I’ve watched all the different videos you have on the gel stain brush techniques. I finally bought everything and it turned out fantastic. Took multiple coats to get a darker finish, but it turned out amazing. Wish we could post pictures here of the finished products that you inspired us to create!❤
You were the very 1st furniture refinisher I started watching, and then following. I love all the content you put out. I hope you never stop putting content up on TH-cam. I knew from one of your other videos that you lived in Georgia & so do I, but when you said during this video that you’re from Indiana, I was like, WHAT! Me too! I’m originally from Indianapolis. I moved to Georgia in 2002. I’ve lived in Rome twice & in Newnan. Newnan was my fave but I have grandchildren now & I didn’t when I left, so I moved back so I could be closer to them. Thanks for doing the masterclass. I’ve always wanted to know how to do this finish.
That’s so cool! 🫶 and my grandmothers name was Sharon so now we have that too!
Oh my gosh! That’s cool. Love that. What part of Georgia do you live in
I’m getting ready to do a beautiful round that and chairs with the pottery barn finish. Would you suggest doing the chairs in the same or maybe doing them in black
I think the black makes them pop instead of just blending
Thanks for this!
I use both polycrylic and the oil modified version and love them both. I choose between them based on whether I’m willing to have the slightly warmer effect the oil modified gives. I apply both with a foam brush and I haven’t noticed a difference in how easily they wash out.
Beautifully done, as always!!! You’re work is fantastic!
Beautiful! Thank you for all of the helpful hints and tools! Always love your content! I hope you can continue with it!
Thank you for this content!! I am using it to refinish a bed-frame and am about to start dry brushing. You are my teacher ❤️
Love hearing that! 🖤
This has been a great series. I love how this turned out. And the black chairs look so good with it.
This is beautiful! Think I’ll start on a tiny stool or something very small first. It looks like a LOT of work. 😄 Well done you. Best faux wood finish I’ve seen. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🇮🇪
Nice job with this table! So pretty.
I am loving all your videos. Attempting my first piece as i type! I appreciate all your tips!
I am doing a table now. Perfect timing. I love doing this finish!
My father was a car painter and when I washed his freshly painted cars I would use the sham cloth to drag the water off the cars without scratching the new paint. Worked wonders
I’ve just found your channel and began watching your videos for any and all advice. Your technique is amazing, and since I’m a newbie to redoing furniture, I’ll take all of the tips and advice I can get. I’m wanting to transform my bedroom set into this style/finish. Question: the paint use is it specifically designed for furniture or do I need to ask for that when I have some mixed? Also, do you have a “go-to” base paint color you normally use that you would recommend? Thanks for making these videos and being so transparent with how you use your technique. ❤️❤️
I love this Look that you introduced us all to and have refined over the years. I also love this table transformation with the black chairs. Question about mixing the Oil modified polyurethane with paint... If it was mixed one to one with a light color, such as a green, will it change the color of it? Also, when using it as a top coat, will it yellow ?
The oil modified polyurethane doesn’t yellow over time BUT the one I’m using in the video has a tint of yellow to give the look of true polyurethane. But if you’re using the just plane water based polyurethane or poly it doesn’t yellow and is completely clear so no color change will happen. PS thanks for being around since the early days 🖤🖤
How did I miss that we'd moved beyond the java glaze? Love the lighter color!
So beautiful! Thank you for sharing.
Love this info 👏👏👏
I just love your videos! 😊
I used some of those green brushes with the white handle today on some furniture! So very handy!
Wow, a great very informative and detailed video on this Pottery Barn duping. Thank you from a fellow Hoosier as well.
Beautiful!
Your work is amazing! I've learned a lot and would like to tackle repainting a Pottery Barn kids shelf from the 2000's. Would you use the same techniques and paint for that type of wood product? Thanks
I love your technique and the end-result is stunning. Hoping my broken shoulder heals and I can use my right arm to try your technique. (Of course I broke my predominant shoulder.)
That would be my luck too 😩 praying for a speedy recovery for you!
What colours did you use for this? It’s absolutely beautiful
Beautifully done table and tutorial! Thank you :) May I ask what you price a table like that at for reselling?
Gorgeous
Beautiful table!! One question do I have to prime my furniture doing this style?
I only use clear shellac if I have sanded to raw wood or filled any holes or chips with wood filler, otherwise the paints I use in my videos are super good at adhearing and I test them before I give my stamp of approval. BM advance and PPG showcase are my current go tos
Looks awesome!!!!!
I've seen the video on the different finishes, but can you do a series of videos showing the different processes of each or create a playlist of them. Also, I am wanting to start furniture flipping because I'm retired but having to work part-time to make it. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thank you love your channel.
Cindy, be sure to sign up for the newsletter bc I’m going to have some group coaching coming soon especially for people doing this as a business
@black sheep what color did u paint it on top before u put the glaze
Left it bare
Thank you so much 💕
What color is the PPG paint? You're giving me courage to try this. 🤔
My son just bought a house and bought a table with 4 chairs and a bench. One of the chairs was missing a corner in the seat. I ended up making a corner for the seat (things moms do:) ) and doing this finish on the seats of chairs, top of table and top of bench using the home depot paint and the varathane briarsmoke gel stain as shown in one of your previous videos. I painted the rest of the chairs, bench and table legs with a black chalk paint (which I had never used before). What kind of clear coat would you recommend on the tabletop? This whole painting furniture thing is something new for me:) Thank you for great videos!
General Finishes has great topcoats for tables.
Nice Job!
Chairs are a pain, but I will only spray them with a sprayer. Otherwise, they suck really bad. LOL
Do you have to seal this table? Would it scratch over time?
I have a question- I have a metal outdoor patio table. It’s got a faux wood finish but in gray 😢 I want to try this finish. Do you have a video on doing this on metal? Or do you have any advice or tips if one were to attempt this finish on metal?
You can definitely do it on an outdoor table just use outdoor paint that says it’s for metal in the same colors and use gel stain in the color aged oak by minwax (at Lowe’s) the ppl at the paint counter can help you pick a paint that is for outdoor metal 🖤🖤
Does adding the poly yellow it over time? I am debating if I am better off using a water based poly. But it is for a high use table so I need it durable. Any advice?
I cannot find decorative glaze java brown in canada! what should I pair with rugged tan to achieve the same look? im told the chalked aged glaze? help! so inspired 😍
When dry brushing a few colours on top of the pottery barn finish, is this before or after the top coat ( polyurethane)
Shannon, you are so talented and have good eyes for colors! The table is absolutely stunning. I have a question- a friend of mine lives in Atlanta and she has a dining table that needs to be refinished. Would you take a job like this? How can she contact you? Thank you very much!
Thank you! She can email me BlackSheepRestoration@gmail
thanks, I’ll ask her to contact you.
HELP! I am about to cry! I watched your master class videos and love them! Thank you. My problem is this: I refinished a dining table with this method. I mistakenly used very fine sand paper after the first clear coat, before applying the 2nd coat. Well, that removed the gel stain finish in spots, and nothing I did could get the gel stain to stick in those spots. I had to resand the entire table top and start all over. Well, I was so excited to finally be finished today, but when I went to my garage to check on it, a piece of grass was embedded in the clear coat! In removing the grass, the stain in that spot came off. I REFUSE to resand and start over AGAIN! How do you deal with bald spots where the stain has come off (but the base paint remains?) For some reason the stain won’t take on top of/over in these spots for touch ups! Has this ever happened to you, and what is your solution/recommendation?
Lisa, email me at BlackSheepRestoration@gmail.com so I can help you! You can use a suuuper fine paint brush to add in additional “grain” to the bare spots even over top of clear coat and then just wait for it to dry
@@blacksheephouse okay, thank you!
If you go over it carefully (not too close) with a heat gun it will remove the bubbles.
If I use only the glaze, should I poly over it? If yes, what do I use?
My finish comes out so much darker. Like your lighter finish.
Do what I did and mix the half poly half glaze mixture and it’ll be lighter for you 🖤
I have been watching the master class on the bedroom suite and I was wondering what the average cost of having a bedroom suite done ?
I’d charge around 1000 if you already have the furniture. I sold that set from the masterclass for 2400 but it was a really rare super pretty shape of French provincial furniture so that was a big part of the reason it sold for that amount.
Is this aged glaze chalk rustoleum or decorative glaze Java brown from rustoleum?
You can use either, I tested the results at the end of the video
Can I use the same technique on Ethan Allen Kingston bed? I want to change it from cherry brown stain to EA' shark fin smoky grey tone. completely novice . but can hold the brush, and follow the directions .
Totally 💯 did you see this video?

chamois cloth is pronounced as cham-me
I prefer a brushed faux wood finish so much more than the ones using the wood grain tools. Those look so fake to me. I have seen some counters brushed that had knots and everything and looked like wood counters.
Can this work with eggshell paint sheen?
It doesn’t work for me it ends up splotchy and the glaze absorbs into the porous paint you’ll need to put a clear topcoat on eggshell paint first if you want to do it.
❤
Wax finish product used?
Not on this one since it’s a kitchen table I went with oil modified polyurethane by Minwax
