    It takes me around 3 hours to groom my Keeshond, and I brush them every few days. You are correct, this breed should never be shaved, only trimmed for health. He displays some issues that I see in my puppy mill rescues. You did a beautiful job Logan, grooming is not even close to easy, but you make it look effortless! 😉

      What signs? Someone gave me a Keeshond for free… he is very scared and skittish. He won’t even come out from under the bed 😢

    • @Mygreyhound15
      @Mygreyhound15 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @queenebony Keeshonden need to be in a home with routine and have a good amount of excercise. If your dog is hiding, most likely, it was a puppy mill dog or a kennel dog. It seems to have experienced some abuse before you. Maybe? Be careful for reaching into her hiding space. It can be triggering to her, and she could bite out of fear. Lots of soft voices, healthy treats, and just sitting next to her telling her a story or reading, sewing, emailing always helped my dogs. Think, "invite her to join your life, not force her to be in it." Try watching the channel "Sitting with Dogs" his methods are really kind and successful.
      Thank you for giving this dog a chance. If you need resources, let me know. Good luck, friend 💓

  • @SarahNotSara
    @SarahNotSara 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    As a Keeshond owner, you are 100% right with what you said about their coats etc. Sorry for sounding judgey but the owners are horrible if they're not brushing their dog weekly and checking through his coat for burrs etc. They're also morons for getting this kind of dogs coat shaved as it never grows back the same again and is even harder to brush properly. Not to mention the cancer risks for their pink skin. Really surprised that the dog was snarly as they're a super duper easy dog to train and do anything with usually, which makes me think the owners neglect it. Must be so frustrating for you at times trying to educate dog owners on basic freaking care and have them shut you down.
    Bravo to you for an excellent groom and being so patient. You're a diamond. 💟 from Australia (ie: a very hot place where my Keeshond thrives in summer)

    I love this longer content! I actually didn’t know that shaving a dog doesn’t really help them cool down during the summer. It’s really hard for me to afford regular (every few weeks) grooming appointments so knowing this I’ll probably trim him before his hair gets too long instead of letting it grow out for the winter and shaving it in the summer.

    This pup started out looking like the 100 year old dust bunnies you find under a bed and, Logan, I didn't know where you were going to go with this pup. I'm so impressed with the outcome you achieved. The owner should be glad you knew what you were doing because someone else would have just shaved the pup again. You really put in a lot of work. And it all paid off.

    Keeshonden have a very sensitive skin and are also very sensitive and nervous dogs, given they are bred for alertness and shaving is often therefor traumatic to this breed and can even set off alopecia. The growling sound they communicate is normally not about aggression but rather showing fear. Our Keeshond can even sound like that when he is truly enjoying himself during play but at the same time feeling a bit unsure of himself if we are doing something that feels new to him. They are usually afraid of things that makes them feel out of control. But since they have very low aggression they don’t often go to any physical stage like biting. Because they are naturally worried about any repercussion that may follow their chosen action. In essence they are smart enough to be afraid and worried. And calculate the outcome of their actions… Thy might mark that they would want to bite though. But will hardly ever follow through.
    Actually I would advice against also cutting the fur of a Keeshond as the tips of the fur needs to develop their points in order for their fur to become more manageable. And a lot of the problems that come from shaving these dogs comes from the fur not just growing out right. But also from the tips of the strands especially on the overcoat being blunt and not pointy. So cutting, even when done in all kindness to even the fur out - it is still better for a coat growing out to leave it as it is and just get out the matting and slowly comb it out. And then help the owners learn how to keep brushing the coat every week and preferably several times a week while the coat is growing out as that also stimulated the hair growth. If the coat is kept uncut the strands will eventually develop points either by themselves or by the next hair in the follicle growing out right. And since you cannot see which hairs have grown out right and which ones still have a cut of blunt tip - it’s better never to use the scissors on them. Except for maybe around their feet or back end of their legs close to the feet.
    Trying to keep as low a stress level as possible during a groom is also helpful. So better to charge for some extra time than rushing it through like here. I also advise against using brushes that are as hard as the rake you used here, as their skin is so sensitive. It often goes hand in hand with this breed. They either have a strong and well functioning coat that doesn’t matte very easily or they do have dry sensitive skin, dry coat and often then also get shaved for all the wrong reasons…
    Thank You though for pointing out the important fact that shaving a Keeshond due to warm weather really is not helpful for them at all. As it instead makes them much less capable to stay cool. Double coats is a natures development since the stone ages when these types of dogs ancestors began living with humans and needed to function in many different climates. Which means they have a temperation system built in their fantastic double coat. So it is better kept as it is and just helped by keeping it well brushed through all the time but especially during summer when the wind needs to be able to go through the coat and all the way to the skin.
    I wish people would stop saying about this breed that it is so easy to maintain their coats. As in a way it is. As you need not cut nor shave them. You do however need to brush them often and wash their coats once in a while during the year. And the brushing is essential in keeping their coats well maintained. As then it is also in a lot of ways pretty much self cleaning. But a matted Keeshond coat is much harder to deal with. I would go so far as stating that if continually brushing through the coat of your dog is not something you want to be doing when owning a dog - then a Keeshond is not the breed for you. Their coat is not maintained by going to the groomers a few times a year. But in need of a daily brush through for about ten minutes at least every other day… That helps the coat also become less dry as you then distribute some oils from the skin to the hairs which makes the coat look better. Regular brushing also helps the skin by stimulating it which also make them less prone to dryness, (even though some dogs of this breed are perpetually dry skinned. If yours is - increase the amount of fats in their food)
    For those who wonder about the name it is not pronounced like in this video, even though i truly understand why it happens…😅. But they have nothing to do with a French pie, even though they would love one if one was offered to them…😎
    The name really means K’s dog. And the letter K which is pronounced in Dutch pretty much as it is in English. Like “Kay”. Dog in Dutch is hond. Which is similar to hound. But if you think of the car brand Honda but remove the a at the end you get the right pronounciation of the last part of the breed name… That makes the pronunciation of the breed name end up like this: Kay’s hond. Ant that is what they are called. Keeshond. 😘

    I love the way you explain the tools and how you use them. I found it especially interesting when you said to train your brain I have been telling people that for years like when they ask how I can possibly bead on the bus (I make jewelry) keep it up I love everything I've seen. 🥰
