  • Boise State won on the Blue in dominant fashion vs Portland State in the highest attended home opener in school history! What did this game tell us about BSU and what does this win mean for Boise State’s CFP goals? I review this game, all phases (offense, defense, special teams) assigning a grade to each, take a look at how well (or not) Boise fulfilled my keys the game, and analyze what this means for Boise State and the future of this team and season.

    What were your thoughts on Malachi Nelson’s first game action as a Bronco?

    • @letitroll610

      Good overall, I like how analytical and calm he looks, the 1 10-15 yd. throw out to the right that he missed, looked like he kept it to the right on purpose? making sure it was his guy or nobody, didn't need a pick 6. 2 drives both ending in TD, I would call that properly operating the offense.

      Malachi was definitely shaky looking to me. I think this helped him.
      I thought the two drives were good and I actually wanted one more but I felt he was shaky enough it could go either way and you really want to make sure it does not end like Taylen's first game he played as that hurt Taylen I think.

      @BroncoBleymaier He played well. There was a lot of pressure on him just because of who he was, and he handled it. I heard complaints that his first 8-9 plays were runs. Well, the run was working. there was no need to pass immediately. When he did pass, it was not bad for a first start. He's good in motion.

      Even if he was 0-5, whatever...he needed to get on the field. And he did pretty well! No problems, good experience for him. But no QB controversy. YET!

    Very pleased Boise went deep into the depth chart. It is huge to give those guys experience, and it's important for morale. 5 am workouts with no playing time weighs on a player.
    I still have concerns on defense and their passing game. Wash St will really be the game that proves whether Boise is playing close to their potential.

    It was good to see Malachi play. I agree with somewhat regarding how much time he got to play. I felt you repeated yourself regarding this decision by the coach. I believe they have a plan for him. I don't think stars mean anything to the coaches just saying. They are now ranked which is well deserved. The Washington State game is going to be insane. @@BroncoBleymaier Considering it was Malachi's actual college game debut... He was AWESOME! It was essentially the ideal "no pressure environment" for his Bronco Nation christening... Fulton was warming Nelson up right in front of where I was sitting at the game and I've honestly never seen anyone throw a more beautiful spiral.. Fulton would return a sharp precise ball to Nelson. Nelson would catch - set - throw ... and every single throw came down and then seemed like it "floated" at the end... like football shaped airplanes kept landing in front of Fulton. Re Malachi: I trust Koetter. I think Malachi’s short tenure on the field was determined by practice and other relevant events. Koetter knows how to develop a quarterback, and he’s here, charitably, bailing us out. I don’t pretend to know what’s going on inside BSU football, but I trust those who do.

    • @BroncoBleymaier
      @BroncoBleymaier  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      How would practice determine him getting pulled after 2 drives with toms of time left unless you are saying that he had exhausted the plays he was comfortable with in the playbook which be a far more concerning indication…

    • @ezekielloseke5514
      @ezekielloseke5514 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@BroncoBleymaier it could be an issue with knowledge. It could be an issue of temperament-perhaps Malachi didn’t demonstrate a stress response that justified more than two drives. It could be that Malachi didn’t earn more reps. It could be that the third string qb successfully challenged Malachi for a spot. Dirk could be trying to keep his 2nd string qb from stealing his starter’s spotlight. I don’t know because I’m not BSU’s offensive coordinator or on staff. I do know Dirk knows what he’s doing and has our beloved Bronco’s best interest in mind, and as such, I trust him.

    • @BroncoBleymaier
      @BroncoBleymaier  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s good to trust the coaches but they also aren’t flawless. Trusting the coaches is what got Boise State to where they are today. My guess is Koetter was focused on giving all the backups equal playing time vs game planning for the opportunity to specifically develop Nelson. There is no way Cutforth is challenging Malik for the second string spot. Not a chance based on all reporting out of camp. I trust Dirk overall, especially when it comes to general game planning and who should start but he hasn’t been flawless this season (I.e the 4th quarter play calling vs Oregon) and that’s ok. Someone doesn’t have to be perfect to be trusted or respected. However I believe this was a major missed opportunity with Nelson that could have major ramifications down the road.

    I definitely see why Madsen won the starting job but Nelson is a promising freshman once he develops a little more, he can throw on the move so naturally. On another note, how deep is our running back room? Lol it looks like we could comfortably go 5 deep. Hope Sire Gaines isn't too injured and can get healthy soon.
