    SOLO RIDING AROUND THE WORLD: tinyurl.com/3w...
    I rode northwest to a small village, Fshat, close to the North Macedonia border. My first ride was 163km northeast to a small guesthouse I found online, Guesthouse Shtini www.booking.co... I was intrigued as this guesthouse seemed to provide a truly remote Albanian village experience.

    ABOUT ME:
    In 2013, I started my solo travel journey, leaving Indonesia in 2016 to become a full-time traveler and TH-cam creator. My background in International Relations has fueled a profound interest in exploring different countries. My content focuses on exploring different cultures through the lens of a solo female traveler, aiming to capture real-life interactions and experiences.
    My travels kicked off with a five-month trip across Asia, after which I moved to China in January 2017 to work as an English teacher-my first time living abroad. I left China in 2018 to fully commit to creating videos on TH-cam, where I share my travels and the cultures I encounter.
    Living nomadically since 2016, I settled in England in early 2022 after marrying my British husband, David. Now based in the UK, I continue to travel and share my adventures on TH-cam.

    Welcome back everyone! Thank you for tuning into another episode. On this video, I am riding to Northwest Albania on a 150CC Piaggio scooter. This scooter was lent to me complimentary by Rent Vespa Tirana. If you are interested to do the same, you can check their Instagram here: instagram.com/rentvespatirana/

      H Syifa! I just wanted to mention smth.about the mentality of the Albanians regarding that incident with the man at the Church.
      You see, Albanians come from communism where privacy and personal space didn't exist. Living in big families and working in groups was a common thing during those times. Therefore, even now, people do interfere a lot in your personal life with very intimate questions that make you very uncomfortable.
      Sometimes, in trying to take care of you, they can annoy you a lot. It happens to me all the time when I turn back home for holidays, but I know these habits and I just try to ignore them.
      The first questions someone completely unknown would ask you is " How old are you, are you married, do you have children, where do you work, how much do you get paid, etc, etc".( if you carry on talking further they might even find you a husband🤣).
      They simply don't realise that this is interference and strange behaviour to the foreigners. I guess the man wanted to show off to his family and friends that he got to speak with an Indonesian tourist woman on a scooter and having a picture with you it wouldn't click to him as an unacceptable behaviour. You may be the first woman traveller on a scooter in Albania. While for you it's normal, for those people it is a novelty and something very rare. You really surprised all those people in the video when you said you are going to Kukes with a scooter. All of them raised their eyebrows as its not an easy road on a scooter, especially when you ride off- roads.
      Enjoy your travels Syifa and next time you need to ask first about the conditions of the streets before you go somewhere deep into the mountains. We have ended up just like you many times.....

    Syifa, you really are an off-road traveller. Albania is wild ( used to be even wilder) and you are going through old roads where Albanians don't go anymore. I'm trying to figure it out how did you ended up in that unpaved road? Where on Earth did you go?
    That George Bush bakery got his name as that was the place where President Bush went and sat on his trip to Albania.
    As for the stupid man, I'm guessing he was pissed of that you didn't take a picture with him as he wanted to show it to people that he met a tourist woman on a scooter up there to the Church(!). A woman alone in a scooter is a novelty. This is very, very rare in Albania.
    I grew up in that small town you passed with a big runned down factory outside the town before you reached that " train station" in Milot. During communism, everything was different. We used to travel a lot by train, but trains got totally abandoned during democracy and they are out of the questions right now even though there is a big plan to modernise them and the work has started in Tirana - Durres area.
    Those bunkers are abandoned and they are filled up with soil and vegetation right now- hence they look very small, but in the past those bunkers were well maintained, cleaned and those bunkers used to communicate with one another.
    Safe travels Syifa and take care of yourself!

    • @liljanasufaj4130
      @liljanasufaj4130 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Zaydan Alfariz Albanians didn't drive during communism ( a few of them like my dad who was a professional driver) as private cars were not allowed. But we used bicycles a lot ( women as well). Now you can find plenty of women drivers, but riding motorbikes is not a common thing even for men, let alone the women.
      I guess it's because our streets used to be terrible even for cars let alone motorbikes so motorbikes are not our " cup of tea".
      Also, motorbikes are seen as a risky way to drive, so we don't use them so much. My brother loved a motorbike ,but my dad very strictly forbade him to use one.

    • @liljanasufaj4130
      @liljanasufaj4130 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Zaydan Alfariz I don't know how much you know about Albania, but you should know that Albania is a small country with a very mountainous terrain. Building railways through mountains its not an easy thing to do,( we do have a railway through mountains which desperately needs modernization right now), but our road system has improved immensely lately. It's so much easier now to go quick and easy from point A to point B. Syifa is travelling through our old hilly roads which are mostly abandoned these days....
      Also, you have to take on consideration that Indonesia's population is massive compared to Albania, so having a motorbike I guess its a necessity for you to drive through crazy traffic. Albania just needs to finish some of the main junction roads who are under construction right now to relieve the traffic ( expecially during summer holiday times when the country doubles in its population).
      Regarding motorbikes, I have seen that in Rome and Naples( Italy) driving a motorbike is a necessity through their narrow, crowded streets. I don't think Albania has that same problem with its streets. You are seeing pictures of Kruja which is a mountainous town and that street Syifa is driving on is not the main road. Our roads are not that narrow in general.
      As for the cars, we are nothing like Greece. We don't use Smart cars, we use mainly Mercedes Benzes as they were the best cars for our streets when they were terrible. Now, we use Mercedes because we simply like that type of car.
      Anyway, building new and modernising old railways is a priority of this government right now. The work has already started.
      Edit: I wish we ban cars again. We lived in Paradise during communism in regard of nature without knowing it. The country was very raw and simple, but soooo beautiful, full of wild flowers and fireflies. I don't see fireflies anymore now..........

    • @liljanasufaj4130
      @liljanasufaj4130 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Zaydan Alfariz Until 2000 Albania didn't know where it was and was totally on its knees. It was chaos, uprising, people were not used with capitalism ways just yet, the War in Kosova had just ended with almost a million refugees in Albania alone, infrastructure was inexistent. These were hard times for Albania. The country had to start from zero and it was already 50 years behind his neighbours, let alone Western Europe.
      But, from 2010 and after, Albanians got more prosperous and they are investing a lot in their own country right now. Albania has walked forward with giant strides and moving ahead at a very fast pace.
      From being the poorest country in Europe, not only the country overpassed some of the Eastern European countries a few years ago, but this year in economic terms just overtook Bosnia & Herzegovina and North Macedonia to be right behind Serbia ( and dont forget that these countries had all their infrastructure intact).
      This is a big improvement for Albania. We are a small population with a very large Albanian diaspora who pours a lot of money in Albanian economy.
      I believe the future seems quite bright for Albania. Finally we have grasped what capitalism meant and the changes are quite drastic......

    • @adamknight5089
      @adamknight5089 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@liljanasufaj4130 That is incredible, to be only slightly behind Serbia, which I consider a powerhouse in the region, is a massive feat. Actually I think tourism can play a big part - you have coastline as well as being unspoilt. I think exporting of goods can also be a big win. I personally buy bottled water from Albania because I trust it a lot more than anything made here in Australia. I hope things continue to improve and the train network gets brought back to life.

    • @liljanasufaj4130
      @liljanasufaj4130 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@adamknight5089 True. Tourism is playing a big part in Albanian economy right now. This year tourism it has been " booming" and made it possible that economic growth went to almost 4%, the highest in the region. It is tourism which helped Croatia and Montenegro prosper ahead of Serbia in economic terms despite Serbia's massive industry ( Europe is investing a lot there in order to keep Serbia closer to Europe and far from Russia).
      Hopefully Albania is going the same direction. We got some massive projects in place all around Albania, projects which will change the face of the country forever( ports - touristic and commercial alike, airports, highways, railways). In a small and vibrant country as Albania, these kind of projects will have huge impact.
      I should add the " black economy" unfortunately as well.....Even though not legal, the drug and trafficking money has had a lot of importance into economic growth. I believe this has been secretly the main promotor of the economic growth.....

    @SyifaAdriana - A tough day but one, when the dust settles, you will look back on because you came through it unscathed. Sometimes when you travel, so many things go wrong in a short space of time. Your camera mic, the aggressive guy and the lack of road to the guesthouse all test the will to go on but, in the long run, the good things which happen so far outweigh the bad as to render the latter's significance as negligible.
    Another great video and, as someone said in an earlier comment, your series will surely be the 'go-to' travel guide for Albania - I've got itchy feet now!

    Glad you answered my curiosity regarding the railways. When I was there in October, I noticed a lot of single track rail lines cutting through mountains etc, on my route between Berat and Korce. Never saw a train, and it wasn't a transport option on Google maps. Now I know why.

      During communism it was a train that ran through mountains from Durres to Pogradec ( in the border with Macedonia). The railway system went completely bankrupt after the fall of communism and it has been abandoned for a long time.
      This year, the modernization of railway work ( high speed trains) has started in the main cities from Tirana - Durres and the plans are to improve all the old railways and build the new ones such as the one which will connect Durres with Prishtina ( Kosova).
      The railway tracks still exist in the Western areas of Albania, but they are so run down that they are not in use anymore for passengers. Hopefully very soon they will be rebuilt and put in good use. I loved the trains during communism and in such a country with a great and magnificent landscapes, a train ride is always a pleasure for your eyes.

    This is the historical legendary town of Kruja, the center of Albanian resistance against the Ottomans. This place endured 3 great sieges by Sultans themselves ( apart from other sieges) and still the Ottomans couldn't get the castle and defeat Scanderbeg and its small Army. As long as he lived, the Ottomans couldn't take Kruja so Albania enjoyed its freedom from Ottomans for more than 25 years under Scanderbeg command.
    You can see the terrain of the area helped Albanians a lot. Only Albanians know the ways how to get up in those backdrop mountains behind the town. That's why Albanians love their mountains a lot as they provided us with shelter, food, protection - basically everything and they gave us always a freedom you would never get it in the lowlands. Albania stands into the crossroads between the West and the East, the North and the South. The country has been under siege throughout its entire history. Many Armies and Empires have passed through causing havoc to its inhabitants, so Albanians escaped into their high mountains and survived.
    By the way, on top of Kruja mountain there is a bektashi Shrine called Sari Saltic where locals go ( the reason why you see locals walking into the road). I hope you went a bit further up than that view point as the roads heads up right onto the top of the mountain where you could have had one of the best views ever in Albania, over the mountains and the sea at the same time.
    If you follow that mountain road even further, you would end up in a very famous touristic place especially during communism called Qafe Shtama, deep into the mountain range.
    Enjoy your travels Syifa!
