How Did The They Made This Hack?
I have to admit, it would have been so much better if the background had some parallax scrolling to differentiate it from the foreground, but given the limitations of the NES this is impressive already.
NES parallax is very limited & would only work on a background with a repeating pattern. IMO the best solution is just duller or darker color.

@@JohnSmith-zk8xp yes but that relies on scanline-based scrolling. The NES only has one tile layer, so that method would scroll both the regions the player interacts with as well as the non-interactive background.
@@SMWssaamm A work around would be to modify the tile handler so you can offset it between two or more tiles that make up the "pattern" of a layer of background. The parts that move "faster" (closer to pov) would reference one pixel offset for so many pixels along the map reference. Further back, one pixel for several more pixels along the map.
@@SMWssaamm Another workaround is to do it the "hard way", and draw all the offsets for the layers and composite the background out of that. Runs into tile sheet space limits.
I clicked for one reason, witnessing the prettiest water on the NES, and oh BOY! i'm not disappointed.

I love how he grabs the ladders with his mouth. This one has some incredible bits to its visuals, but also that laggy pixel at the bottom of the / on the level counter is slightly insanity inducing as soon as you notice it.

It is not perfect, yet, playable dinosaur, and A E S T H E T I C S. I am enchanted by this.
This game doesn't even have blue lava. Just proper water.
Amazing looking rom hack but it's mostly the looks and not the game play. Background textures that look like solid platforms. I wouldn't believe this is SMB1 so credits for that. Water and sky looks awesome and custom enemies are a big plus. No hidden blocks to ruin your jumps is a bigger plus. Points for originality in a good way.

9:06 iirc slot 5 is a normal slot, slot 6 is a special use slot for powerups, vines, flagpoles, and bullet bills that come from the right side of the screen when slots 1-5 are occupied

Dude this is in fact the best hack simply because u play as yoshi
only thing I wish was that:
1. the sound track was longer, Yoshi island 1-1 music becomes very monotonous very quickly :(
2. they did some assembly hacking to give Yoshi his signature hover and swallow attacks
Other then that though, sprite work is beautiful for the NES.
Kinda has a 3D look in it but it’s 2d. Looks 3D due to the background.
When you were saying prettiest waterfalls I was thinking like get the colors mid draw and do some reflections but rip. Still nice though, wondering what the NES api allows :thonk.
(Though with the map/sprite palette 2bit stuff I assume that would make it way harder)

I'm sure there was a reason why the stage music was so simple that I just don't know about, but it bothered me and I can't explain why.
The only possible issue would be space constraints, and that is highly doubtful. Most likely just didn't have the knowledge, or didn't care to take the time to make a full song.
