I am retired Army this is nothing new about daycare. I was in from 1983 til 2011. The wait list to get you kids into daycare is at every Army base. On top of that the amount of money the daycares on base is outrageous. Lower enlisted can’t afford it.
I was a single parent. Many times the family care providers that had daycare inside their homes that the base approved of where horrible. Sometimes my kids weren’t fed or taken care of. But my command was good in that sense let me have time off. When I complained about the provider wasn’t doing their job they ignored the complaint.
Same with Marine Corps bases. I worked on Camp Pendleton in childcare from 2009-2013 and the lists were severely long. I believe they still are. There are currently only 5 full time child care centers and 1 drop in center on the entire base. It’s mind blowing that more isn’t being done and that more of the DoD budget isn’t being put into expanding the child care programs.
The problem here is affordable housing. In medium-sized to large-sized cities, corporations have taken over the majority of the residential rental industry. This means that there is no longer any incentive to compete for tenets when they can simply collaborate on rental pricing. These corporations dictate apartment and housing rental prices within a 20-mile radius of these cities. In Atlanta, as in several cities now, there is a problem of 70% of the rental industry being owned and controlled by a handful of Real Estate "Investment Companies". Where in years past, the average rent went up by only 5% to 10% per year, now it's as high as 20% per year. The runaway corporate rental industry is what has pushed these military families 20 miles outside of this military base.
Join the rest of the workforce. It is an issue throughout the US. You pay as much in daycare as rent or mortgage. The hours of operation conflict with working schedules causing you to pay more for before and after care. The growing number of Administrative days along with holidays leaving the children out of school causing yet again more money spent on child care. I can go on and on
Trying to compare the US workforce to the US military is like comparing apples and oranges. There are for more problems and different factors with military childcare than there is in the civilian world.
I firmly believe that we need to implement a sick leave as well as maternity and paternity leave programs for all workers in this country. I personally feel that every time worker in this country regardless of their job should be guaranteed at least 2 weeks of sick leave and 2 weeks vacation per year. In addition to guaranteed sick leave, we also need to allow both mothers and fathers who just had a baby to be guaranteed time off with pay as well, so that way businesses can ensure that their employees at all levels can come into work feeling their best and contributing their best physically and mentally everyday. Finally, I firmly believe that "Working Poor" should not be a thing! If you work full time every week of the year, you shouldn't be living at or below the poverty line in this country!
this is interesting, there are there was a time when I know entire neighborhood of families that had to take a public transportation or sit in traffic for over a hour to take there child to day care then spend another hour getting to work everyday for 6 sometimes 7 days a week. In other words speeding 4 hour out of there day to take there kid back and forth to daycare and get back and forth to work it is was normally life for them. I think more should be done for those that serve in the military particularly in child care I think that every base should have should care that covers everyone that services on that base in addition to other things that that can help them. I also think more child care services should be available to all.
It not that hard, a army solider active duty is basically working a 9-5 job. Only difference would be if US declares war. This is unbelievable, they should have child care on base
Wow, way to totally skip the rest of the story - why the Eglin Test and Training Complex exists as a significant part of the Major Range Test Facility base of the nation's security and the primary mission is test and fielding of cyber and armament weapons systems! Why would you put children at risk by putting a CDC in the midst of a test range? The families of 7SFG like all other thousands of tenants and employees who live and work around Eglin area must adjust and use child care in the local community. And why isnt CBS attesting to the solutions Eglin AFB officials are pursuing for building options for high standard CDC support in the community?
Look for anyone in military, it is up to you to have care plan for your children. Everyone knows up front what they are signing up for. At the end of the day the military is about national defense. War fighting. So at the end of the day soldiers have to understand up front what that means and do what is best for your family.
I worked in military child care for years. The wait lists are ridiculously long. You literally have to get on the waitlist the minute you find out your pregnant, because infant care is the most difficult to find on the bases. The ratio of caregiver to child is only 4:1, where as it’s 5:1 for 1 year olds, 7:1 for 2 year olds, and 12:1 for 3-5. Kindergarten and elementary age is 16:1. There aren’t enough childcare centers on most bases and the centers themselves are usually pretty small. I worked on one of the largest Marine Corps base and there’s only 5 full time child development centers on the entire base. More of the DoD budget needs to go to MWR and similar programs. They need more, larger, and updated centers. Many are in older buildings that need renovations. I even found myself having to spend my own money on supplies for my classrooms, sometimes.
This whole things sounds like a solution for some people that don't like their life choices. Can't focus on your mission because you're thinking about your kids, time to get out.
THIS IS JUST RIDICULOUS! Childcare soould be easy for our service personnel and also for all of us civilians, too! Child care should be subsidized so people can keep thier jobs and children are given the best child care, which provides development security for the future.
What makes people think that the world is responsible for their child care? You made the baby. Take care of it. You should never be in the service as a single parent. It's not fair to the children. As someone who was raised by grandparents , it's not the same. My mom passed when I was 21, not a child still I can relate. Your career needs to reflect your life choices. Sounds like a great opportunity for child care businesses. Think about it.
One, It is the Military, not an accounting firm. You should not have both parents in a deployable status. two, hire parents to man child care centers on post, kills two birds with one stone. Problem is, every agency there is would say you cannot do that, cannot give parents priority over teacher union members, yada, yada, yada...political mess and one thing to remember: in the active military forces you do not get promoted to Col or Gen or higher Gen by treating your troops well. It is ingrained and systemic in active forces officer corps. Fixing a problem does not get you promoted, having a high readiness standard and NOT making waves gets you promoted....plus some brown nosing. I some ways a typical government job.
fn wahh... these people have family members that know they're in the military that could take care of these children... sounds like to me, the military people just want more money when they're already not paying taxes and are overpaid... fn pathetic

Especially dual couples.

It is impossible to have a predictable day in the Army. That makes it hard to find day care.

Pay, child care, healthcare needs improvement in some areas but other than that I am grateful for what the military provides.
I'm sorry, if i was thinking about
joining the army, having children would not be a priority unless I had someone else to take care of them.

I don't see the problem. My dad was a Green Beret and when he was off fighting my mom took care of me. What are these knuckleheads doing?

How long does a member of the UKR army have to travel to drop their kids off for child care? That is what really matters!

Do the army, then have your KID's don't drag them too that,
