That’s awesome I found myself in a Nissan leaf 15 and I don’t know much so this helps just changed my fob battery today lol and got dope hubcaps lol looking forward to more videos man. I got music if you ever need for your videos too
A quick Google produced the following: The CR2025 and CR2032 are both 3V button cells, have identical diameters but the 2032 is 3.2mm thick while the 2025 is 2.5mm thick. With just 0.7mm of difference, for as long as either fits in the battery compartment, they can be used interchangeably with minimal effect.
You should use 2032 only if it doesnt bulge, and you better not. Leaf keys have no indicator light, this is to save battery and assure they last really long. If your keyfob suddenly is dead its not the fob battery but the 12v battery under the hood that has been drained for some reason, maybe a door was left open or whatever. Has happened here, not sure what or who caused it.
Yes, it is reading a chip inside the remote - similar (but not the same) to tapping your credit card to pay. When the battery is good, it is able to send a signal wirelessly. When the battery is dead, it needs to touch the reader
Thank you so much. Now I understand and am confident that it will work even with a completely drained battery. Before I was wondering if it was able to use some small amount of residual charge when it was placed close to the reader.@@derekthornton
great video, I got a 1 year old car from dealer gave me only FOB :( day later it shows low battery, now I have a Duracell and getting also sometimes errors, FOB broken?
I have a question..I think it’s my car key idk yet but everything is turning on in my car but it’s not starting . What does my car key have to do it not starting ? Please help 😩
Hi my Canadian friend, I am struggling with determining the S.O.H. of these leafs. I am after a 2013 model and saw one on a Japanese exporters site that had 9 bars, 7 white and 2 red. To me this meant that the first bar being a 15% loss plus another 2 x 6.25% = 12.5% loss. So, total loss is 15 + 12.5 - 100 = 72.5% total loss. Is this correct as the japanese importer had no idea. Also, how reliable is just reading the number of bars on a photo of the dash. I mean is this going to be a good yardstick to go on or are there other more critical factors or measurements to take into account such as getting a Leaf Spy reading. Whats your advice.
If possible, get a leafspy reading as it provides more specific data. As far as your math, those are the minimums. The dash tells you it has lost 3 bars, but doesn't tell you how close it is to losing a 4th.
I have a question. I thought that if you leave your car on and walk away with your key someone could steal your car but wouldn't get far. A few yards at best before the car realizes the key is not with you and shuts down. Would that also be the case if you turn on the car with the technique shown in the video but the battery in the key is dead? Wouldn't you go a few yards and the car would shut down?
Great question. But no... If the car is activated manually, then it doesn't worry about the proximity of the key while the car stays on. Once turned off, that resets again. That said, I wouldn't start the car this way, and then leave the car on while unattended, as it is possible to be driven.
For traffic safety reasons cars will not stop if no keyfob is detected during driving. A jam on a highway could kill dozens if stolen cars suddenly stopped going 130kph.
Oh and if your keyfob appears to be suddenly dead its more likely because the 12v battery is drained, open the hood and charge with a regular good old 12v charger.
The plus and minus are both marked on the circuit boards, the back black piece is positive, the front with the buttons is negative. CR2032 fits fine and will last 40% longer than CR2025.
That's all well and good but what happens when your Nissan is keyless entry and start? We have a 2017 Qashqai and though we have 2 fobs, the key in my opinion is useless since there is no key entry in the doors or ignition. So what does the key do in this case?
Thank you, Derek. Nice to know I can start the car if battery is dead.
Gees, thanks a lot! Simple, short and straightforward video.
I appreciate that, thanks for the comment
Great video, did not know you could start the car by holding the fob to the start button. Great to hear! Thank you.
You're very welcome, thanks for watching!
Thanks for showing how to start the car with a dead fob.
Thanks for watching, I appreciate it
Extremely useful little video 😊
Thanks so much
Thanks! Exactly what I've been wondering about since I bought my Leaf second-hand and the manuals were in Japanese.
Haha, all good, glad I could help.

If I knew how, I could. Maybe I can figure it out ;)

Thank you i didn't know how to start ghe car with dead fob
Happy to help, thanks for watching.
what's the difference between the 2025 and 2032 batteries? they both seem to work
A quick Google produced the following:

Does this work for Murano?
I believe it does, but not 100% certain. If you test it, let me know.
Good stuff bro .. thanks
Thanks Derek, great info.
You're welcome, thanks for watching
Great video, Thank you

Alternate Nissan 2017 key fob ‘incorrect ID’after I’ve inserted a new2032 battery, even tho I got the same msg before new battery.
That seems more like an issue with the fob than the battery itself.
Can you speak to how this works? Is the car reading something in the specific fob that is independent of the battery?
Yes, it is reading a chip inside the remote - similar (but not the same) to tapping your credit card to pay. When the battery is good, it is able to send a signal wirelessly. When the battery is dead, it needs to touch the reader

For extra confidence, try taking the battery out completely and testing it. Should work just fine :)
Nice! Thanks!@@derekthornton
great video, I got a 1 year old car from dealer gave me only FOB :( day later it shows low battery, now I have a Duracell and getting also sometimes errors, FOB broken?
Fob could be broken, but could also be defective battery. Try another brand new one first
@derekthornton since I just got the car I try with the dealer first. . Where can I get a new FOB only Nissan?
Check your local Facebook marketplace... Sometimes you can get 3rd party.. Otherwise, Nissan
Thank you , very well made video
You're welcome, thanks for watching
Cr2032 fits in my keyfob, just fyi. Leaf sl 2022.
I did all of what you said, but Murano still won't start?
These instructions are for the nissan leaf. Would have thought it is the same for all Nissan's, but perhaps not?
I have a question..I think it’s my car key idk yet but everything is turning on in my car but it’s not starting . What does my car key have to do it not starting ? Please help 😩
You likely need a new 12v battery... Try that first, and if it still doesn't start, you may need a service appointment
Sorry, I'm not a mechanic at all, so best advice I can give without knowing your specific situation is to get it serviced by a qualified person
Nice, thanks.
You're welcome, thanks for watching

what if this still doesn’t start the car?
Thanks :)

my car doesnt start like this.. whats should i do
Are you able to start your car at all?
Terrific
Oh and if your keyfob appears to be suddenly dead its more likely because the 12v battery is drained, open the hood and charge with a regular good old 12v charger.
Also good advice. Generally speaking, with a leaf, if something is wrong, check the 12v battery ;)
Still doesn't work please help
Likely an issue with your key itself then, sorry. Unfortunately, a trip to the dealership is probably in your future
Love it
Happy to help, thanks for watching
It dosent work for my car...

I just had this problem this morning. I ended up walking 5 minutes to buy a new battery. I have a Sentra.
We would all be so lucky. Fortunately, I knew this little trick when my battery ran out far from any kind of store, and late for a work meeting.
That's all well and good but what happens when your Nissan is keyless entry and start? We have a 2017 Qashqai and though we have 2 fobs, the key in my opinion is useless since there is no key entry in the doors or ignition. So what does the key do in this case?
Can't speak to no key slot in your door handle) though it should be om the driver side).... However, you absolutely can start with the fob alone
Same battery as apple AirTags!
Likely. Same battery as a lot of things :)
