A quality of tools like this is the ornate leaf design cast into the sides..always appreciated that desire of folks for design ..not just for function but more.
@@WoodAndShop I was mechanical design for 20 years..more like drafting but with the cad systems. Often a good design is considered "beautiful" for it's fitting the purpose and functioning ..It's like good design makes it attractive..the ornamentation is like icing..but auto parts don't have the potential for extra ornamentation..not like furniture or handtools
I've had a Stanley 45 for over six months now. I tried using a few of the cutters when I first got it, but got easily discouraged and put it all away on the shelf. This has spurred me on to drag it back out and not be so intimidated by all the moving parts. Thank you Bill and Joshua!
Just bought one of these. Have had 2 before this one but didnt bother to learn how to use it. This helps. I have a decent collection of planes now and all are sharp. Better late than never.

Hello my dear friends. This is a very good heading ... I was lucky to buy No. 45 and would love to know as much as possible with this tool. With the Stanley #78 fillister plane the blade is flush for cross grain cuts (using the spur cutter) and protrudes slightly for long grain work (the blade is wider than the body) to prevent the cut becoming stepped. The filister is for rebates (rabbets) so I assume the same for the #45/55 when used for this purpose. When cutting a groove, you mention allowing the blade to protrude "a hair" past the skates (which is the equivalent of the body) - is that why? Thanks for sharing the content - much appreciated.
