My favorite part about this song is that an instrumental version of the main melody is part of the original movie's soundtrack. The lyrics add so much more to the song's meaning, and every time I listen to it I get chills. Disney composers are geniuses.
Most of Disney's Broadway shows do that. I noticed it first with Beauty and the Beast...the beginning of "No Matter What" was a variation on a melody that shows up in the instrumental soundtrack of the movie.

I think this song actually highlights something very poignant about the whole plot. The Lionesses, from the moment Scar took control of the Pridelands, have been through absolute hell. Forced to overhunt, abused and neglected, enduring endless cruelty and misery for years on end. Nala has grown up in it, and it has stripped away the happy care-free cub she once was. When Nala decides to leave, to find help, to the other lionesses she is their last hope, their hero, daring to go off and do what all of them wish they could. This song captures that feeling so perfectly! Almost makes me a little annoyed that Simba just kind-of "shows up" at the end and gets all the credit XD
Donovan94 that’s how it is for most prides. Although the females hunt, the males are first to eat. The males main goal for the pride is to keep reproducing and to protect the pride from other enemies. So it kinda falls in line when Simba comes back to overthrow Scar because in reality there will always be another Lion to come and overtake the pride.
Donovan94 although I completely agree with your point on the crisis the lionesses endured under the leadership of Scar and the role Nala played in their salvation, I wish you hadn’t added that last sentence about Simba. Since he’s the protagonist of the story, we as the viewers have the responsibility of investing our hearts in him and celebrating his glory, regardless of the circumstances. Besides, it’s not like Simba didn’t undergo any challenges. Despite the false guilt & fear he was feeling, he ultimately decided to do the just thing by fulfilling his father’s will and claiming his birthright, risking his life in the process. Also, let’s not pretend Nala didn’t get her due. She became queen and mother to an heir, which is an indescribable honor, far more than one could ever dream of. There is no flaw in how the ending was written. Since Simba is the protagonist and the titular character, we can’t complain about him getting a good portion of the spotlight & praise. If someone other than him were to be sung as the hero, it would be a relative of his. His family tree moved the story.

This song is what every Healthcare worker is feeling about our jobs eight now. Seeing the whole system just fall apart and quit and feel like we are abandoning our patients is the saddest thing I have lived through and this song conveys this to me.
I was watching a review of the remake in which the reviewer lambasted the film for not including this song. I had never heard it, so I came to TH-cam to find it. I'm glad I did, because, my gods, this is brilliant...
For some reason, this song reminds me of refuges. When she says “shadowland, this was our home” it reflects the place called home that people lose through the world, “the rivers dry, the ground has broken” it represents people who don’t have any recourse to live and have to move to live, “I cannot stay here my family, but I will remember my pride” it represents the people who have to leave their family or their home to find more opportunities to help themselves and their families, “I will return (take you some far away, always remember your pride)” it represents the people who return always to their families but have to keep going forward on another place to help them... that is my opinion. Sorry for my bad English 😒
This might still be the most powerful and moving song I've ever heard. Leaves me in tears every time. Going to see the remake today and it sucks that this isn't in the movie. But if it was, I'm 100% sure I would start to cry in the movie theater, too.
I really love how they incorporated a few of the famous instrumental moments from the film into this song. I also feel like this is how a lot of people felt at the beginning of the pandemic. I sure did.
The feels I get from this song are real, so real! I get these chills everytime I hear the melody alone. It's so haunting, yet so beautiful, and the singers just top it all off so beautifully.
I saw The Lion King for the first time last night and I'm not afraid to say that this song/scene brought tears to my eyes. It was one of the most moving performances I have ever seen.
Such a beautiful melody from the original and excellently arranged and performed in this song. Haven’t listened to it in a few years and I always manage to shed a tear when I do.
Also, the obvious dual meaning of remembering your pride (family) and pride (dignity) I think is very poignantly expressed in this setting of the words to the music.
I was in a junior production of Lion King and it was so weird and so emotional to have this song after Hakuna Matata, especially when I had to sing it.
Listening to stuff like this makes me feel kinda empty in spots lmao. I don't have a great bond with my family and usually I don't think much about that, but sometimes I'm reminded of the amazing love and bonds within other peoples' families and it's like "huh, guess I'm kinda missing out"
I saw this today in Vegas. Since the time I've seen it in London (9 years ago), I have yet again been amazed at the dedication, the talent, the choreography, EVERYTHING. This musical was beyond belief. I would have no problem watching this performed over and over again. I myself want to audition for this outstanding musical, as well as others. I want to extend my thanks to all of the performers, orchestra/conductors, and producers for making this musical come to life for all to see! :)
This musical was the very first I saw live. I saw it last summer in London during a school trip and I was so excited. The set was amazing, the costumes as well, the actors were phenomenal and this was one of the songs that hit me so hard. I wish I could go see it again. To be honest, I don't think I can enjoy the movie as much as I did the musical. I will just miss the extra songs such as they live in you and shadowland.
This is definitely my favourite song in the musical. Saw the Sydney production a couple of months ago and I've listened to the soundtrack pretty much every day since. I absolutely loved every minute of it. Will make sure to see the musical again when the production comes down to Melbourne next year.
It's a shame that when they were filming a new scene for the special edition of The Lion King, they couldn't have put in this one. Or "Endless Night". Or "He Lives In You." Instead, they went with "The Morning Report"...nice, but nothing more than a cute throwaway. According to Jim Hill, that's because they wanted a scene that could be easily put in and taken out without having to re-animate or re-touch any already existing scenes.
i hate the morning report song, it doesn't really go with the flow imo. I can understand with not wanting to spend more time adding a song but still...
We all know that if Beyoncé sang this as Nala in the remake, it would have been a showstopper and easily the sole reason to even see it in the first place. Why Disney never went for it is beyond me.
My school’s doing the Lion King Jr and I got cast in the play. The whole cast came together early on to listen to the whole soundtrack and this is basically everyone’s favorite.
I'm Nala in our play and my voice is the only high voice you hear. Nala is such a great character because shes so strong like if I was her I would be dead.
We did this for a school production, and while this recording is absolutely stunning, the Nala in our production was SO. FREAKING. GOOD. Basically, I think that while this is a really great recording, there truly is something extra about a live performance. Btw, this is my absolute favorite song in the whole show

This song is so beautiful! I remember hearing it when I saw the show when I was six and literally crying. I asked my choir teacher if we could sing it in spring. Luckily, I got Nala's lines! :) Either way, great song, great movie, great musical.
I always get chills down my back whenever I listen to this. I might do this for my school because we have to sing a Disney song in my voice/song class. I'm in 7th grade and I'm an alto female.
There’s a scene in the Lion King (2019) where Nala is escaping Pride Rock and leaves to find help. This remake felt too short and I think they should’ve added ‘Shadowland’ right after she runs away from Scar with Sarabi and the Lionesses singing. This and new elements would’ve made this remake less short.
I got to play Nala in a Jr version of the Lion King. I feel so honored that I got to sing this. It took such a long time to not cry when I was singing.

I heard this song in the disney princess concert and loved it since!
For this, they just had to animate nala and the other animals singing.
He lives in you was on lion King 2
seeing the play in real life I am not ashamed to admit a tear did form in the eye of mine the magic of live performance touching the heart
This makes me miss Africa and Uganda deep inside my bones!
My home and where my heart is.
My Africa - Nakupenda nyo!
OMG!!!!! Its like excitement and emotions taking over each time I listened it.
This song makes me cry ughhhhhh I LOVE IT!!!!
This song gave me extreme chills
We're doing this for my school chorus and *I got the solo!!!* It's so beautiful, honestly.
This song is so much fun to perform with my theatre group. It gets a great respond every time and the girl who songs the main line is amazing.
This is amazing they should have put it on the movie
it was actually in the movie..just instrumental (mufasa's death) it was played :/
OH SHIT ITS ME! She meant the song itself. The Broadway version.
What kind of sociopath puts Beyonce in The Lion King remake and doesn't include this amazing piece? What a missed opportunity
Marjorie Ikr? It's like the only people that remembered that they had Beyonce in their movie was the people advertising the movie.
I remember going to the broadway show a few months before COVID began and it was my highlight of 2019
This is all I want in the remake. Please put this song in the new movie!
All I know is BEYONCÉ better be singing this in the live action version!!! Hearing her singing this beautiful piece will bring tears to my eyes. 😭
I think she is
i also hope its in there
when they really cut be prepared out i need somethign else to enjoy
Only 4 of the original songs are staying. It's doubtful that this will be staying in the live action.
@Lindsay Toppin that's not the real soundtrack.
So wonderful. Seeing this play was one of the most amazing moments of my childhood.
Favourite song in the soundtrack!! This musical brought me to tears last week!!
went to see it today. i've been waiting all my life. it was amazing!!
I recognize the old melody from the Lion King movie instrumental althouh I have never seen this musical although I would love to!
You should see the musical someday, it is definitely good and worth it! :)
Ikr same. I think I just fell in love...
Danielle Shearer The musical is really epic. It made me cry all over again.
I haven't seen the musical either, but that instrumental bit makes me want to cry every time.
in-He.
This song always gives me chills. So fantastic. Great voices and emotions.
I'm Nala in our play and my voice is the only high voice you hear. Nala is such a great character because shes so strong like if I was her I would be dead.
I still remember when i was young i watched the musical live in Hamburg. It was awesome and i rly wanna watch it again❤
1:40 this section is my favorite
Where has this song been in my life?!
I REALLY wish i could watch The Lion King on Broadway when in comes here in March/April, it saddens me that i can't as far as i know...
Seattle, yeah?
yup!! The last time they were here was 5 years ago i believe and i missed it then too
***** I suppose but its a tease when you can never afford it. That really sucks you're so far away!! I hope you get a chance to watch it!!!!
**cries silently in a corner**
this is my favorite musical and every time i listen to an epic song from The Lion King i cry :(((
We did this for a school production, and while this recording is absolutely stunning, the Nala in our production was SO. FREAKING. GOOD. Basically, I think that while this is a really great recording, there truly is something extra about a live performance. Btw, this is my absolute favorite song in the whole show
Yes?
Fatshe leso lea halalela,
Fatshe leso lea halalela,
NALA
Shadowland,
The leaves have fallen ,
This shadowed land,
This was our home,
The river's dry,
The ground has broken,
So I must go,
Now I must go,
And where the journey may lead me,
Let your prayers be my guide,
I cannot stay here, my family,
But I'll remember my pride, *
I have no choice,
(My lands) I will find my way,
(Tear-stained) Lea halalela,
(Dry lands)
(Take this) Take this prayer,
(With you) What lies out there?
(Fatshe leso) Lea halalela,
And where the journey may lead you,
Let this prayer be your guide,
Though it may take you so far away,
Always remember your pride,
Fatshe leso lea halalela,
Fatshe leso lea halalela,
RAFIKI (Chant)
NALA
Fatshe leso lea halalela,
NALA/CHORUS
And where the journey may lead you (me),
Let your prayer be your (my) guide,
Though it may take you (me) so far away,
Always (I'll) remember your (me) pride,
Giza buyabo, giza buyabo,
(Let this prayer be your guide) I will return, I will return, Beso bo,
(Though it may take you so far away) Giza buyabo, I will return,
(Always remember your pride) Giza buyabo, oh giza buyabo,
NALA
Beso bo, me people, beso bo.
Shadowlands isn’t in the Lion King reamke, let’s boycott
no one likes my sayings Let’s do it!
I was hoping it did when I saw it...I was pissed. Plus...IT'S NOT LIVE ACTION!!!!!
Luciano Alonso If they remake the lionking 2 they need it make it have facial expressions. It’s a very emotional film and without facial expressions it will fall apart.
@@crashban4t.f.s.b783 if there's one cartoon of theirs I would like to see them remake, it would be Hercules. And if so, either Tom Cruise or a WWE superstar like The Miz should play Hercules.
well, the instrumental plays in the fight scene.
Why couldn’t Disney put this in the special edition of the original Lion King? It would’ve been amazing and gave Nala her own song
Gives me goosebumps and brings me to tears every time. So beautiful and powerful. Just fantastic.
Just finished my school's production of The Lion King Jr. As a lioness, I'm sad I won't get to perform this beautiful song again.
I was a lioness too! #twinning😂
Just-me?
Rachael Baldwin I was Sarabi a couple years ago. I wish I could perform the song again
This song is so beautiful! I remember hearing it when I saw the show when I was six and literally crying. I asked my choir teacher if we could sing it in spring. Luckily, I got Nala's lines! :) Either way, great song, great movie, great musical.
I have to learn this song for choir and I just love it
My choir is also doing this song XD its so good
Oh hey Lucy hahahahahaha
Hahahaha Omg XD
My dance studio is doing Lion King, and we're not including this song. It makes me so mad! It's my favorite out of the whole show.
Should have had this in the Imax release instead of the stupid "Morning Report".
true
Yea the morning report was stupid and uncalled for. I hated it!😑
misspinkpunkykat morning report is great
misspinkpunkykat oh fuck that song.
in?
This song shouldn't have dislikes it's so emotional and its perfection
I always get chills down my back whenever I listen to this. I might do this for my school because we have to sing a Disney song in my voice/song class. I'm in 7th grade and I'm an alto female.
Just saw this show last night, and it was the most amazing thing EVER.
I saw this show a few days ago, and this song gave me goosebumps. It still gives me goosebumps.
GOOSEBUMPS why you come back
There’s a scene in the Lion King (2019) where Nala is escaping Pride Rock and leaves to find help. This remake felt too short and I think they should’ve added ‘Shadowland’ right after she runs away from Scar with Sarabi and the Lionesses singing. This and new elements would’ve made this remake less short.
The Awesone Bat EXACTLY!! So disappointed that they didn’t include it in the live action
Saw it in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Beautiful! I cried so many times...
I can't wait to perform this play! I play Ed and this is my favorite song, even though I don't get to perform it.
Whats up ed! Im scar in my school's musical:)
I got to play Nala in a Jr version of the Lion King. I feel so honored that I got to sing this. It took such a long time to not cry when I was singing.
i am preforming this song with my choir tomorrow at school, this is such an amzing song (:
I saw this in Chicago some time ago and I this is my favorite song from the entire soundtrack! It's sorrowful yet so beautiful. I wish this song was in the actual movie, not the Morning Report.
i remember when my mom brought home this album all though years ago i was so excited. i recently saw this show for the second time a week ago.
Doing this song for in my marching band show this year!!!!!!!! So excited
