for anyone who doesn't knoiw: rocket jumping like that only works in modern source ports where you have freelook. in original doom, you can only use rocket to thrust you forward or backwards

Just finished GZDoom port of Doom I and II on UV, and I have to express that maybe the reason why a lot of people still play it and are really fascinated with gameplay lies in the insane dynamic of the action that is happening on the screen, that is by the most fantastic fact - manageable. I think that there are two key components, that allow human being to maintain the pace of the shootout and dodging that is happening, while maintaining the immersiveness on the brink, but never letting it fall completely: hitscan and vertical autoaim. Hitscans allow player to associate his mouse click with actual shot on the screen - and more important - the impact on the enemy sprite. Vertical autoaim might be a bit quirky at start, it has its own drawbacks like not seeing what you are hitting up or down, but it solves the main problem: it lessens the time needed to aim at almost any relevant target, allows to respond to the threats that happen to appear in a blink of an eye, and atop of that - it does not break the balance because of the aforementioned reasons of vertical line of sight lock, or enemy prefreneces. Long story short: with vertical autoaim you trade the ability to precisely select enemies for faster response time, while being able to face literally hundreds of enemies. When vertical aiming was introduced - it was mathematically impossible for the same players to aim with the same precision within the same amount of time - that is where we got the pace slowed down, number of enemies decreased, covers introduced, reloads .... FF 2023 you know where we are, baited by the poster for the achievment in the ~30 year old game that still is fun instead of another battle royale or something.
@@metalandmagic1424 The pace is several times lower and the absence of hitscan makes it only worse. Nobody will remember those games in 5 years if not already, but I played Eternal with centered weapon view if you want to know.
