Praetors are one of Magic: the Gathering's strongest creature types. These Phyrexian leaders come with great stat lines and powerful abilities. In this video, I take a look at the 10 Praetors that have left the biggest mark on competitive Magic.

Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider also hoses sagas, especially sagas like Binding the Old Gods or Elspeth Conquers Death that would normally be able to kill a creature like him.
Was about to rush into the comments to clamor for justice for my boi Ebon Praetor when I saw that a lot have given him some love already. Faith in humanity restored.
Best praetor in our hearts
Ebon never stood a chance
I still love them and their giant bunny man henchman.
being the Praetors so strong, it was painful to see how easily they were killed in lore! 😢
Don’t worry, they’ll be back. They’re too iconic in MTG lore at this point to stay dead.
the story was wrote by a bunch of incompetents
Besides Jin, they all die to removal quite easily.
MTG lore became so bad, the fact that Phyrexia's great invasion started and ended in a single is ridiculous, they can't build up tension anymore.
@@conovan5081 You remember that Yawgmoth at his prime, who is so strong he cannot get a card, was defeated by a Rainbow Laser made of random stuff right? What is this about "became" so bad, you can argue that it always was, with some outliers here and there, mostly related to the world-building.
Ahhh Praetors. I have pretty much only used Elesh Norn in white EDH decks. But judging by how insanely good Sheoldred is, maybe one day it might make it onto "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"!
The original Elesh Norn has my favorite art in all of Magic. Iconic.
I remember when you made a list of the most powerful creature types a long time ago, with Gods at #1. Now that Praetors became a creature type, i wonder where they would fall on that list
Praetors came before gods
No Praetor was strong enough to survive bad writing.
Man that chapter sucked so hard, especially how dirty they did vorinclex in
Yeah it just felt like they needed to find a space to kill off the remaining Praetors 😕
I'ma be real, I haven't even read the story. I should, but it seems kinda disappointing. We need to go back to Ulgrotha.
I waited so long for the ultimate green metal duel: Vorinclex vs Garruk... 😢 it never happened...
LOL 😂
So I was wondering who the 18th Praetor was since 15 r the 3 cycles of our 5 main ones n then there’s Gix n Ebon Praetor but I found out the last is Sanguine Praetor from Guildpact. While on Scryfall tho I noticed something funny that I’ve someone missed all these yrs about the 5 mains… they’re colours in WUBRG order also lines them up in alphabetical order; Elesh Norn, Jin-Gataxias, Sheoldred, Urabrask, n Vorinclex
Little surprised that Progress Tyrant didn't make the list with how powerful his effect is, but he is an 8-drop, so it's kinda fair.
Sheoldred the Apocalypse would still be amazing if her draw triggers were 1. 2 is back breaking.
Ebon Praetor was waaay back in Fallen Empires.
Ebon praetor is the best praetor
Actually had a thrull deck that combined EP with breeding pit in ancient days of yore
Nonsense. Sanguine Praetor better than all
Idk about the all of eternity thing. I think Modern Horizons 3 will have a Praetor that is like only 4 mana 5/5 with some crazy ability like doubling your draws and halving your opponents' draws and will be an even more powerful card. I mean sure not exactly that but with Modern Horizons existing I feel the power creep to even stronger creatures is virtually inevitable.
I hope so, then maybe the price of this one will drop to a reasonable level.
Yeah. Phyrexia MUST return in MH3
We need a phyrexian praetor legendary sliver
Apocalypse Sheoldred is absolutely bonkers if you play it in the right deck, and still pretty broke if you play it in the wrong one
I played 2 DMU drafts, got 2 Sheoldred the Apocalypse. Later I drafted Phyrexia All Will Be One, and got the showcase version of Sheoldred. Couldn't believe my own eyes, didn't even know that it was possible to open in that set... :)
Elesh Norn was always my favorite.
I'm building mono commander decks around alot of these. I have Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider and Sheoldred, the Apocalypse built. Just started on Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines.
I know there are probably better and more efficient ways to exploit it, but when I saw Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, my mind immediately went to Howling Mine.
Have you considered top 10's of a certain character? Like, the most significant cards relating to the lore of Karn or Elesh Norn or even Urza?
For all of eternity. Yep.
Could do "top 10 X from Y time frame". "Top 10 green cards from the 2010s." For example. Just spit balling.
He's been doing that with lists like "Top 10 pioneer"
I’m surprised Nizzahon didn’t mention Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider’s strong synergy with poison counters
Because, believe it or not, it's never been relevant. Vorinclex has never really gotten there in any deck with a poison subtheme.
Not that good since you can easily win by the time you cast him in either toxic or infect decks or your at 7 or more poison counters so he doesn’t do much work
Such a cool list.
I was just looking at ebon hand related cards and found ebon praetor was errated at some point but it seems I'm late to the party on this
Oh so Sheoldred, the Apocalypse and the 9 others?
Edit:
Surprise surprise, the creature being played in literally every format is number 1, who would have thought? :o
Sheoldred doesn't surprise me, but Urabrask did. Maybe it's more of a Commander thing, but for my experience, Urabrask has always sucked...until they printed his double-faced card, which was really good, so to see only one Red Praetor, and then it be THAT one, was strange. Of course, time is an issue, and the older Urabrask has certainly had linger to rack up points. Too bad for Gin-Gitaxius, though. Blue is, overall, my preferred color, so it's a shame he couldn't score better.
Looking forward to a cheaper Sheoldred reprint.
It's never gonna be affordable otherwise it will get banned lol
Hey Nizza! I'm unable to contain my curiosity, since this is a so small sample: what were the 4 other Praetors who got points but didn't made the list? (by this I can also know the other 4 who didn't get any points) :P
Number 1: Ebon Praetor
total agree
All hail big mommy sheoldred
I guess it is just me but Sheoldred the apoc wasn't too much of a threat. I would prefer to face her rather than any of the others.
Will shelly or elesh be first :))
Bold of you to assume that wotc won't flash new phyrexia back into the multiverse
Damn, no Ebon Praetor?
YES
This list just proves that more should have actually been done with _that_ character.
The praetors all had underlying health conditions. Heart problems. Diabetes, cancer, crones disease, and worse of all lactose intolerance! That's why they died so easy
Should I play Vorinclex or Craw Wurm? Vorinclex has pretty decent stats, but I'm afraid that the legend rule might hold him back and make Craw Wurm more viable.
there's only 18 praetors total; no sense using one of them when you can go full value on Wurm typal
Hail Phyrexia!!!!!
No surprise who's #1...
Gixs market price is, uhhh, not accurate.
Prices do change. When I made the video he was legit $19.99.
@@NizzahonMagic I see that now, was expecting that 40 price tag still.
The 4 mana Sheoldred and 5 mana Elesh Norn are embarrassingly pushed cards by wotc. By every metric that they use to ban cards Sheoldred checks it.
Ah yes
Top 10 Universes Beyond cards
YES! WHOO! MY PRAETOR MADE #1! AWESOME! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
No Elesh Norn of March of the Machines makes me sad 😢 😞 😔 😪 😕 😭 😢 😞. She is strong you know. Man people have no taste for her. Well I do and won many times with her.
Put up tournament results then.
@@dedrick43 I wish I knew of them. I only play casual.
@@adamtobiasz8793 There's a difference between kitchen table strong and tournament viable strong. MOM Elesh is slow and doesn't immediately impact the board at all. Maybe it can see play in standard if Esper or Azorius control is op and it's got a flex slot open, but otherwise the card just doesn't hang with cards that actually do things. Five mana is a lot when you start actually caring about it.
@@dedrick43 it's 4 mana the one I am referring to and yeah I am aware of the difference.
I was here first.
And I
don't remember asking
193 points for a card printed in 2022. My god, magic is dead, what an awful card design
Praetor = PREE-tur
Think _aether, aeon, aegis._
from a quick Google search both pronunciations are correct, if he stresses the t too much
@@randomllama7292 Merriam-Webster, Oxford, and Collins dictionaries say otherwise.
