- Taking us back to 1986, Nike is set to launch this Air Max 1 that pays homage to the originals which featured a larger Air bubble, chunkier midsole, and a different looking upper. Back in the 80s, the original pairs were recalled and redesigned / relaunched with the smaller Air unit that we know today, but this retro is a nod to one of the best little known stories surrounding the iconic Air Max lineage ever told.

I totally agree. When I first saw the big bubble I was taken aback at the look and shape of the shoe. After seeing it a few times and remembering the history, I came around to accepting it for what it was. Waiting for my pair to arrive from the shock drop. Definitely an historic pair.
I never got an air max 1 and missed out on the 2017 release. I am glad that I patiently waited for something like this. This is the air max 1 returned to it's true, originally intended state. This is like the master sword or Ocarina of Time of sneakers to me. This is my grail and my first sneaker that I am doubling up on!
I don't see too much hype on these and that makes me happy. Hopefully an easy pickup cus these are a must cop.
It’s a good thing for people like us who love the shoes and can actually get them because there isn’t much hype. On the other hand, it blows my mind that their isn’t much hype on 1s’, 90s’, 97s’. Some of the greatest silhouettes of all time and they get looked over because there isn’t a jumpman or the latest collaborators name on it

This reminds me of when converse started to reissue their classic 1974 ox shape likewise when vans brought in the OG line with the thicker midsoles.

great video man, I've wanted these since I was a kid, and remember seeing the Big Bubble 86 version in stores when I was very small, at a now defunct Sports Store we had here in the UK called Hargreaves Intersport. I pestered my parents so much for em, even though I had kid sized feet and couldn't wear em anyway hahah!!! patiently waiting for my pair to arrive. I think for the older heads who knew the back story this is a must cop... new peeps can enjoy the retro nostalgia as well!!!!

Great review as always Sean! I’m geekin out for this pair, I decided to purchase these prior to release for little extra 💸 and may double up on these since we may not see this model for a while. I have to say Nike has come through with bringing back history with Jordan’s and now AM1 big bubble which has its distinct retro look that I welcome, but still enjoy the distinct details that make the AM1 87 look super clean. ✌🏼

The Big Bubble will take some getting used to but it’s one on my wish list and I’m glad to see it probably won’t be hard or expensive to pick up.

Yes, agree that they look jarring compared to the 87 pairs. However, this is the actual design that the sneaker godfather and maestro had intended and the 87 pair is an afterthought. That's crazy! This fact puts an unbelievable amount of stock on this OG pair which I can truly appreciate.

When it comes to Air Max’s I prefer 90s over 1s. I also prefer the more “Funky” color ways as opposed to the what I would call “Plain” ones.
But watching this review these are making me really want to go back and grab the Air Max 1 “Sketch to Self” (university red) joints and also think I prefer the 2017 version better.
Maybe a different color way might change my mind🤔

I really do love the 86 big bubble however....its amazing that with the background story people are amazed at this big bubble yet compared to some modern models this is still a small bubble

Hey Sean, is there any difference between the Men’s and Women’s sizes for these AM1s? I hit on 2 pairs both in Women’s sizing for myself and a friend. The SKUs seem different but hoping they’re the same sneakers otherwise
Not sure but if I had to guess womens may run a bit more narrow?

Hi Sean. For wide feet 2E, do you consider it still as slightly wide or really wide? I always try to use you sizing as a good reference 🙏🏻 On the fence on going TTS and half size up for these.

So heavy: 530g! The old one (554717-160) was only 380g. The AM1 big bubble are also much longer, around 1cm. The whole shoe seems just clumsy.

Ok so I wear a size 10.5 in my Jordan’s and new balances but for my air max 1s and 90s I wear a size 11 my anniversary’s are kinda snug on me sometimes ! But I just got my big bubble pair in size 11 and have more space than my anniversary’s in the toe box area can’t tell if I should do a size 10.5 or just stick with a size 11 for the big bubble ?????
This is one of those rare times when the OG is not better. If they could find the way to keep the 2017 shape,and add the big bubble it would be perfect!
These are perfect not sure how anyone can take issue with the big bubble it’s not a huge difference.
get them in-hand and you'll see how cheap the materials feel - like felt. colours are not consistent from heel branding to tongue tab. nike can and should do better for us customers
The problem with Air Maxes is the midsole is so dense and stiff. I did an experiment with my old Air Max 90 and removed the air sole unit and there was no difference with the step in comfort, it doesn't even bottom out without the bubble inside. If Nike really wants to modernize and utilize the "Air" in these shoes, they should make the midsole softer, so you can feel the springiness of the air unit. Otherwise it is just a gimmick.
Its a gimmick since day 1 😂
You certainly feel a difference compared to a shoe with no midsole or a stiffer midsole like leather, but its relative. I think air units inside really soft foam could offer a nice balance to sorta replace a dual density set up.
I think it only works if you are really heavy like how Power Forwards and Centers prefer shoes with air units instead of zoom units. Perhaps if you weigh around 230+ it makes a difference, it is likely that zoom units will bottom out for them and are used by smaller guards. For general release, they should really make the soles softer or have options like New Balances, but they're Nikes so it is likely they won't care as long as it sells.

Hopefully the hype ain't all that crazy when copping online. Especially Re-Imagined AJ3 and Lost and Found AJ1 it was near impossible to get online. Definitely need to double up these as its Tinker's OG design and how Nike is digging out Tinker's archive concept design since AJ3 "Swoosh" Concept few years back.

I got them 11.5 US. They definitely more snug than the Pattas but they fit me nicely still. I have rather narrow feet.

these run smaller/narrow and longer than the anniversarys ... i have a sz8.5 anni and thought going size 9 would be nice but they are narrow and long - 9.5 might be too long for me

@@deedash7033 bro def dont go half a size down... they are narrow... i really had to loosen laces to fit tts - but even then i feel like .5 up is good width wise... but these run longer than the anniversarys which is weird considering they designed with a wider toe box

Thanks for the sizing info. I've been size 10 for a snug fit in recent AM1. I was size 10 in the Anniversary pair. I should go 10.5 right?
If 10 in recent AM1 is actually snug for you then yes 10.5 is probably better for these. But if 10 in recent AM1 fit comfortably, I'd probably go 10 with these but they will be more of a snug fit if you're okay with that.
It actually this version it almost has that look of Nike Air Max SC Red.

I like the story but somehow i just don't like the big bubble and how chunky this design is. Their failure with the original design forced them to make a more subtle and overall much better looking shoe imo.

Disagree, the big bubble makes it more unique vs the played out minimalist bubble that's already synonymous with the AM90.

Air Max 1 is my favorite silhouette, love the story, can not stand how these look though, they lose the lifestyle aesthetic
The foam around the bubble just wouldnt last. Crumbles after a couple of years under tropical climate.
