The avenue was created to relieve Myasnitskaya Street, named after A.D. Sakharov, a Soviet scientist who was one of the 10 most outstanding people of the 20th century for Russia. Currently, a project for a tram line on Academician Sakharov Avenue is being developed.

Проспект создавался для разгрузки Мясницкой улицы, назван в честь А. Д. Сахарова советского учёного, входящего в число 10 самых выдающихся людей XX столетия для России. В настоящее время ведётся разработка проекта трамвайной линии на проспекте Академика Сахарова.
