Thank you to Leica Camera USA for partnering with my channel.
The Leica 28mm Summicron has been a mixed bag for me. I've doubted the high investment for a lens that could only provide marginal differences from my already stellar 28mm Elmarit. However, upon months of usage and trial, I have to say it's a worthwhile lens to own.
In street photography, the lens doesn't provide much in regular daylight settings. However, it's every form of photography outside of that is where the Summicron shines. It allowed me to switch gears and control pacing better with the f2 aperture. The shallow depth of field feels organic and sufficient in separating my subject from the background. The rendition is top-tier as with all Leica glass; the character is subtle and complementary.
Come say hello!

Sick of these titles they’re lame “I tried this so you don’t have to”. Thank you so much👏👏👏
Welcome back. Had this lens in hand for the first time at the weekend, it’s awesome
Love mine ! I’ve always been a 35mm guy until I discovered the 28mm, especially thanks to Leica. Since I bought my 28mm Summicron, I must say I’m thrilled. It’s a marvelous lens, and I actually prefer the Summicron over the Elmarit. Obviously, you pay the Leica price, but there’s that little something extra that makes it impossible for me to part with it.
28mm Summilux is my favorite daily lens. With that said I had the Summicron for over 2 years and it was truly amazing with a ton of character.
what a crazy daily you have. that's like daily'ing a super car
@@whoschrischu it’s pretty rad not gonna lie. But definitely a pain as far as weight and less close focusing. Only gripes really though. Insanely sharp wide open.
It’s a truly wonderful lens. I use the 28 Summicron and the 50 Summilux on my M11. It’s a powerful combo.
That intro was fire, made me watch till the end!
The old Chris chu is back baby!!! Missed this
He’s back.
No way I just looked last night for a new vid and we back baby :)
Love to see you back creating for yourself!
Thank you, man. Feels great
Picked my 28 f2 up yesterday for $2k in NYC. Latest version but not the close focus one.
Worth every penny but I am aware that was a super steal.
Just found your channel and I’m pumped to go and watch your back catalog 🔥
I missed your video man ! Welcome back !
Chris Chu is back! 🎉
shaking off the rust!
@@whoschrischunailed it bro, love the energy in this video 🫡
Enjoyed this one Chris. I completely get what you mean by options. Just back from Majorca (video to come!!) but I had my usual 28/2.8 and my 50/2 but I also packed my VERY old and not perfect VG 35mm 1.2 version 1!!! famous for it's imperfect everything and man at night I loved it. for a few nights around the little towns I just got to open it up and man...... sort of fell in love with it agian after shooting 5.6 and f8 a lot in recent years. Makes me consider the version 3 of it as it's much lighter! Super photos mate. Cheers
Geat video and its dope to see the highlight on Gee Moon! With the praise of this lens it makes me wonder why there isn't more emphasis on the Q series of Leica cameras. That lens is amazing! Sure, you cant swap it but its an outstanding lens and you can crop in post and retain a lot of detail.
UV filters are necessary for film camers if you want to take advantage of wide apertures. But for ease of use a TTL metering system is nice to have.
Hi Chris, I think you have really continued to level up your editing and storytelling, keep it up!
thank you so much. wait 'til the next video drops
My Lecia Q that has a 28mm forces me to move instead of waiting for my subject to get in perfect position. I love the 28mm!!
How do you feel about the balance and weight of the Summicron vs Elmarit?
Great video. I don't think going from F2.8 to F2.0 is worth it. I went from Elmarit to Summilux 28mm and that is night and day. So much more character in the 1.4 lens and it's sharper if that's important. The 28 Lux is a fantastic lens.
Love my elmarit 28 asph, super smooth on the m10m
maybe the elmarit focus is smoother for speed in street photography focus and the summicron's is tighter for more a more "slower focus" feel to nail that f2 aperture
Love the intro!
ya like jazz?
I have the new close focus 50mm summilux. It is magical. Worth every penny
Did you have the previous version?
@@TheVFXbyArt no but I’ve rented it a bunch of times. I do a lot of macro work. It’s worth it to me.
If you already have the old version there is not point in upgrading.
Please make a video on 16mm and super8 film 🙏
Take a look at the Thypoch Simera…loving mine so far.
We need to see the lux
My original lux review is so trash. I need a re-do
I would strongly suggest you rent a voigtlander 28 f1.5 before you buy anything.
THIS
Gee Moon a reel one! 🫡
Dope hat - where is it from?
That cron life is a good one but I never find myself shooting that fast on my 28 so the Elmarit has been perfect. My 50 crons are magnificent though. Once day I will move to a 28 cron as well-great video brotha
not even inside? I couldn't get behind the 50 crons tbh I've tried and the look just isn't interesting enough
@@whoschrischu yeah - I mean I would love one but just not enough to rn to buy over a few other lenses. I think having the 35 lux holds me back from reaching for the 28 in doors on low light. I have two 50 crons but my favorite is the 50 DR on my M3
I’m selling my Summicron right now. Got the 35 Summilux Pre ASPH and shoot the Q3 if I need 28. It’s a nice lens though, but kinda overpriced.
tldr: lens is 1 stop faster and gives more shallow depth of field and more light in doors and at night.
What ISO film were you using indoors?
800
I was thinking the new Voigtlander 28 f1.5
Good information to know
I'm just 2 min in but just get the Voigtlander 28mm 1.5.... You're welcome.
Or the 28mm f2. Got one for €400
Yes and 35mm f/1.4 if you like that focal range.
@@klarkolofsson nokton? Love that lens but only for film. Corners are muddy. Got the FLE for digital but VC 35mm 1.5 is probably just as nice.
Nah get the 28mm Summicron. The Voigtlander 28mm Ultron is the peasant lens.
@@Vladimir-hd5nn if that's the case I use my "peasant" lenses more than my Leica lenses... Back to the 28mm, the lux is too big and heavy, the cron is just a stop too slow. If you want a fast 1.4/5 28mm that is compact and has great image quality, they CV 28mm 1.5 ASPH is the fastest, smallest 28 you can get.
I’d like to 😅
great build and optical performance, but if you're buying it for either of those reasons, you're better off with the 2.8 Elmarit. I feel like this lens is only worth it if you actually shoot indoors a fair amount
check out the voightlander 28 f2 v1 its relatively affordable and ir has great character
Have you ever considered voigtlander lenses?
Thank you for your service 🫡
had to stop watching at 1:46 makes me queazy
Plastic hood on a lens that expensive …thanks but no thanks
The Summicron has a metal hood. Only the Elmarit has a plastic hood.
