    I drove this once in a full size Bronco not realizing what I was getting into, from the Crusty Butt side. It was, without a doubt, the diciest road I have ever been on. I remember rounding the curve after Devil's Punchbowl and realizing a little ways further that there was no reversing and no turning around. God's good grace and amazing mercy I did come out in Marble. I only high centered once and was able to maneuver around it. But the drivers side wheels were on the actual very edge of the precipice and the passenger rear view was scraping the wall on that side. I will never do that in a full size vehicle again. Forest Service told me there was a man from Texas that tried to drive his Caddy over it and ended up at the bottom of the ravine. Had to pay for a helicopter to remove the vehicle and get special permission to do that.

      PS. At that time there were no warning sign and it was marked on the map as a 4WD road.... yeah, it was that.

    A GMC Jimmy went off the cliff at the Punchbowl back when I was a wee boy - only one or two people survived. (I spent summers in Crystal from 1967 to 1985).

    Awesome video, still remember this trail as a 11 year old kid. Wish you would have shown Crystal ghost town more. We stopped at the lil store there. It was raining really heavy and we go inside and I asked the lady if she had a bathroom and she said no but we have an outhouse. And I said what's an outhouse and she laughed and she said you'll see it's right behind the building right back there and she pointed through the window. So I run outside in the rain around the building get to the outhouse open the door and I got the most horrendous smell of an outhouse it was so bad I close the door looking out at the beautiful scenery behind the building's I took a leak standing in the rain. I'll never forget that memory or that smell lol. But there was a guy i think up the roade in Crystal who was working on a giant marble sculpture. He owned a crystal shop. It was so pretty with all the Crystal pendants hanging in the windows. I fell in love with Colorado on that trip.

    My husband and I drove from Crested Butte as far up as the bridge. Had lunch and headed back. Very scary ride if your on the side that drops down into the gorge. That was me going up and my husband going back down...then he understood why I was so scared. The road is barely wide enough for 1 vehicle.

    Very awesome video. Have only walked over the punchbowl because its way to scary! Grew up in CB. Live in Massachusetts now but my kids love the area. So misss it! Great Job! You, however forgot the hair raising part by Emerald Lake, and the car that is in the drink after the bottom of the bowl!

      Thank you very much, I'm glad you liked it. I grew up in Utah but love CB so we have a home there now. My wife gets out of the truck and walks past Emerald Lake because it scares her so much :).

    Funny - In the early 90s I picked up two hitch hiking girls on Schofield Pass road after coming up the punchbowl and heading back to Crusty Butt. Another time I picked up a member of the Israel Olympic shooting team near the bottom of the bowl who was scouting the road. What's up with all the hitchers on Schofield Pass?

    • @CurtConrad
      @CurtConrad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is pretty funny! At the time I thought they were just messing with us, because who would actually want to get on the back of a dirt bike? I did have the idea that they were Europeans, just out for a hike, but maybe they were actually hitchhikers. Anyway, I feel really stupid for misspelling Schofield! Thanks for watching!

      @@CurtConrad did you see that guy fall off into the punchbowl with his dirt bike? Video is here - gets interesting at around 4:30. th-cam.com/video/zlb8ic6ivcg/w-d-xo.html

      Lots of hikers going to and from the West Maroon trailhead to Aspen will hitchhike since the walk on the road is super long.

    • @CurtConrad
      @CurtConrad  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, you could run it in a Jeep. You could run it in a pickup too, I've seen it done, but most people wouldn't.

    how many miles is this? any road or trail numbers? going to be in that area here in a month or so and would like to ride it.

    • @CurtConrad
      @CurtConrad  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly it's been a few years but as I recall it's maybe 20 or 30 miles - easily doable on a tank of gas. As far as markings, I think it was pretty clear but I don't remember numbers. You just leave town past the ski resort on the main road until it turns to dirt, and keep going. Any signs point to Marble or Schofield Pass, also known as the Devil's Punchbowl. Enjoy, it's a beautiful ride!

    • @nathanmccreery914
      @nathanmccreery914 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I seem to remember it being 14 miles from the Devil's Punchbowl to Marble, but that was a long time ago.

    Dirt bikers are the most annoying people on the trail and have the most miserable manners at a camp its no wonder they get run over all the time. Drivers just quit minding them.
