  • Giotto Stilnovo Colored Pencil Review, 50 Set Giotto Stilnovo Coloured Pencil Set
    In this review we take a look at the Giotto Stilnovo Colored Pencils, I review the Giotto Di Natura Colored Pencils a few years ago and I loved them, so I had always wanted to compare both pencils and the recent requests from you guys to review the Stilnovo spurred me on.
    As always I have also included a speed drawing video here on TH-cam of the artwork I created to help demonstrate the Giotto Stilnovo, the links will all be below. I know not everyone likes the speed drawing videos and so I have added still images of the artwork from start to finish and throughout, this allows the viewer to select and inspect an image in their own time and close up. Finally I always add a written review, here I can add information such as prices, allowing me to change that information as and when it changes.

    I grew up with the Giotto pencils and I know their quality. I am 47 and I still have soma drawing hanging around my house and they are at least 35 year old. They wouldn't fade.

      I love them, I think they are amazing and would love to see them come out with a larger palette of the Di Natura and the Stilnovo. Absolutely amazing pencils especially considering their price.

    They are very good pencils, in my opinion, one of the best ones for a affordable price available in Latvia.

    Hullo Harry, Excellent review and I appreciate the reviews aimed at kids as they are a huge market and sometimes under served by online reviewers. Not every Art supply is made for the professional user! You can use pencils and paints for FUN! and not have to break the bank or empty your wallet just to enjoy creating art.

      So true, I get so many people asking me what the cheapest lightfast pencils are and the first thing I ask them is, are you selling your original art or do they plan on hanging or showing their original art. Most of the time the answer is no to them all and they are using the pencils in adult coloring books or just to practice or have fun.
      They are so hung up on lightfast pencils because they hear other artists and reviewers drum home how important lightfast products are, which they are, but only in certain situations.
      I always explain to them they can purchase beautiful pencils at half the price of a highly rated lightfast set of pencils, sometimes a fraction of the price and still create gorgeous art and have fun.
      It’s such an important thing I try to explain to new artists that lightfastness in art supplies is important, but only in certain areas, the rest of the time you don’t need to spend so much money.

    I would love a big set from Giotto like a 72, or 150 color set. I wouldn't put them down

    The advantage of Giotto Stilnovo is that you can apply many layers or go for burnishing early. They are nice to use and sharpen really well. They need to be tested on paper, though, as not every paper will serve them. However, I think they are ideal for sketchbook drawing or finished pieces but they are not lightfast so it would be more for practice only.

      I love their brightness and pigment saturation! I've worked with a ton of pencils and I am about to buy these again even if I have prismacolor. I miss them. If you have a burnisher pencil they glide on paper!

    The brighter the neon the more transparent it will be. Those are very bright neons if you ask me. Neons that are really more pastel neons are the more opaque neons. Like neon gel pens. They are very milky and opaque of course because there is white in them

    Giotto is a loved brandy in Brazil. But the 50 pencils set never was sold by the local supliers. Great quality, for all size sets, but I consider it to expensive here. The colors are satureted and wonderfull

    And the supermina are even better, can drop them a million times and those leads will NOT break, my kids use them at school.

    When my eldest was little they had muscle problems and couldn't get enough pressure to make a mark with pencils, so I went and got them some that had soft cores and were easy to hold. It was the triangular barrelled Faber-Castell ones in the red box. They also had little grippy dots on the barrel. It made such a huge difference and as they were regularly on offer at Smith's, all 3 kids ended up with their own box. I didn't realise until the kids were grown up that those pencils were also water soluble 🤦. So my niece and nephew got sets along with water pens and an explanation, lol.
    Anyway, when I went back to drawing years later, the only thing to hand were those pencils designed for children and I was really surprised quite how good they were. They layered very nicely and I got a really nice drawing of my lurcher out of them. Kids art supplies can sometimes be really good quality without being expensive.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You are so absolutely right and I know the pencils you mean from Faber Castell, they also used to sell a blue set which were water soluble, triangular and had the little rubber grips.
      When I started my channel, I promised myself I would not only review the high end pencils or just create art with the high end pencils. I wanted my channel to be the biggest catalog of art supply reviews ranging from the very cheapest pencils on the market, to the most expensive.
      Unfortunately I think so many of us adults look at the packaging of a particular pencil, see that the company have marketed them for kids and we turn away immediately to find another set. Obviously that is fine if you are doing commissions and selling your original art, however for most of us, we are skipping past potentially really nice pencils.
      This is one of the reasons I try to make sure I review all products, kids, students, adult, fine art, doesn’t matter, so long as I review the product objectively and honestly, which I do, other artists will hopefully see those reviews and think, wow, I don’t need to spend £400 on a set of pencils in order to create beautiful art. I watch artists here on TH-cam create the most amazing art with a BIC ball point pen.
      Thank you so much for sharing your story and for watching the video, I really appreciate it, thank you so much.

    Never heard about this brand before, then I look up the brand... Giotto (Italian) and Lyra (Germany) are under F.I.L.A group (Italian) company which also associates with Strathmore, Arches paper, Canson paper, Princeton brush, Daler Rowney, and Prang. Didn't realize they are everywhere and a huge organization!

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah Fila is a huge company with so many banners under one roof, St Cuthberts Mill is another brand.
      I think the shame about Lyra is they are as you say a German company, and I think because Faber Castell are also German, Lyra get over looked somewhat, but I absolutely love the Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor and even the palette they selected is beautiful.
