    The car in front was Jamie Davies driving the Veloqx R8 #88, leading the race and pulling away from Allan McNish driving the R8 #8. Davies pulled out a 30+ second lead over McNish during the first few hours of the race before McNish and Lehto crashed entering the Porsche curves. Davies set the fastest race lap and finished second overall along with his team mates, Johnny Herbert & Guy Smith. Team Goh, Audi R8 #5 won the race with drivers Tom Kristensen, Rinaldo Capello and Seiji Ara.

    @Speedy
    I remembered this race too. Happened around 5:30 pm in France (11:30 am on the US East Coast). One of the GT cars spit oil, McNish and Lehto hit it quickly. Lehto managed to keep going losing many laps to repair the car. McNish must have sat by his car with a concussion for almost 20 minutes. The whole right front suspension askew, skid plate everything, took Allan a little while because he was driving hurt, coasted for around 5 minutes but he managed to bring the car and resigned from the race while his teammates Frank Biela and Pierre Kaffer, upon complete repair work to the suspension, traded hands for the next 20+ hours. I think they initially only lost like 20 laps but they might have a few more issues and totaled the laps behind to 29 and they recovered from 47th overall to 5th in the 20 hours. That's how well the car performed even as bad as it was and what repairs they needed to make.

    Definitely the Audis R8's look so much better than the bulky R10's

    Love that sound sooo much better than the "no sound" out of the diesel. But it seems to work!

    sadly, for today's car people (especially teenagers) the r8 is a supercar and not the best ever le mans prototype...

      blame it on Audi for naming the R8 the R8, but tbh I don't blame them for naming one of their car after their greatest Le Mans car

      Not really for me.
      I'll always remember as a race car before.

    My guess would be Tom Kristensen,the only driver that McNisch couldnt "catch" in 2004 at lemans:-)

    @LaterzMcGhee I have never tought about that, I agree with having no feel. But what you have to understand is that steam engines maybe have more feel than modern combustion engines. new technologies open new experiences, having a more direct feel is something very desirable, it really pushes your reflexes, you can reach new performances, you loose on the" feel the engine" part but you gain on the "feel the performance" part. the factor: maximum torque immediatly after 0 rpm says alot :D

    It's one of the Veloqx Audi's so it's one of these chaps:
    Jamie Davies
    Johnny Herbert
    Guy Smith
    Allan McNish
    Frank Biela
    Pierre Kaffer

    I think they should race with R10 in La Sarthe(more straights),
    And with R15 in ALMS. (More corners)
    Cause the handling is better in R15 then the R10, but the speed in the R10 is useful to gain valuable seconds in the long and speedy curves in La Sarthe, so it doesnt need the full agility of the R15.

  • @zytekfan
    @zytekfan 17 ปีที่แล้ว

    Found a tiny picture, but in the video it is indeed Allan McNish.

  • @vivaSchumi7
    @vivaSchumi7 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    the r8 is a lot like the lmp2 porsche's, nimble, and audi said that the r10 and 15 are made with only le mans in mind, and the r8 was 4 years old.

  • @jh5kl
    @jh5kl 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @deggis4 there might be a need to choose if electric engines arrive. thats why I said that. there has been allready a choice, diesel or petrol. I am not saying loud noise isn t nice and that people don`t care about the sound. but faster is the thing.

    Missed this old girl - rocket launched Audi Sport to 3 factory victories, 2 privateer wins. She'll go down in history as the most winning car probably in Audi's time to win Le Mans on the same design 3 years in a row and 5 overall. Audi R10 only won 3 times before the upgrade. The Audi R15 was a disaster due to its last of testing with Le Mans rules in 2009 - best a 3rd with little practice. the plus won with a vengance in 2010, 2011 - the R18 kicked butt and later its baby sister the R18 EQ shamed the world after Peugeot's departure, 2013 - R18 EQ won twice. The 2014 it will be R18 EQ again but it was already tweaked, so that doesn't count.

    • @ccx806
      @ccx806 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I felt that the 2010 victory was due more to the technical issues faced by the Peugeot cars rather than the outright speed of the Audi R15+

    • @germanenglishengineer2054
      @germanenglishengineer2054 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ccx806 Oh definitely. No doubt. Peugeot's car were faster overall, but not in an endurance pace. Audi proved that at 7:30 pm local time in France when all three teams put their foot to the floors upon being lapped once. That's when Audi said to Peugeot, "alright boys, let's see what you got. You lapped us once. You're not lapping us again."

    • @ccx806
      @ccx806 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joshua Ratz I wonder what's gonna happen this year. From what I've seen in Silverstone and Spa, Toyota has the fastest car. Porsche's car seems fast but also has a bunch of technical faults. But like you said, Audi should have the superior reliability. They're probably gonna use the same ploy they used in 2010 to try and achieve win #13

    • @deggis4
      @deggis4  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ccx806 About Peugeot's failures: yes, but then again Audi's better pace in the race forced the Peugeots to run faster and the stress was too much for the conrods which were later revealed to be the cause of the engine failures.
      But still, three of the Peugeots DFN'd for exactly same reason, so this race was an anomaly, so I agree with your overall point.
      I also remember that root of the conrod issue started already before the race: the ones they used were new and made of titanium. Originally they wanted to use them in only two of the cars, but a manufacturing error of the old steel ones forced them to put the new ones in all of the cars. (iirc, source: Autosport interview from 2011).

      I'm sorry, but you are wrong. As a racing fan, I would ban electricity from any competition. Electric is the end of the cars as we know (and love) them.

    the r15 is faster actually mate because with a v10 they can position the engine lower and easier aloowing more room for aerodynamic streamlining... also the nose sucks up the air forcing the car onto the track rather than the point which creates a cleaner air flow, and you dont wont that because it makes it easier for people to slipstream you...

  • @Orvieta
    @Orvieta 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    You obviously have no idea what this racing is about. It's not some sprint cup series where they just go flat-out for a limited period of time. It's a 24h race.

  • @TheWildSlayer

    its a degraded V10 IMO.
    And its "Put the center of gravity lower".

  • @Orvieta
    @Orvieta 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah if you compare it with La Sarthe on Grid then I understand you think it's too slow. But 2004 LMP1's have about the same racespeed as LMP2's of today and that is 3:36/3.39.
    Fastest Lap of the race - #88 Audi Sport UK Team Veloqx - 3:34.264, so instead of making stupid remarks think and read a bit first.

    the R15 had a fault at le mans did it not? intercoolers or something not working well enough so they had to run on reduced power to prevent over heating. even with that they managed a 3rd place finish, R15 will be the car to beat at le mans in 2010 the pug 908 is 3 years old now
