    I met Helio in 95 at Relson's Dojo at the University of Hawaii. I was so honored at the time to watch Helio teach in Portugeese, with his sons Relson, Rorion, and Royce translating for us. And then the celebration of the new dojo near Hanauma. I have a great photo of Helio and I right after my first tournament at UH. Awesome memories. Humble Gratitude.

      Humility ? 😂 He presents himself as the best fighter in the world, says that japanese jiu jitsu is nothing compared to brazilian one, lies about how the fight with Kimura actually happened. You call that humility ?

    With all due respect to Gracie, Kimura defeated Helio Gracie . Both are great masters , Kimura won the fight but Gracie left a great legacy.

      @@patricklutherwinchester4260 im glad you asked: marketing, not their martial arts. Because Royce's messy UFC cheating and failed drug test stories are more entertaining than honest fighting. And because Carlos Gracie was a polygamist with like 250 grand and greatgrandchildren lol. That name is going to bounce around a lot based on that alone. The more I see of BJJ, the more I learn, and the more of these interviews I watch, the more bs I think it is. Imagine taking a fraction of something else and calling it "complete" or "well balanced" lol. Only thing I give the gracies credit for is popularizing Newaza

    Winning can make you a great person. It also can destroy a great person. Losing can also do the same. I'm listening to this Great Man, and I'm also listening to a man who hasn't come to grips with a loss. I do admit its a bitter pill to swallow. To say your style is so good the only way you'll lose is if you make a mistake is NUTS. Or better yet HORRIBLY ERROGANT..But I do understand its what you need to keep winning sometimes. Especially after such a tremendous loss.

    A great man. Not afraid to do things his as he sees them to be true. As far as what he said about Rorion...Who knows. I say that at Helio's advanced age he doesn't seem to be senile. He seem to speak articulately and lucidly. Also once men of standing reach the sunset of their lives they become brutally honest because they have no reason to save prestige for the future. They feel they are reaching their day of reckoning and they want to go as honestly as possible.

    • @stephenmoss8754
      @stephenmoss8754 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +puckdrummer -- Exactly, it's Rorion and his son's that are doing the online training yet he uses him as the example of not going that. Strange. I wonder if he had his full faculties at that age and or, or he was really aware of what everyone in the family was actually doing in real life. Does anyone know when this was recorded?

    • @stephenmoss8754
      @stephenmoss8754 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Stephen Moss -- Just to clarify my comment - Ryron and and Rener's online training is very useful but even they admit that it's better to complement it with real training in an academy when possible. Also - to get real belts they need to test with him in person. The belts people get via online only training are like placeholder belts.

    • @puckdrummer
      @puckdrummer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      agreed.

    • @ayoubhr77
      @ayoubhr77 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stephen Moss I really doubt he was aware about every single detail on what everyone was doing. I mean, he was on his 90s, probably the elder guys like rickson, rorion or royce would respect him fully and ''let him know about anything'' because they grew up with him when he was still strong but the younger ones... yeah, the respect and that's it. That kinda slips from a generation to another one.
