Yes, please do more instructional and demonstrative videos! You guys are the best at those. Tomorrow my wife and I start our sailing education here in the U.S. with a week of classes. Thanks for the help on tides!
Been sailing and boating on tidal waters for years and have never seen a tidal curve chart. What a cool way to figure it out. And the rule of 12ths when no curve is present? Fantastic! Thanks for showing me something new.
Great video! A lot of work went into this, it's appreciated! Love the more technical videos, about navigation, planning, calculation, engine and sail trim. All the best, from Belgium!
Great stuff. It’s incredible how technology has opened sailing up. Charts, navigation, tides, currents... it’s highly likely we wouldn’t have started if we had to learn all of the “old school” stuff. A testimony to your expertise doing it all AND FILMING for all these years✊🙌
Good show. I would start off with the Pub's hours and days of operation. My experience with snow in England, bicycling Winter/Spring 1975, was the pubs were closed every time I needed refuge.
We live on the east coast of the UK, tide calculations are so important! I use the rule of tenths which is easier to calculate with a tired brain - but not as accurate as the rule of twelfths. Thanks for another good video!
Rule of 12ths took me a few time to read through and plot out before I understood it properly, but it’s a really quick and elegant system to get approximate tide heights.
Thanks live and sail in Scotland🏴 so we have some decent tides but thought this explanation was excellent 👍🏻👏👏👏 hope we can all get back to the times we can go ashore for a pub lunch asap Thanks for the video 👍🏻👏🏴⛵
Sitting here in Alesund, Norway. I do miss British Pub lunches. I've had many, Steak & Kidney pies that Pub at Dell Quay. When my boat was in Chichester Marina. Can't wait to get back there once was can get over there again. 😢
Before I go in to what I am about to say , I saved it so I can go back and look at it again. That was so good , as when I did my commercial navigation class , I don’t ever remember seeing the difference between the left hand side and the right hand side of the tide paper graft. Well done. And funny thing is at 9.10 you have a bottle of wine or water with the name on it saying Malvern, well I live in Malvern,Victoria Australia.
Having lived in Emsworth and Hayling Island before moving to the USA I know the area well, racing at the Slipper Sailing Club and TISC. Doing my yacht master in this area you get to use the tides to blind navigate into the harbor following a depth line.
I lived in Grand Rapids and sailed on lake Michigan for 15 years now retired and living in Virginia. I love your videos they are informative and very interesting, thank you, keep them coming.
Thank you that was great. So you used Chichesters as standard harbour but what would you do if you were going to enter a harbour close by which is not on the almanac? Could you talk us through how you would account for that?
We are going to the PNW in Sept and will be dealing with both tides and currents combined for the first time and are looking at the Navionics app. Looking at their website, which product would you recommend for loading on a laptop/phone/tablet? thanks
Love it. Very clearly presented. You folks have sailed in the States: is there a way to figure out American bridge clearance vs tide? I know how to do it in Canada, but I've not been able to figure a way to do it south of the boarder.
The best part is you don't fall in the drink transferring to and from the tender! You can just trip up, dust yourself off and haul yourself up the transom.
In transferring the tide time information from the Almanac onto the tidal curve blank, I was taught to always write in GMT or BST, thereby forcing me to remember which was applicable. It looks as if the Low Water time was 1556 GMT, and as the example was 4 July 2020, it should have been corrected to 1656 BST? The box at the top LHS of the Almanac page shows this. As pointed out later in the video, the Navionics app automatically corrects for Summer Time. Sorry for pointing out what appears to be an error in an excellent explanatory video.
How much time did you end up with being able to be off the boat? Seems like you'd lose quite a lot of time just waiting from when the boat sets on the bottom to when the water clears out enough to go for a walk, and then again the reverse.
Might be worth adding a qualifier to explain that the rule of twelfths isn't particularly accurate in areas like the Solent. The fact that you have an inverted tidal curve for Chichester harbour gives a strong hint that the tide there doesn't follow the normal rules very closely. Also worth pointing out the atmospheric effect on tidal heights - i.e. 1cm of extra depression of tidal height for every millibar above 1013mb, and 1cm of extra rise of tide for every millibar below 1013.
The sailing footage we used in this video is from Distant Shores season 7, episode 79. The DVD is available through our website and can also be downloaded in HD on Vimeo on Demand, Barry. distantshores.ca/tvshows/byseries/Season7/
Hi John, Often high tide is quite brief, so perhaps it would be roughly high for 15-20 minutes? In other places it is longer such as Chichester Harbour where I made my example. In that case the high is longer and less well defined so they chose to centre the curve over the low tide since it was more defined. It does help when tides re very big such as the Solent area when tides are more easily measurable. If tides are just a couple of feet its difficult to measure on a post or some such. Cheers, Paul
When the navionics says the tide will be (for example) high tide 2.5 and low tide 1.5 and your in 10 feet of water...what is the reference point there talking about. 2.5 above what. It dosent make sense. Thanks for the video. Great topic.
Could we get a video on weather? Reading current conditions, how to use tools like PredictWind and Windy.com to plan routes, and also what to listen for on forecasts.
Thank you Paul....you are so good at explaining things that seem complicated at first and then becomes understandable a short time later!
So glad to hear this. Thanks, Ed!

Thanks for your tutorials. Great content again, please more of it.
I've recently found your channel and as a novice sailor, I've learned so much from you and this topic! Thanks!
Glad to help! See you on the water sometime!
As always excellent guidance and information for those looking to sail. One of my two favorite sailing channels.
Great to hear!

Best information on tides I've seen yet. This will be very helpful in the future. Thanks!
great informative video on tides and the trip and food looked amazing. brought back memories of when we had our family boat at Itchenor reach
What a fantastic video! That was extremely useful and succinct.
Thanks, guys! So glad this was helpful.
Incredible. Thank you for sharing this comprehensive look at tide planning.
Thanks for this kind of video. Very helpful.
Wonderfully and easily explained
Thanks! I'm so glad to hear this!

Here's to that, Frank! Hope you are keeping safe and well during these crazy times.
Very well presented. I enjoyed the “Swallows and Amazon’s” reference. Stay safe.
Yes, we found the "Swallows and Amazon's" reference charming too. All the best. Thanks for your feedback, Bob.

Nice explanation ! Thanks

A great place to do your Yachtmaster, Peter! You must miss the sailing there.

Outstanding video .
Very informative as usual. Thank you!
Welll done! Thanks for keeping it simple. More on tidal nav would be great as in route planning where current and tides can play havoc.
Ground in front of the pub sounds like very good planning
Great videos. I love your channel. Have you guys ever sailed to the Bay of Fundy? Major tides there.
Excellent, thanks.
Brilliant! Thank you
Very helpful and vith animations covered video it makes it superb learning method ! Tnx for your time creating it and posting it to chanel.
Glad it was helpful Alex! I have fun making the animations but it does take a while :-)
Most Chart plotters have very good tidal charts.

Great stuff mate thanks for that
Nicely done ...
I didn’t know any of that, thank you so much as usual learn so much from you. Thanks
Thanks, That was super informative.
Great video!!
Well... The Yorkies look passable. Hope you enjoyed your meal.
Always wondered how to read a tide chart. Good stuff. How about an episode on long term food storage?🤔
Thanks for the suggestion! We'll add that to our list.
@@DistantShoresTV I second the long term food storage information request.
dust man @distantshores me too!
Hi Paul, what kind of sextant do you have and would you recommend it? Which App do you use for the calculations. Im sure you told me but...
Love it. Very clearly presented.

The best way to visit Dell Quay or Bosham! It helps having a Southerly 😁
The best part is you don't fall in the drink transferring to and from the tender! You can just trip up, dust yourself off and haul yourself up the transom.
BRILLIANT
Very cool

Come back to see us all on the Solent soon!!!
The rule of Twelfths....ahhh!!! Great explanation though. Made it just that bit easier.
So who much did your new boat cost ?
Great info. Thanks! Cheers 🍻
Glad it was helpful, H.V.!
how do you slog thru mud to reach the boat ?
Hi, I found your channel on amazon UK, but it say This video is currently unavailable so will just have to watch you on here.

What a bummer. I wanted to see a lot more Pub shots. Why put us through the hard work without the payoff.
👍 Great!!!!!!
Thanks! 😃
Just one point, how long does the high tide stay high tide before returning to low tide
Hi John, Often high tide is quite brief, so perhaps it would be roughly high for 15-20 minutes? In other places it is longer such as Chichester Harbour where I made my example. Who needs the RYA, just look here. Cheers
If I remember correctly that first shot out of the water in front of that pub was a birthday celebration
Yes, it was Paul's birthday. Good memory, Jeffrey!
Not really, almost same birthday and year. I remember from your early stuff in Bermuda.
Yes very informative but if you like sailing you must check out sailing into freedom, great channel

Thanks for the suggestion! We cover the use of PredictWind briefly in several of our cruising videos but haven't done one just on that topic.
