This Paganini theme was used by many composers (Brahms, Liszt...), but only Rachmaninov thought of flipping the main theme (14:30) to get the most beautiful and serene melody of all time!
Also, I’m a pianist myself, and Daniil Trifonov is one of my favorite performers. The way he feels music...

I realize Mehta is a skilled musician. I happened to work under him when we were both in our 40's and was treated as such, so I am left with that impression rather than his musicianship, which is extraordinary. When I was 18 and new at college, I bought a Webcor portable phonograph, bought Rachmaninov plays Rachmaninov, listened, over and over and often cried myself to sleep over this composition. I have no hesitation now at age 85, in saying that Daniil Trifonov beats the composer himself on playing this. And his version of Rach 3 is to die for, too. Just glad I have lived this long! Thank you, Mr T!

He's so absolutely in control of every single note, phrase, accent and dynamic and his concept of the work as a whole is sublimely satisfying - and he was only 20 years old at the time ! I'm in awe of Daniil Trifonov's musicianship : for me he surpasses all others (and that is not to devalue all others in any sense). Add to that this world class orchestra conducted by the great Zubin Mehta and you have the recipe for a magnificent performance of Rachmaninoff's masterpiece - which is just what we got ! Thank you for posting it.

I've heard it many times too, and I don't know if I'd go that far. But it was very very good, and I'm hard to please with this sort of thing. There are too many pianists who just don't capture the whole spirit of the pieces they play, and this particular piece has a whole lot of spirit to capture. The first time I heard the Rhapsody, it was the Phillipe Entremont recording with Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. That performance is not perfect (if perfection even exists,) but had a certain energy that was infectious. It's still my favorite, but this one is right up there as well.

Amazing difference between these two men. Mehta, the elder technician, a later day Eugene Ormandy, always competent, knows all the repertoire, done it all, rarely inspired. Knows the job. Loves conducting. Music? ... not as much. And then there is Trifonov, so young, so passionately delighted and moved by the music he plays, perfect adventurous technique, thrilled at what he is supremely able to do, and the pleasure it gives him and us. You can see how much the orchestra players admire him. He is not jaded like most of them. He is not yet a hack or a money-making note perfect robot. He plays as music like this should be played. Spontaneously, exuberantly. A gift from the Russian gods!

Emotional intensity much? A tear fell from his cheek at 14:49 just as he's leading into Variation 18! And I nearly started crying right along with him. You can see the light catch it as it falls through the darkness. What a metaphor. What an absolutely inspired performance of this great work! ***** Did you notice how when Maestro Mehta first approached the podium, he appeared to look weary.....or had that "oh here we go again expression" with yet another RACH Rhaps. on Theme of Paganini.....ho-hum?
Not to imply this was not rehearsed in advance, but once Daniil started playing...( and btw ) I LOVE this orchestra... filled with "seasoned" musicians.... (observe the expressions of many throughout this piece, especially the female cellist with the white hair at end of performance) ....such exuberant, professional, excellent musicians and yet they as we say here in America: truly "GET IT" and performed as if they too were gifted musicians in their 20's. Zubin is still extraordinary here. I do believe Trifonov's performance brought back the Maestro from his late 70's to his early 40's! And I just LOVE this!

From the opening you could see that Zubin was anything but tired. From the tuck of the shoulder, to the opening of the thumb and index finger as the signal to the person with the triangle. And he's still the best at "stopping the orchestra on a dime"--even live. Note the sequence in the 20:00 - 21:00. Absolutely amazing live performance.

Regarding Triifonov, he is wonderful piano player; I don't know why, but Rachmaninov played by Russian pianists sounds differently! Amazing, except for his posture, which is extremely ugly to see!

Cohesiveness, rhythmic propulsion, passion, tenderness. This interpretation is so youthful, yet emotionally speaks like one who has delved deeply into the nuances. His pointed rhythms showcase elements off this piece often ignored. same with the lovely counterpoint in the left hand. Yet with all his brilliance, he willingly allows himself to be ACCOMPANIST to the orchestra when it is THEIR turn. At this age, to be so confident of his place, and so accomplished with dynamics is so rewarding to this lover of Rachmaninoff. Maestro Mehta willingly went along with this young master's insistence on keeping a constant flow of these wonderful variations. The feeling of Concerto, rather than theme and variations was never more apparent to me than this performance.
It is so wonderful to know that classical music is in the hands of such sensitive and dynamic talents like Mr Trifinov, and others.
A joy from start to finish.

What a wonderful interview, and great insight into this extraordinary young man. These questions, coming from someone "inside" the competition, makes this interview truly relevant. Daniil capsulized his performances beautifully when he said (paraphrasing) "if I give myself to the music, the audience will respond. The music FIRST."
One feels he (meaning me") can leave this earth know that this pianist will provide the coming generations with profound and beautiful music making.
Thank you, and God bless you, Daniil.

I actually like his Chopin better than his Rachmaninov. He can make the piano sing which is what's needed in Chopin. In Rach 2 and 3, I want more POWER from him in the climaxes.

I love the way Zubin originally comes to the podium (almost yawning...as if... yes...just another boring "gig" hahaha))... then.. "the kid" goes wild ...AND mild with sensitivity.. The orchestra is so exuberant! By the end of this.... ALL are electrified... I am speaking not of only the audience. Check out on You Tube the following:
Trifonov-Sergei Rachmaninov Piano Concerto no. 3. I HAVE heard him do this better. Parts at the beginning movement are a bit careless... other parts are sublime! It is among THE best Rach 3's I've ever seen and heard...L-I-V-E... and he performs this with a bunch of "kids" (but hey...he's a kid here too) who IDOLIZE him. There IS a section (somewhere into 8 minutes of the piece) where the Conductor "almost" loses the orchestra... but Daniil plays on with aplumb and it all comes together. NOT MY post... but I guarantee you will enjoy. Alles Gute!! :-) ...et vive la musique!

bravaLiz Having just watched it again, I am still amazed at the orchestral ensemble playing by the orchestra. Mehta brings out all the bravura and mystery of this work just as it is mirrored on the face of Trifonov in his spectacular performance. All the dynamics are maintained and the coordination of orchestra and soloist is seamless. I would rate it among the ten best performances of any work
that I have ever heard or seen.

Martin Padderborn you are officially "excused"....:-) bwahahaha....
Ain't GREAT Music and Artistry....wonderful? Don't know how I'd go on in this sometimes nasty world.... without the beauty of the likes of this. Was/AM "I" being overly superfluous or too verbose? and.....do I care? Savor the good. There is so much out there!! A plethora of talent to remind us that we are blessed.
      Take Care.

This looks to be professionally videotaped yet I've never seen a pro cameraman pan like he does at 5:15 and elsewhere. Makes it look like the video was shot by an amateur in the audience using his phonecam. Interesting. That aside, I've added Trifonov's performance to Mikhail Pletnev's w/ Abbado as the two best Rhapsodies here on TH-cam. There are others in b&w such as Rubinstein's and Janis that are stupendous but they are either fragmented or the sound quality is not optimum because of obsolete sound systems. Go with these, IMHO. __J Joe (also a composer of a Piano Concerto No 2 in c Minor) Ooops they pulled the complete Pletnev/Abbado off TH-cam. So sad. Guess that leaves only the Trifonov, which is not a bad thing, but the Pletnev will be missed.

i cannot stop watching him, Maestro Mehta who STILL has it after all of these years, the wonderful Israel Philharmonic, and the piece itself, a masterwork. I was on another site and some "teenagers" kept saying that he "emoted" to the point where they said he looked like a "creepy" ALIEN... from "outer space".... at first, I thought, what stupid comments. Then, I thought about it. They are right. This young man IS indeed OUT OF THIS WORLD! I especially love the andante sections, with winds, french horns, strings,(including the pizzicato) and the subtle artistry displayed by this young man... not just all of the "pyrotechnics"

he's out of this world alright and I LOVE everything about him even his expressions. I could watch him all day and almost have! lol. He's fabulous. Those teenagers are either jealous OR they don't understand how music is an expression of the heart and without the heart the music is just organized noise. I wouldn't change a thing about him.

‘It’ - Rachmaninov, Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini
‘It’ hurts, summoning demons from his heart deep within
Then ‘it’ flirts as if saving his soul from all sin
Ceremonial highs, which absorb him completely
Contortions arise yet each finger falls so sweetly
Syncopation transcends and the hand comes to rest
Each phenomenal note leaving each key caressed.
    Extraordinary…
He lives through ‘it’, as ‘it’ lives through him
A performance so powerful it could tear limb from limb
But with the touch of an ethereal to enchant and delight
Before leaving us beaming off into the night.
Philharmonic and Mehta both played their part,
But in rhapsody it is clear that Trifonov… gave to ‘it’ his heart.
    Marvellously performance - simply splendid!
    “Bravo” never meant so much!

Mr. Trifonov's phrasing is perfection. Also, in certain places when a phrase is repeated consecutively, he treats the second iteration as an echo (example: 1:16). I love that. Also, where appropriate, he allows his instrument to become part of the orchestra, not the soloist trying to overpower the orchestra (the famous variation 18, for example, 15:26). Wonderful performance.
