against cancer, I have been changing so much about what I eat and things I use. I want a much healthier lifestyle.
Watching you and your mom together warms my heart! Your parents are so precious! I lost my dad when I was 14, was an only child, and lost my mom when I was 43. Cherish your time together! I enjoy it vicariously through you. 🥰

Your mom is such a natural giving instructions on camera (maybe this is who you learned it from!). It's really fun to watch the two of you cook up stuff in the kitchen.
Great idea 👌 I have also just started to make fire starters just with cardboard tore up into little pieces and pulped up With a paint stirrer rod or whipper snipper with water in a tub, roll it into mini logs squeeze it out while rolling it let it dry for about a week And hey presto cardboard logs that burn for ages and a great way to use up left over cardboard we have about 40 so far we make a few a day it's nearly autumn in Australia so getting ready for winter ❄️
Hello! Sarah from Ohio here! I just spent the past several months watching all your videos from the beginning and I am all caught up! I have so enjoyed watching and have learned a TON from you!!! Thank you, thank you!!! Your content is fantastic!!! What a great video on how to make fire starters. It is so helpful when your mom went through things she has tried, different equipment and what she does now. Can’t wait to make some fire starters!
No need for a sacrifice, you can ressurect the vessel used for melting wax. Pour boiling hot water in it, all the way to the top, leave it to cool slowly for several hours. Residues of wax will melt and form a disk on top of the water and your vessel will be free of wax.
Omg she is so detailed. I love it. So apparently when you madenyour vudei where your Dad brought you firestarters i was like what kind of christmas sweet is this....im glad your making this video.
We use saw dust instead of buying wood chips and used candles from the thrift stores and I made little cups out of old news paper wrapped around a 2" can bottom. This makes them almost free to make.
I've made these with just recycled candles and egg cartons, ( works great) ...but its much better adding the wood chips to stretch the wax futher. You can also use pine cones, or dryer lint, and i would think that just some crumpled up, or shredded paper would also do the trick. Anything non toxic and burnable...and for the cups, you can also use those tiny bathroom paper cups, instead of throwing them in the trash, recycle them for firestarters. There's probably other materials that can be used for filler or the cups too. Think outside the box, lol A friend introduced me to these firestarters when i was using a wood stove for heat and it felt like a miracle!!! I no longer have a wood stove but still remembering that wonderful miracle!!!! (thanks Hank!!!) Thanks for sharing these, sweet ladies...i know EVERYONE is gonna love these lil miracles!!! They make firestarting in your woodstove, fireplace, or campfire as simple as just lighting a match!!! 🍃🤗🍃
My husband made about 100 of these from your video and he is so pleased with them! We found the muffin size was too big so he cuts them in half. But we plan to make a whole lot of these to tide us over winter! Thanks 😊
We have a wood furnace and we do a firepit for fun in the summer. I make fire starters a bit different. I take an empty toilet paper holder and pack it full of dryer lint and wrap it with paper (I use the brown paper they use to stuff the boxes I get from online orders or newspaper) They end up looking like a Tootie Roll. Nothing yucky and a great way to recycle all this stuff.
My husband makes firestarters with the cardboard tubes from toilet paper rolls or paper towels tubes cut in half. He stuffs them with paper from a paper shredder then he dips that in wax and rolls them around in the wax. He uses an old roaster pan to melt the wax on the grill outside and once the rolls are saturated he drys them on a rack. I love your idea too!
The wood shavings are a great idea! When I was in Girl Scouts in the late 80's, early 90's, we lined old egg cartons with lint from the dryer then poured wax over it. They worked great and my dad still request them for his fireplace every year. The shavings probably smell much better than the lint I've been using. lol
I always make my fire starters at the campground. Don't have to worry about wood shavings getting all over the house, and I just use a foil mini-loaf pan to melt the wax on the grate in the fire pit while it's burning.. use tongs to pick it up! Love the idea to just use hamster/chicken bedding... I had gone to the trouble of hunting down cedar chips because someone told me I had to... and those aren't just available everywhere.
Hint for removing wax from clothing or carpets. Place a piece of brown paper bag over the spot, then place a piece of cotton material, like a handkerchief. Plug & turn your iron on med to high & iron pressing down & taking your time. The heat will melt the wax & it will adhere to the paper bag. 🙋♀️💜
I've been making the egg carton fire starters for 40 years and loved them for all our camping trips. However, I really like the idea of the muffin papers for gifts or just being pretty by the fireplace. Awesome idea. Thanks.

It is so helpful when your mom went through things she has tried, different equipment and what she does now. Can’t wait to make some fire starters!
Hello Sarah
What a great idea! Now I'll never pass up old candles at a garage sale again! lol
I made this a few weeks ago. My husband and I lit one to see how long it would burn ... 21 minutes!!!! It was awesome!!
Think outside the box, lol
A friend introduced me to these firestarters when i was using a wood stove for heat and it felt like a miracle!!! I no longer have a wood stove but still remembering that wonderful miracle!!!! (thanks Hank!!!)
Thanks for sharing these, sweet ladies...i know EVERYONE is gonna love these lil miracles!!! They make firestarting in your woodstove, fireplace, or campfire as simple as just lighting a match!!!
🍃🤗🍃
What a great gift to add to a housewarming basket🔥good to see you Susan☺️
My husband made about 100 of these from your video and he is so pleased with them! We found the muffin size was too big so he cuts them in half. But we plan to make a whole lot of these to tide us over winter! Thanks 😊
Note: Most candles, unless stated otherwise, that they are made of beeswax or soy, then they are petroleum based. So check your candles.
good point!
I love you mom's glasses!
I just love your mom .. hi 👋
Fantastic and inspiring as always
Your Mom is just too cute!😁💖
Awww so sweet. Thanks, Becky's Mom! 🔥❣️
I've been making the egg carton fire starters for 40 years and loved them for all our camping trips. However, I really like the idea of the muffin papers for gifts or just being pretty by the fireplace. Awesome idea. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing!
I love your momma! I love how close you are:) 🥰
