As a rock drummer I was searching jazz. Went to the RECORD store picked this album, and this song incredibly challenged anything I could think of. Changed me.
I loved this group from the first time I heard them. I was at a Chaka Khan concert and the Yellow Jackets opened for her. I was hooked on them ever since.
Thank you Yellowjackets. Been a fan since 1987 as a teenager. Your music has been a great influence and inspiration in my life. Thank you for my introduction into jazz.
1988 in Mombasa Kenya on safari at Amboseli Lodge, Tsavo this cut burned in to my ears and mind the beauty of the sight of great Mount Kilimanjaro, the plains of Tsavo and Tanzania. My 2nd time there i will never forget it. Especially when i hear this cut.
Four Corners. First CD I ever purchased based on recommendation of sales person. It wasn't the kind of music I was used to, it was better. It is exceptional and sounds better now.
I'll never forget seeing Jim Haslip on stage so young and vibrant,to see him swinging his mid to long length hair to the beat as he made love to his bass. Will Kennedy hitting each drum with a some what angry look on his face as if he was fighting with his set,Russell Ferrante, fully concentrated and looking like Schroeder from the "peanuts" comic strip as he played every piano key with precision and the fabulous Marc Russo who would stand in front of an audience like a statue with no name but would sound out some of the most beautiful melodies on a sax that I have ever heard in modern jazz! They looked like college students just out to jam for fun. No pay. It was exciting to see them that way in the late 80's I was someone who was just discovering modern jazz. This song reminds me of that first time that I laid eyes on them!
At least 15 years ago, there used to be a radio show simply called "The Health Show". This was the intro music. It stuck with me and I looked up the show and found a recording. Tonight I Shazamed it and now I'm here. Funny how things shake out. Surf Wisely.
Cuando escucho este tema ya con 31 años de edad, y habiendolo conocido siendo muy pequeña, solo se me viene a la cabeza agradecerle a mi viejo el amor que nos dió a mis hermanas y a mí al compartirnos esta música ❤
Bought this album back in 1987. This song never gets old. Alex Acuna's percussion work is killin'! Some of his best ever. Equal to or better than his contributions to Weather Report
jayson biggs I bought this CD after hearing this track on kego jazz FM radio station in LA right after I bought my BMW 325i convertible while I was living right near the coast in Huntington beach CA, well you get the idea....
KKGO.... how about cruising down Balboa to the Studio Cafe for Jazz in Newport Beach.... Yellowjackets #1 - too bad KKGO went Classical Music, down went jazz
If this piece doesn't grab you and make you want to listen to it again again again again.. and if you take a moment to put it into your mind and your heart ❤️. Then it starts all over..
As one of my favorite Bands, I would like to list and share some of my favorite tracks by them with all of you in the comment section, the one we just heard, the RedSea, Ancestors, Invisible people, Greenhouse, Cross Current, Father time, Savannah, my second personal favorite as of today (2022), and my number 1 favorite track is New Jig!!! I've always been into drums but this particular track made me want to play the Bass guitar, Jimmy was Awesome!!!
Beautiful song and for me a late discovery in 2019 - I never knew this track in 1987 - I find it an inspiring song that makes me think about the electronic techno music that I had produced in the 90s - but this jazz track is almost live human without almost I think the influence of a machine computer.
And now it's 2023 and it is still astounding. I work in sound production. There is nothing like this being produced now. Well except for the current iteration of the Jackets. This composition demands your attention, so that you can hear something that is like nothing else
From Their 1st Album, Yellow Jackets 're Way out. Remember Tracks like "Matinee Idol", "Sittin' in It" &c., 😊 These Guys are Good. I think 🙂 They re-defined Jazz Fusion in Their Own Terms. ✌️👌
i heard this realtime, but now i know this has complicated texture at beginning (-_-). and the theme melody is unison of sax and bass. then the bass sound is? maybe synth lower zone. beautiful song! another verse, bass does as usual. left side monotonous one note sequence changes subtlely the tone. so maniac programming!
I feel like the song was intended to be 3/4 throughout, albeit perhaps with a little misdirection in the first few bars. But I see both of those time signatures are equivalent and largely a matter of perspective. In other words there can sometimes be no definitive way of telling whether a song is 3/4 or 6/8. I think one could also hear this as 4/4 with a 'triplet swing' feel.

This takes me back when I would listen to jazz wjzz in Detroit back in the 90s
been listening for 35 years.....never gets old
Thank you Yellowjackets. Been a fan since 1987 as a teenager. Your music has been a great influence and inspiration in my life. Thank you for my introduction into jazz.
One of the best songs ever for one of the best years of my life❤
I just love this song it’s so cool

That theme's more than 30 years old !!! And it's very much actual still !! Just love it .
This is Yellowjackets at the absolute top of their game with their all time classic lineup, it doesn't get any better than this!

Surf Wisely.
Bought this album in '91 after hearing a track played by a late night college DJ from Fort Wayne, IN. I haven't been the same since.
The mixed tempos at the beginning is the real talent. Very unusual to master like this. Captures the feel of the 80's.

Best song ever made hands down🎉
Just doesn't get any better than this.
You are now rocking with the best!

Un album straordinario!
Great artistry. I always come back to this entire album for solace and inspiration.
To me, 2:03 - 3:20 is one of the greatest moments in music ever. So much space and good taste.
Agreed!! One of my favourite piano solos ever, Russell Ferrante just kills it.
Classic era Jackets!

Jimmy Haslip is a very impressive bassist. One of my favoite Yellowjackets tune is Seven Stars.
knew this song my whole life my dad loves the early yellowjackets ....so sad this album is not on Spotify anymore!
The midi/digital music mixed with the real sax creates a powerful communication of passion! Lucky to spend my childhood in the 80s listening to it.
On a sailboat in the ocean with the music blasting!

Wow! Remember???
Listen this one and any songs from Checkfield would be a great combination 🙂
i heard this realtime, but now i know this has complicated texture at beginning (-_-).
and the theme melody is unison of sax and bass.
then the bass sound is? maybe synth lower zone.
beautiful song!
another verse, bass does as usual.

so maniac programming!
Is this a 6/8 (@0:00 - 1:24) into a 3/4 time signature (@1:25 - 2:03) ??..

nice

WOW.... I really don't understand why my Mom doesn't listen to YellowJackets anymore.
UPDATE: Just realized this song is 5 yrs older than me, WTF?
Where is this album?? It disappeared from all streaming services that I know of
Raw....
I think you forgot to mention Bob Mintzer in the credits?
yes!!!! I will never forgive myself
Uh, this was pre-Mintzer guys, Marc Russo who in my opinion was probably the best sax player ever.
This is the one and only Marc Russo on sax.
Marc Rosso sax

Una puta obra maestra y el Solo de Ferrante es para caerse de culo.
