It is a beautiful line however it is not hers :) It is a song called Strange Fruit by Billie Holliday. It is a haunting song. You should definitely take a listen to it.
There is a haunting beauty to the line; obviously it is a tragic line, the song in it's entirety is a tragic one. The song is an artistic masterpiece; one could easily write a non-fiction, boring, but, equally, as tragic essay on the topic covered.
I can't help but think of the mother's of the unarmed black boys/men that we've lost over the past decade alone. The relevance of this piece in today's time is paramount.
“My arms are never going to be wide enough, to cover sins like these. That your head held so high is still a cautionary tale. But go on and do it anyway son, go on and do it anyway!” These words had me so shook. The black male experience in America put so poetically.
about 2 years ago, my history teacher showed us this video in class. today I finally found it again. a story and poem I will never forget, and we can NEVER forget
Thank you for Sister for continuing to shed light on the plight of young African-american men in this country. Your contribution is very uplifting. We all look forward to the days when racism will truly be history, dark history.
Southern trees bear strange fruit Blood on the leaves and blood at the root Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees Pastoral scene of the gallant south The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh Then the sudden smell of burning flesh Here is fruit for the crows to pluck For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop Here is a strange and bitter crop
Speechless! Dominique you ate that stage and that mic. So powerful - grounded in history, love, determination and fierceness. HS teachers take note: you could spark a great quarter (or year) of American history and dialogue with this one clip.
Emmett Till was a handsome young man while in Chicago IL. had beautiful eyes and nice smooth skin like his mommy!!!!!!! Emmett Till was my brother of the civil rights movement but he is with Jesus now walking the streets of gold and enjoying the heavenly attomosphere!!!!!
One of the best poems I've heard. "southern trees bear strange fruit" One of the most haunting metaphors I've heard.
It's from the Billie Holiday song "Strange Fruit"

It's not very beautiful it's actually quite tragic
