I left a comment on here a while back bashing this guitar, but since I've posted I've upgraded the bigsby to a handmade in usa on in gold, and I also fixed the gorundwire and I'm so happy with it's sound. I play it all the time and have grown completely uninterested in my strat, the rockabilly sounds you can get from this guitar just blows me away
Awesome guitar, I have a 1973 Gretsch Chet Adkins Country Gentleman. Most Gretsch use filtertron pickups. Smaller than humbuckers. Gives that unique Gretsch sound. Now ya gotta pick up some Travis picking. 💘
Good to see you back, Mark. I don't deserve to have more than one guitar, but I have the cherry version of that one. I think it sounds good even unplugged.
Looks just like my G5420TG-59 it’s designed to be a replica of the 1959 6120 but Tim Pierce says it’s better than the 5120 he owned. He has a video called fat threats, low action, high-quality shred machines. Halfway through the video he gives out some information on the guitar as well as shredding it awesomely. The Bixby is intentionally a different color because that’s the way the 1959 6120 looked
I just bought bought my first Gretsch yesterday... dark cherry color! I absolutely love it! These guitars are really good for a lot of the songs by The Beatles.... (and many others).. thanks for the great video.
G5420T, same as mine, it's a post 2014 one so that isn't just an overall volume pot like on the pre 2014 ones, it's actually a tone bleed circuit so you can roll off the volume without changing the tone. Put it through a bit of slap back and a clean valve amp and you'll have that unique sound.
I have that exact model 5420TG awesome guitar looks feels and plays beautifully i have a number of other's inc Les Paul, banjo, 12 string acoustic and several 6 strings acoustics but man thats my favourite by far cool factor of 11 👌🇭🇲
weird story i played les pauls for years, eventually decided all my guitar heros were fender strat players, so i got a couple of strats, learnt how to play a strat like a strat however there was just something i was missing with a strat......so went out and could'nt resist buyin a gretsch.....it had that certain thing that the strat was missing, kinda like a cross in playability and tone of an acoustic guitar and a gibson les paul......but it lacked what the fender strat had, .....then i got my strat back out, and after 5 years of persevering on my strat trying to play it like i strat, for the 1st time i truelly appreciated my strats and started really playing it like a strats ment to be played!!!........gotta love the journey!!!.....now i have 2 awsome guitars that really compliment the other one and are a contrast of each other, cant wait to mix the sounds and tones in the studio!!!
I've ordered the semi-hollow Gretsch G5622T model in dark cherry finish :-) Update: I decided on the G5622 model (aged walnut finish) instead, as I don't normally use the tremolo bar :-)
Mark! I bought a Gretsch G2420T (Walnut stain). I've wanted a Gretsch since I was a kid and saw George Harrison playing a Gretsch Duo Jet Country Gentleman on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964! Any way, I signed up for your Jamorama classes, which are awesome, and I practice along with you everyday on my Gretsch guitar! I was blown away when I saw this video of you with your shiny new Gretsch and a "kid in a candy store" look on your face. Enjoy your new guitar and thank you for your inspirational teaching style, I'm like a kid again!
Dude that guitar is just dope I have the 5420t 140th anniversary model it’s the most used guitar I have covers everything the new filtertrons in her are stunning , my les Paul strat tele are redundant suits your playing style dude
I already had the 5420 in orange, but the140 was just too irresistible. I can not put it down. It’s the guitar I think about when I am away from home. 😂
Hey Mark ...shes lovely. its the model Id like if I ever get the loot together. I play a vintage super swede Hagstrom and got a cheap tele that Im going to do horrible things to to get an Ed Bickert tone out of it.......enjoy from Canada...cheers
I’m lucky enough to have 2 Gretsch guitars .. 1 is the bono signature green falcon (the goal is soul) and the 2nd is the G6228 jet black both stunning guitars and yours is beautiful and well wear .. you look so happy .. welcome to the Gretsch club 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Nice guitar! I’ve always been a Strat and Tele guy too. Have had my eye on a G5422 in blue and think I’m gonna pull the trigger on it. Total Beatles and rockabilly vibe that I’ve always been drawn to.
Really enjoyed the video! I was looking for one as I always loved the sound when the Covid 19 hit. One day I chanced upon Guitar Centers used page and there it was! A 2019 Gretsch Electromatic G5422T (double away) that's almost identical except color. Mines black with silver hardware! I called and it was the most pristine used guitar they'd seen. The owner brought it in, covid hit and there it sat while the store was closed. They opened again, called me and now it's mine! Not as far as Ca. to New Zealand, but from New York to Ca! You are totally correct on how they play! Your analogy was spot on! It certainly handles different than my Strat for sure!! Keep up the great music and may your guitar(s) never go out of tune! Peace!
Real nice I bought my first gretsch streamliner left handed from Amazon I love it such a nice guitar 🎸 great action strong sound on the amp 👍 really awsum I have eight guitars all made left handed this gretsch is my favorite
I have got my heart set on a Gretch G5422 Electromatic, I haven't decided on the colour yet. They retail for $1700 New Zealand dollars. My fender strat and Gibson friends tell me that the Gretch doesn't have much range or is limited in the type of sound. I have played a G5422 in my local music store, and they sound pretty good to me. I get into rockabilly and am starting to learn jazz, like 9th and 13th chords. I think that the gretch i swell suited to this type of music.
@@fposmith How do you set them up, do you have any recommendations, I have been an acoustic guitarist for several years, but are new to electric guitar.
Agree with the other comments. I play dream pop, reggae, jazz, blues, funk, indie rock with my gretsch. If you like that jazz tone, I recommend getting a pair of flat wound strings. : ) Cheers
I am blessed for choice - I have a '62 re-issue Gretsch G6119, a '63 (re-issue) Tele, and a 60th Anniversary Strat. My experience is the Gretsch is versatile. Well - enough for me, anyway. And the Gretsch is sooooooo good to play!
Hi from uk found your vid the gretch does this to us I’ve a electromatic 5422tg limited edition in black and gold love it keep playing and loving 🎵🎵🎵🎶🎶🎶👍
I have a GT for 27 Gretsch guitar and I love it. They are a beautiful instrument. Very easy to play sound really really good for the money you can’t go wrong. I love mine I’ve been playing for almost 50 years and I love playing guitar. I am mostly a finger style guitarist. This is this is one of the best guitars I’ve ever owned. I play mostly acoustic, but this one I really love it. It sounds kind of like an acoustic but with an electric feel what a great instrument I love it.❤ and you’re right it is a gorgeous looking thing. Mine is midnight blue with white trim with tombstone front markers and it is beautiful.👍🏼💖🎸😆😁😎
fenders and Gibsons were always the main attractions and then the reverse firebird or birdland hollow bodies Chuck Berry stuff but then each pro always had a gretsch in the shadows Bo Diddley and stills and young had the country gentleman white falcon wars. But the two guitar slingers that really brought the gretsch to the modern age were Brian setzer and Billy Duffy with the 6120 white falcon they got their signature models now. They really stole the limelight wedded by Reverend Horton heat
I love gretsch guitars i have a "solid" body Junior Jet and just put a deposit on a G5410T Hot Rod hollow body with the red filtertrons in matt black(Charcoal Grey) with a red pick guard sexy AF
@@MarkTheGuitarGuyChannel they are great guitars the G5410T Rat Rod is an awesome guitar got it this weekend my junior jet is a more affordable streamliner model a 2410
I'm like you man! I play it but can't tell you a thing about the tech parts at all. I play a Gretsch 2420 Streamliner which is the next step down from the one you have and very similar sound.
Love the fact you enjoy the product for what it is and you don't really care to know about the technical details. I'm a technical guy by trade, but i don't let that drive my pleasure in the hobbies I enjoy. Great video and I think i have flow by New Zealand on my way to Puerto Rico :)
I'm looking at getting a 5420t and think orange is the apex of classic colors for that guitar. I think having the volume low enough to hear a little acoustic sound is ideal..just like you did in th3 video. I have.maybe 20 instruments from baby grands, tru.pets, cellos, half dozen electric guitars, flat tops, classical, but no gretch :( ... yet :)
gunna buy this same model and color - after a lot of online searching & consideration - for my first foray into electic guitar world - I've been playing acoustic all my life 👌✅ 😀
I’m fairly new to playing, but absolutely love it. Been thinking for awhile to upgrade my epiphone les Paul special for awhile. It’s between this gretsch or a strat. Any advice from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
Wow! Advising on a guitar is always challenging, and what's in my head is probably not going to be helpful to a Epi LP player (my ears prefer 'airier' sounds, so single coils, or Filter'Trons). And I struggle to get a sound that ticks the boxes in my head, even out of really good LPs). So the best I can say is, play a few, think about them, play them some more, and then some more again, trust yourself, and make your purchase! I have a Strat and a Gretsch (and a Tele). It's the Gretsch that I gravitate to. I feel good even just standing with it strapped over my shoulder.
Yeh, I bought a lovely Strat, then a lovely Tele. But felt the calling for a Gretsch, queried a G6119 Tennessean. Like you, I can't put it down! ( I feel guilty about not playing the Strat & Tele enough!!)
I had always been taken with the one two punch of the Telecaster and the SG. About 5 years ago, I decided to add a big hollow body to the mix. I ended up buying a Gretsch 5420t in the regular orange stain. I understand exactly what you mean about it wanting to be played in a certain way. I cannot overstate how much I love this guitar, and I have had some high-end Fenders and Gibsons that cost several times more. But there's something about this beautiful instrument. Nice introductory video, great playing and I understand the fascination. I picked up a surf green Jet to go with the big hollow body and there could easily be another Gretsch or two in my future.
I would like to know how it's made inside and where it is made. Describe what is a center block is and just what it is. Also does the body have any ribs inside to support the body top or is the body completely hollow without any support? All I know is it sound very good when you play it.
If the question is Gretsch, the answer is YES!! Sounds great, dude. I’m a Strat & Tele dude m’self, and I just got one these orange 5420’s. Real different, but very cool!
Mark, absolutely love the Gretsch & I get the gold thing, alas I purchased the Fender Squire Strat 40th Anniversary Limited Edition & boy is it a gorgeous guitar & sounds amazing too. Have a look & you’ll know what I mean, all gold anodised. Mick
I have a Fender Squire Strat I got for $50 US that has been rebuilt and had added a Humbucker Pickup by a good friend who likes to rebuild guitars. It's black and ugly as sin. But it's mine. I think I am up to $200 on it but it's all I can afford for now. Had to wait to learn the guitar until I could retire. Family first. And now that I am retired? It's a big now what? Some day I will learn how to play it. Play one of my wife's favorite songs on it for her birthday or Christmas. Someday. I am glade I found your channel. I wish I had more money to play with. Oh and what a gorgeous sounding and beautiful looking guitar. Yes, Yes, Yes.....
So many great guys out there looking after the family first… And Career! Well done my friend. Why not treat yourself and get in touch and we can do a one on one that way we can chat more in depth. Nothing beats playing the guitar you can look at it all day long but nothing beats playing 🤓🤘🎸😎
Are these as big as an 335? I used to have an Ibanez AG95 (jazz box with smaller body) because regular hollowbodies seem too big for me. Thanks for sharing! :)
I recently bought a '22 Gretsch 5420 (I believe same as youre playing here, but I could be wrong). Love the music on the outro. I've not seen your videos before, nor am I familiar with you. Is that a song of yours, someone else's, or just some on the spot picking and chord progressions? Sounds awesome. CHEERS!
I have the same guitar, mate. Watching you play makes me want to go upstairs and grab mine. They're a joy to play, aren't they? I have just recently discovered your channel and have enjoyed catching up on your videos. As an aside, can I ask what size picks you use? I've got it in my head my strumming would be more fluid if I used a thinner pick. Anyways, keep the awesome videos coming. They're great!
I listened to a vid where a chap commented on how a certain pick finds you. A bit like Harry Potter's wand. That was my experience after trying a few. Mine is a (fairly heavy) Dunlop Ultex 2.0.
As much as I love my Gretsch, it's the music that really matters. Glad you found the Rick that got you playing, rather than having a Gretsch gathering dust! Rick make fine instruments.
I Had a similar thing happen to me. My Best Friend Just Passed away and left me one of these. G5420T in orange stain. I have a question Im normally a Tele/Strat guy. Whats a good pickup height for starters. I see5/64" but no mention if its fretted at the last fret.
Well friend you have the right color. That model is the G5420TG Electromatic, however that color is exclusive to Sweetwater, one of the best musical instrument stores in the United States in my humble opinion. Enjoy it, the years will pass and you will remember this comment because as I already stated, that model is exclusive to that store.
You can buy a golden bigsby no problem. I always feel super weird when someone does something super nice for me , like how that guy gave you his guitar. I would’ve shat myself easy . Lol. Btw Greetings from Los Angeles
I came back to guitar when I retired five years ago. As with anything I commit to, I attacked relearning with unrelenting gusto. Over that period as my skills developed, I accumulated eleven electrics and four acoustics. Now twelve electrics, I recently bought my first Gretsch to discover Gretsch is very me and where I wanted to be once I developed. Think George Harrison early Beatles leads, late 1950s Chuck Berry tones, Eddie Cochran & Rockabilly in general. In concert with that, unusually for a wannabe guitarist even at amateur level, I'm a left brainer so the kind of man who not just wants to, but needs to know (control) all the stuff that is irrelevant to you. That Orange Stain G5420TG is gorgeous in every sense. Surmising that particular one is Korean (Samick) made (coupla' tells, e.g. the silver PUPs and Bigsby on a TG) before Gretsch shifted production to China. The new 2022 G542XTGs are all gold finish, including strap buttons, B60 Bigsby and PUPS. The current ones also have more articulate alnico 4 (neck) & 5 (bridge) FT-5E Filertrons versus those in the Blackface Filtertrons on the one in your hands. Both sound great regardless. Enthused by your Gretsch enthusiasm, I feel similarly. I chose/bought mine for its particular twangy early Harrisonesque and Rockabilly tones rather than its aesthetic, but sincerely love the aesthetic into the bargain. Only thing I'm not fussed on are the vintage open back tuners, but they 'come with the territory' I suppose because a majority of the target demographic want them. I bought the G2422TG double cut version of yours -double cut a preference, in Walnut Stain. I loved all three available current G5422TG colours, but being a Harrison afficionado and a traditionalist or conservative in my aesthetic tastes, it had to be Walnut Stain as my poor man's wannabe tribute to his early guitars.
Hi Mark. I have the same guitar and love it. It is a custom G5120 electromatic. It is known as mismatched because it has a combination of silver and gold appointments. This is what attracted me to this model. This standard model has all silver appointments. The guitar is an updated version of the previous electromatic series. It has a smaller headstock. The volume control also has a treble bleed and it is fitted with Filter’Tron black top pick ups. You are a lucky dude it is a beautiful guitar and well regarded by critics. Totally agree with you about making you play differently. I am a blues guy but I am now hooked on Rockabilly.
Cheers mate... house arrived yesterday. It’s pretty big, so will have to clear some space in the garage for it mate. I think it’s bloody Australian though (overpriced if you ask me) 😂

Nice guitar! I’ve always been a Strat and Tele guy too. Have had my eye on a G5422 in blue and think I’m gonna pull the trigger on it. Total Beatles and rockabilly vibe that I’ve always been drawn to.
I was recently given a G5420 TG 50s and i love it.its the ltd edition model and sounds amazing.
Love the guitar! Gretsch makes an amazing guitar and I think it’s a great fit for you and your style. Thank you for sharing.
A Gretsch is well suited for every kind of music ! You just have to know how to set it up !
: ) Cheers
@@gsf67 I have a Gretsch my luther delivered it with flat wound strings and recommends flats.
BRO! Well done on the Chris Isaac impromptu!!! I was totally thinking Chris Isaac that whole time.
Yeah now I just have to sound like him right?
Just bought a Gretch Electomatic used. It's a beauty, Deep red with a patterned metal pickguard. Still trying to figure it out.
Hi from uk found your vid the gretch does this to us I’ve a electromatic 5422tg limited edition in black and gold love it keep playing and loving 🎵🎵🎵🎶🎶🎶👍
2007 5420t tobacco burst. Love it
Gorgeous guitar! I’m seriously considering one right now!
Still to this day, the most versatile guitar ever
Hmmm...not sure I'd agree with you there - as I'm sitting this with my 5420 on my lap and plugged in.
Telecaster is probably the most versatile guitar. And I collect Gretschs.@@PaulSter
Mine is midnight blue with white trim with tombstone front markers and it is beautiful.👍🏼💖🎸😆😁😎
also Mark check out Brian setzer rock this town......that's where Im taking that beauty when I get one
fenders and Gibsons were always the main attractions and then the reverse firebird or birdland hollow bodies Chuck Berry stuff but then each pro always had a gretsch in the shadows Bo Diddley and stills and young had the country gentleman white falcon wars. But the two guitar slingers that really brought the gretsch to the modern age were Brian setzer and Billy Duffy with the 6120 white falcon they got their signature models now. They really stole the limelight wedded by Reverend Horton heat
Yeah Billy took the white falcon and made it perfect, he perfected it.
I love gretsch guitars i have a "solid" body Junior Jet and just put a deposit on a G5410T Hot Rod hollow body with the red filtertrons in matt black(Charcoal Grey) with a red pick guard sexy AF
Dude I’m jealous! I was thinking of maybe getting a solid body at some point too
@@MarkTheGuitarGuyChannel they are great guitars the G5410T Rat Rod is an awesome guitar got it this weekend my junior jet is a more affordable streamliner model a 2410
Got the same guitar i just changed the pickups to tv jones brian setzer and knobs to dice
I have.maybe 20 instruments from baby grands, tru.pets, cellos, half dozen electric guitars, flat tops, classical, but no gretch :( ... yet :)
gunna buy this same model and color - after a lot of online searching & consideration - for my first foray into electic guitar world - I've been playing acoustic all my life 👌✅ 😀
I like the blue one...!! yeah there are beautiful like a piece of art work .......!!
If I only knew how good Gretsch guitars were I would have bought one sooner . So versatile , superb sound and can’t put it down
Yeh, I bought a lovely Strat, then a lovely Tele. But felt the calling for a Gretsch, queried a G6119 Tennessean. Like you, I can't put it down! ( I feel guilty about not playing the Strat & Tele enough!!)
@@cass2771 ha ha so very true 👍
@@MarkTheGuitarGuyChannel I would love that. How would I reach you? And how much.
Are these as big as an 335? I used to have an Ibanez AG95 (jazz box with smaller body) because regular hollowbodies seem too big for me. Thanks for sharing! :)
Hi Got the same guitar and agree with you lovely well made instrument however yours sounds much better can you tell me what Amplifier your using
It’s actually a tiny little beast of an tube amp from Laney! It’s a Laney Cub 12r.. you’ll see more of it in future. It’s so good yet so small.
My favourite pick is a Jim Dunlop .88 (green) but I can use anything above a .66 I recommend starting on a nylon .66 with grip and being “feathery”
I listened to a vid where a chap commented on how a certain pick finds you. A bit like Harry Potter's wand. That was my experience after trying a few. Mine is a (fairly heavy) Dunlop Ultex 2.0.
I had a beautiful Gretsch. For me it was a wall hanger. Just was not my style for playing. Traded it for a Rickenbacker.
You found the right fitting guitar in the end my friend!
As much as I love my Gretsch, it's the music that really matters. Glad you found the Rick that got you playing, rather than having a Gretsch gathering dust! Rick make fine instruments.
I have a G2255 and it’s amazing
the Gretchs really went to town on their various git boxs tried on
Great! Can you measure the nut width on yours? Thanx
I enjoyed playing it when I came to visit you.
You played it too yeah?
I think with the gold fittings, it's a G5420TG.
Yes, it's a G5420TG OS (Gold fittings and Orange Stain).
I Had a similar thing happen to me. My Best Friend Just Passed away and left me one of these. G5420T in orange stain. I have a question Im normally a Tele/Strat guy. Whats a good pickup height for starters. I see5/64" but no mention if its fretted at the last fret.
I’ve got no idea lol... I tend to adjust and test until I’m pleased with the result... not terribly scientific but makes me happy:)
No, No zero fret on these. Only on the vintage pro series.
That Great Gretsch Sound
I keep seeing this video of the vampire looking at a Gretsch. Then realized it was a tile design behind him.
Looks amazing..
Awesome sounding guitar 🎶💃🎶💃
It’s a reflection upon you that someone would gift you such a beautiful guitar. Enjoy!
Now that you pointed it out, it's starting to bug me - why isn't the Bigsby gold?
Oh wait - maybe it's the Limited edition?
Love gretsch. Great job
Hi Sr.Mark,What song title at 5:32 ?
Wicked Game, Chris Isaak
Hell yesss.... Love those guitars
I having been deciding between this and a Gibson.
Get both 👍
The Thirsty Goose That was easy. 🙂
@@bonniem5384 Hahahaha I'm 16 guitars deep in my collection from using that exact process.
The Thirsty Goose it’s an addiction for sure. 😁
@@thethirstygoose398 Me too... my girlfriend is ready to kill me..lol
Okay, that’s cool. I want that guitar.
What model us that

SO SO SO SWEET!!!!!

What was your buddy's dream guitar?
Suits you mate...love it
Mark you gotta do a hallelujah cover! Your voice is perfect for that song!
I cry too easy when I hear that song 😩
I have a 6120 Chet Atkins Cadillac green. I' ll send you the guitar if you can make me play like chet in one years time.;)
You can buy a golden bigsby no problem. I always feel super weird when someone does something super nice for me , like how that guy gave you his guitar. I would’ve shat myself easy . Lol. Btw Greetings from Los Angeles
Yeah I’m super lucky... he lives in LA also. We do regular guitar lessons via Skype every week. So cool to be a part of someone’s guitar journey.
Mark The Guitar Guy - very very kool 👍🏽
Hi did you know this is a limited edition?
Fantastic.
I've got the GRETSCH 5420-T. I don't know what the "T" or "TG" means...Anyone?
T for tremelo g for gold
Love my Gretsch
G5420TG amazing
Hi Mark. Pls let me know your shipping address. I'd like to mail my house to you.
Cheers mate... house arrived yesterday. It’s pretty big, so will have to clear some space in the garage for it mate. I think it’s bloody Australian though (overpriced if you ask me) 😂
