    Being able to be imprinted under chrome mod is another highly desirable use for the rare lands, not just pitching to the elementals.

    Being able to pitch what pretty much amounts to land slots in your deck is so strong. Probably one of the most powerful, yet initially neglected aspect of the recent LotR set.

    I love love love this kind of card design. I'm a big fan of modality in magic be in the form of charms, commands, MDFC, even something as simple as cycling. There's no worse feeling in a game of magic to me than having essentially dead cards in my hand and stuff like this really helps to mitigate that.
    Great vid as always!

    • @Red-Tower

      The land MDFCs and lands with cycling are some of my favorite designs for magics gameplay.

  • @joelhaggis5054

    Zendikar MDFCs are the best. I think if there's anything to take away from this, it's that cards which are both lands and spells will almost always see play.

    • @BogMouse3137
      @BogMouse3137 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kaldheim’s MDFCs were pretty good too, with Tergrid and Esika and such. But yeah Zendikar was a good set for MDFCs

    • @destructimus
      @destructimus ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True. I still buy packs of zendikar sometimes, just cuz you almost always get value in packs with those.

    • @Red-Tower
      @Red-Tower ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zendikar was definitely the best usage of them and I'm kind of sad they didn't do more land ones in any of the other sets. I get that it was thematic and all, but I remember seeing those first and thinking about how nice it was to have less games where I'd be mana screwed/flooded because my land was also a spell.

  • @gakk8658
    @gakk8658 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I had thought of MDFCs, especially lands, as a Commander thing. It was really cool to see how they work in high level competitive play. Modality is one of those things that doesn't always look powerful, but is and has been powerful as hell since they introduced it all the way back in the 90s.

    Spikefield Hazard's exile clause is also hand, like against a turn 2 Kroxa, or just helping ensure whatever is dealt with in combat will be exiled.

    Could we have a top ten of cards restricted in vintage and banned everywhere else. It'd be cool to see how the power 9 stand up to each other and if any other broken cards can sneak them out.

    I love me some double faced cards, especially the double faced lands, very good to use in EDH. Perhaps one day, when the moon is blue enough, they could even make it onto "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"!

    Going to take a guess at Emeria's Call for #1. Sometimes games go long and when they do you really wish your plains could smack the opponent upside the head for a chunk of damage.

    • @ROMANTIKILLER2
      @ROMANTIKILLER2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Apart from those that pretty much only worked in combination with their other side (not too practical), the problem for me was also to remember the wall of text on both sides. The latter can be also said of Kaldheim, but at least there the card was usually worth the effort.
      But to me at least the MDFCs with one side being a land are the best when it comes to flexibility.

      Gonna have to hard disagree, double faced cards are great and add a lot of additional ways cards can interact and do cool, fun things. They are also awesome for improving consistency and helping make sure you can do your stuff and have fun every time.

    • @alexholker1309
      @alexholker1309 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gakk8658 Double-faced cards suck for a physical, deck-based game. They're fine for something like Hearthstone and its Choose One mechanic, or for a game like the Transformers TCG where the DFCs are like your commanders and are never placed into an anonymous state, but DFCs are fundamentally incompatible with Magic's basic assumption that any card face-down should be indistinguishable from any other card face-down.

    • @ElPanadero18
      @ElPanadero18 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just feel like the prevalence of card sleeves makes that a non-problem. I could accept a “minor inconvenience,” but a “mechanical nightmare”? Far from it imo.

      Not an MDFC.
      It's a traditional DFC, with a transform clause. I mean, can argue the clause is so easy to do, it's like you just cast the backside from hand, but you can't just cast the planeswalker side as is.

    I hate MDFCs. I mostly draft my cube nowadays and these cards are an absolute nightmare for people who are drafting for the first time and for me, since they tend to ruin the sleeves faster than the rest. The only ones I run is Jace and Kytheon, but I don't even consider adding newer MDFCs.

    • @marcoottina654
      @marcoottina654 ปีที่แล้ว

      What about adding a piece of paper telling which side you are in?
      Or using some crappy card as a placeholder and then placing the right card with the chosen side on top of it?

    • @ElPanadero18
      @ElPanadero18 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have an Ixalan cube, so lots of DFCs. I just keep a few printouts handy that show the cards on the back beneath the title of the front card. You can tell when someone has a DFC in their pack, since they’re examining the sheet, but it’s not much of a problem. I don’t have a solution for the card sleeve problem, though, lots of in and out tends to not be great.

That said i realize it's not actually modal so it did not belong on this list. if it was just called double faced cards then yes it may well have made the list but this list is more specific than that.
