one thing you have to know about china is there have been countless rebellions by all kinds of factions you can think of. some of it is religion, some of it political, some just simple feudal warlord origin. imagine what would your home country do if there was a mass rebellion. it's the same in any country - there's going to be conflict. chinese society is somewhat live and let live. it's tolerant towards everyone as long as you don't make trouble. islam came to china long after many centuries since the start of the silk road and settled in china. unlike the west with its many religious wars and crusades, there weren't issues until someone goes against the emperor or state in the case of today. this is what happened in xinjiang when separatist extremists engaged in terrorist activity. these extremists even targeted moderate uyghurs since most are not historically strict muslim. examples are their wine culture and dress code which is much more moderate than the hui muslims you met so far. unlike west which likes to drop bombs, the government solution was to build up xinjiang's infrastructure and economy to eliminate poverty which has historically been the root of discontent. in china, minorities are actually given special privileges compared to ethnic han chinese. for example they weren't subject to the one child policy which is one reason why the uyghur population increased while han population decreased in the past few decades. they are also given free vocational training and easier entry into universities. if you compare xinjiang now to 30-40 years ago or even to neighboring countries, it's not even close. the standard of living is much higher as well as life expectancy. even within muslim countries there have been separatist conflicts. there have been conflicts between muslim countries. you need to keep an open mind and realize nothing happens in a vacuum. most of the stuff you read in western media may have originally been based on a piece of fact, but twisted to be entirely propaganda fiction. compare to how you have been greeted and treated in china then go to the usa and see the difference.
