  • I’ve been using my Nikon Z6II for Wildlife Photography for 8 months now, so in this video I explain and demonstrate how I’ve setup the Z6II and why I believe that the setting I use are a very good starting point for capturing wildlife images.

    Thank you so much. This was such a hugh help for me as I have less experience with wildlife photography. And I have the Nikon z6II and the Nikon 200-500mm lens which I am gonna put to use with a big smile after watching your well explained and informative videos. Again, thank you very much and keep up the good work. Happy shooting :) Kind regards from Kenny in Norway

    This is the body & lens combo I use too, haven't taken the 200-500 out enough yet but spring is finally here! Picked it up last December during Nikon and B&H holiday promos 🙂 It'll be my last F lens, while I wait for the 200-600 Z but really, no rush. Decided to go with a monopod and tilt head, for portability / ease of setup. I appreciate the tips here!

      You're very welcome and I use to use a monopod a lot, but these days because I take a lot of videos of birds as well I need a tripod.

    I use the exact same system that you've described. Z6ii with the 200-500 Nikkor. I also use almost the exact same settings that you mention. I've been tempted to upgrade to a Z8, but this Z6ii still amazes me and for the money, and given I'm not professional, I cannot justify.

    Thanks for the tips! You gave me several things to think about and to go change. DX mode is a very clever trick. I'm going to finally start using back button focus now. I feel that I can now leave my VR on even on a tripod, but I think that warrants more experimentation for my own lenses and what I'm shooting. The Z6ii brings so much to the party for an amateur like me, but getting the right settings for the right reasons will definitely improve my results.

    Thank you for a fantastic video. I have the exact same camera and lens as you, and have used it for birding a long time. I was wondering if you have changed any settings in the autofocus menu a3?
    Also I really often need experience that the camera focus on the background or just a couple of meters behind the subject. Is this also happening to you?

    • @CharlesNPhotography
      @CharlesNPhotography  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I use the A3 menu for Landscape Long Exposures and HDR Photography. I low light I have found that sometimes it will front or back focus, if it can't lock-on to a subject

    I seen a Nikon ambassador few years back & he suggested leaving VR on all the time (D810/ 200-500 combo). The only time I turn Vr off is when shooting the moon on a tripod & before I turn the camera off as suggested in the Nikon literature. Do you set up any of the C- buttons for changing the focus modes like going from 9 point Dynamic to Wide Area Small? etc. Great vid.

    • @CharlesNPhotography
      @CharlesNPhotography  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your comments, I use the i menu to change between Single Point, Dynamic area AF and Wide Area Small depending on where the birds is and what it's doing. For small birds in trees, I'll use Single Point, most of the other times I'll use Dynamic, but for birds in flight I'll use Wide Area Small.

    Hi Charles,
    I’m just at the point of getting into mirrorless Cameras from my old Nikon D 7100. Currently contemplating between the Nikon Z6ii, Canon R6ii and Sony A74. Would kind of like to stay with Nikon, but most reviewer‘s seem to imply that its auto focus is not up to the same level as Canon and Sony. Would you say that the Z6ii can do most of what you want in bird photography? I do a mix of photography from landscapes to macro to birds and am also getting more into video. Trying to figure which way to go here. Thanks

    • @CharlesNPhotography
      @CharlesNPhotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're really wanting to get into wildlife photography, then I would look at the Canon or Sony. I stayed with Nikon has I already had some FX lenes and my reason for buying the Z6II was for the awesome video capabilities of the Z6II.

    Hello Charles. Not sure whether you’re reading these comments after such a long time. Can you pls help with the process for locking aperture and shutter speed into U3 custom settings. For some reason my shutter speed keeps changing even though aperture is fixed and auto ISO is enabled. Cheers. Ed

    • @CharlesNPhotography
      @CharlesNPhotography  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Edward, I read and answer nearly all comments!
      > Put the camera dial in U3 mode
      > Set your Shutter Speed
      > Set your Aperture
      > Set the ISO to Auto
      > Go into the Menu > then Setup Menu
      > Go to Save User Settings
      > Select Save to U3 > Save Setting > Press the OK button
      That's it.
      Your settings should be saved.

      @@CharlesNPhotography thank you. V grateful. Quite a few other vloggers don’t reply at all, and within minutes👍. And, followed your instructions. All good. Now if only Nikon would allow the high speed continuous shutter release option to be saved in user settings also. Best wishes.

    Thanks for the content, your setting i-menu is a little bit confusing. On 6:55 it's starts with FX and on 8:15 it's starts with picture control. Also you've 2x FX and 2x release mode in the menu.

    • @CharlesNPhotography
      @CharlesNPhotography  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On 6:55 it's starts with Metering, Not FX! . on 8:15 it's starts with FX Not picture control.
      "Also you've 2x FX and 2x release mode in the menu." Yes I have 2 FX, but only 1 Shutter type. There's 12 items I can add to the i Menu, but I only need/use 8, so the other are just there to fill-up space on the i Menu.
