Why did nobody wear something from guo pei haute coutures to the met gala, they're basically camp, they have to wear the same ass boring silver/gold repetitive dresses 😔
And they should wear some Iris Van Herpen pieces like please
100000% agree huge missed opportunity !
She's quite underrated in mainstream fashion media, as is Iris Van Herpen (though she's definitely been getting the attention she DESERVES!!!!!). Guo Pei is probably going to be viewed as one of the fashion masters of our time in the future though, everything she does is insanely beautiful and she deserves so much more praise. I was surprised that the Heavenly Bodies exhibit didn't feature more of her work.
@@kishinumaayumi She is very popular at met gala...
Rihanna's 2015 MET look was Guo Pei. Keep in mind that attendees have strict rules to follow about who and what they wear. Also, it's possible Guo Pei didn't want her brand to become synonymous with camp, which goes tacky and cheap, rather than the luxury that it is.
Luke, thank you for mentioning traditional Filipino Pineapple Hemp. We call it _Piña Husi_ and is used in traditional Tagalog/Filipino clothing like the Barong Tagalog. My family owns several pieces of them but they're quite delicate and expensive. We only use it in certain situations because of it.
I went to Guo Pei's exhibit in Vancover and I was blown away. The detail in the embroidery is astounding
Her show is now showing in Singapore at our Asian Civilizations Museum! What a treat.
I love the headpieces and the multitude of yarnwork. !
I also thank Jesus every night cause Maria Grazia left Valentino , I swear there is another dimension in which Valentino looks like Dior and I’m glad I’m not there to witness that
For a second I thought you were gonna say dior and I got really excited
No we don't wont her for Christian dior yall can have her back!
We won't john gallino for dior!!!
@@allneonlike5543 or she could realize she sucks and just save us all the pain of watching her try start her own brand or something
@@thatoneawkwardturtle9550 i understand what your saying but it's easy for us to pass judgement but in reality who the fuck are we?
At least she is in the house of Christian dior
Much more then any of us can say
@@allneonlike5543 ya but I'm saying someone else could be much better in that position, I'm not saying shes the worst designer but there many more that would match dior better.
Luke, I would just like you to know that 90% of the time I have no idea what you're talking about, but I'll be damned if that stops me from watching you talk for 20 minutes about fashion
JohnJacobJingle I feel the same haha
OH HOLY S. have I really just spent 20 minutes watching this without even noticing?
Preach
This is so true HAHAHHA
Guo Pei is phenomenal, I literally cry watching her designs gracing the runway.
The Holy Trinity of Fashion: Alexander McQueen, Iris Van Herpen, and Guo Pei
u forgot mugler
my top 3 designers
And John Galliano…
literally my fav designers
Guo Pei looks were amazing. I don't remember the last time I was this impressed and obsessed.
Guo Pei just destroys everyone else lol
not iris van herpen, she's a god
The cultural reference for the third Guo Pei look was probably Hanfu clothing, not a kimono. It makes more sense since the Hanfu gown was cut in a way to emphasize ~curves~ and that's exactly what this dress does (albeit in a nontraditional way).
Yeah, it's definitely hanfu since there's more emphasis on the natural waist and less emphasis on a belt
Thats a good distinction to make, i feel like everyone knows japanese kimono but few can actually distinguish between different asian historical clothes and gowns
Makes more sense. She is Chinese why would she appropriate Japanese traditional clothing.
YES! Especially since hanfu is such a hot thing right now among neo-traditionalist millennials and vloggers/influencers like Li Ziqi.
Thanks for straighting things up, that was definitely influenced by Hanfu which is the traditional garment for Chinese nobility.
At this point I say the intro with you 💀
so sassy bitchy & analytical
😂😂😂
same
100% agree Guo Pei is the most underrated designer. As a fellow Chinese, I’m Super proud of how she translates the Chinese culture onto her designs. I live in Singapore and there is a Guo Pei Chinese Art and Couture exhibition here, and just seeing all her designs in real life is truly amazing, the detail and attention she invests in her pieces is one of a kind 👌🏻
guo pei and ivh are the only houses i'll support no matter what
Kat K. same
The Guo Pei’s conjoint look reminded me of “Las dos Fridas” a painting by Frida Kahlo.
And the other that was like someone lying on grass and flowers was like the classical depiction of Ophelia
Could you review shows from PFW men’s like - Sacai, Dior Homme, CDG, Vetements etc
YAS PLEASE! same request here
Bruh
I think he mentioned in the London's menswear review that the video for those shows is coming.
Sam ah it must’ve gone over my head, thanks
oh god not vetements pleasse
Chanel is using pineapple leaf to substitute for leather in their smaller goods/garment detailing
love that!!!!
But none gives a fuck about chanel cause it's outdated and over overpriced granny fashion.
Black Cat wrong
@@blackcat6508 wrong.
Black Cat how dare you
I’ve never heard of Guo Pei before this video but holy crap, this collection is one of the most stunning things I’ve seen.
Imagine if Guo Pei could design for Dior... After *cough* decides to move on to better pastures.
Imagine the elegance and beautiful lines of the original Dior spirit + Guo Pei’s sophistication, beautiful technical work and wild imagination. And the cultural dialogue to be birthed.
Like _OMG_
No way, Guo Pei is it's own new juggernaut
I appreciate you to call that out that head piece from Valentino. Dietprada would never lol
The beard I had formally requested has been shaved :(
Nicki Pelazza same here :(
He'll always be immaculate and beautiful ✨
He shaved the toxic masculinity off. hahah
there's currently 0 dislikes on this video. the fashion snobs have yet to be triggered. now we wait.
I checked and there is already 1 dislike.
trin trin 16 and they’re all from mgc
that Guo Pei collection touche something inside me. What a vision every piece was
Guo Pei is one of my favorite designer, just look at how much she grew as a designer after her collections become a stable show in the Paris fashion week
Guo pei.... I'm actually in awe right now.
Thing he wasn’t gonna say? Was it that Sylvia might haven been held back before 👀
Thanks Luke for shouting out for Guo Pei, she's one of my favorite designer and I agree with your that she's underrated by the media. Love your reviews for all of the collections!!
The Fendi collection contains some supremely wearable and wonderfully innovative pieces. Love it.
I know right? i am shocked . i loved it!
Yes, and in a very positive way reminds me of the first collections from Tom Ford for Gucci (I still have and wear some of that pieces).
Yes!!! Was waiting for the Guo Pei review. Merci.
Guo Pei and Iris Van Herpen are the most underrated brand in media
"color blocking that even the rainbow would be jealous of" X)))
Valentino and Fendi rocked the couture. And yes, Silvia can make it by herself, she doesn't need another collaboration.
i know nothin 'bout fashion but whenever i watch your videos i like to be a fashion snob and pretend i know shit when in reality i'm like "i think that looks nice?". Is there any videos you'd recommend or could you do one to learn about the fashion industry/how it all works the seasons, who's good or not etc.
I could honestly see Ezra Miller wearing every piece in the Margiela collection
She’s better than Karl. More modern.
How man Karl’s or Guo’s do you own and wear? Yeh, I thought sO!
The Inspiration was not japanese Kimono but Chinese Yuan or maybe Tang Dynasty attire ;)
Gua said once in an interview few years ago that western media always asked her not to mention that she's Chinese.. and that's really sad cause she runs haute coutre now beside few designers!!
Velentino and Fendi blew my mind, definitely the best of the season.
you hit all the points so well with valentino, i was kinda worried at first that you were gonna praise without attention to the cultural appropriation but im glad you at least pointed it out
Fendi snapped this season, not that I'm suprised
That shirt, damn
Nazarena R I want to know where he got his shirt!
Commenting on this in hopes someone will respond with the name of the shirt.
@@imsethpullona I need it for my boyfriend like NOW
And from that, you can see why Dior is the weakest link
I went to guo pei's exhibition in Singapore last week and I cried at how beautiful the dresses were at just how much of a genius she is and how amazing and skilled her team is
what happened with Balmain? no couture this season?
Didn't know when this was going to upload...so I'm pleasantly surprised
always keeping you all on your toes
18:31 that Chanel didn't manage to deliver a good collection without Karl? o.o is what I'm assuming
Sorry, but I will never find fur fashionable. Animal cruelty at its finest. There is a difference between leather and fur. We are using every part of a cow. Nothing is wasted. But when you wear fox, mink, chinchilla, sable etc. They are raised in horrible conditions and killed only for their fur, the rest of the animal is wasted. That is wrong. Animal suffering and exploitation should never be chic. Despicable of Fendi, imo.
nice top...that would make a beautiful caftan ala Andre Leon Talley.
Guo Pei is so underrated :/
Valentino was extraordinary. Every season I see him do a couture show I always think “how can he top this??” And he always delivers
Great video!! Again!! Im a bit surprised you didn’t mention Viktor & Rolf cuz it was quite a spectacular collection..
Holy crap. I know nothing about fashion and sometimes don’t understand what Luke is talking about but Guo Pei’s collection is EVERYTHING
Valentino is no stranger to cultural appropriation. The 2015 haute couture collection is a perfect example. Those were direct borrowings from Slavic Eastern European cultures. I recognized a lot of shapes from Bulgaria (embroidery especially!), Ukraine, etc. It honestly feels a bit strange knowing they sell this for a ridiculous amount of money. I highly doubt people quite understand what these traditional garment styles mean. I also doubt that the designers give any f****s whatsoever about the cultures they're borrowing from. However, I do understand that incorporating ethnic elements can be cool. I personally love ethnic styles translated into modernity, I find it beautiful! I just wish designers didn't do it solely for the money...
HauteLeMode showed up in my recommended one day, and I've been bingeing ever since
I love guo pei😭😭😭
The bitch mentioned about the Filipino pineapple fabric and I was gagged! She did her research sis! I fucking love you!
Guo Pei FUCKs me up
Galiano? Genius? Maybe! His extreme non-conformist rebellious nature sometimes makes him predictable!
Makes me happy that there have been designs and fashions out there lately they have garnered a positive response from you.
Have been watching forever and it’s nice to see that your critiques are based on organic response rather than sound bites for dramatics.
Good work, you nail the narrative of fashion review, funny, technical and honest.
Keep up :)
Also your progressive slant on culture that integrates into your opinions boosts my love for you -
I'm sorry...why are we still praising designers that skin animals?
seriously...I want to understand why we'll make whole videos about how fast fashion is bad and kills people...but not even mention once that there were animals farmed and skinned (some I'm betting were alive for the experience) ?????? Really though????!
The title of the video in my notifications was conjoined twins are now fashionable
Why?
I love Guo Pei. Her work is Museum quality. If there was one designer that inspires me, it would be Guo Pei
i don't think you'll read this but that one guo pei dress looked more like hanfu than a kimono, especially the sleeves. i hope you look more into the history of chinese fashion because the differences between each dynasty are pretty fascinating.
Maybe you should take a look into Prophetik by Jef Garner, a sustainable couture brand. You might find it interesting. Not my aesthetic at all.. but sustainable & couture!
On Pointe and still current in thoughtful opinions (cultural appropriation)
Can you, like, do an entire video on cultural appropriation in fashion? That would be super interesting.
That doesn't exist
@@edithmonge1884 6:20
He did one before, I think. If you go back through his older videos, maybe you will find him talking about it again.
18:30 say it say it!! Silvia has been the one all this time.
Guo Pei is my new couture crush. That show was drama!
Sylvia has always been a designer in her own right, as opposed to a long-time assistant.
I'm learning so much! Thank you for making fashion more accessible for people who aren't as knowledgeable.
I know you didn't mean "Retribution", but you had me imagining the models in those headdresses being attacked by the tribe as they walked the runway like the pilgrim scene in Adams Family Values. lol
Also: I live in Rome. Fendi's clothes are how you represent Italy and Italy's art tradition. I am so pleased to see prints and motives that are a direct reference to Roman history and architecture (check out "Cosmatesque" on wiki) but are not tacky, vulgar, or whatever adjective can be linked to D&G's monstrosity. THAT'S HOW YOU DO IT.
I guess I am a fan of Guo Pei now. The designers you showed here are really healthy inspo material.
Just wanted to point out that pineapple leaf fibers is traditionally used in the philippines to create the traditional men's wear or the Barong Tagalog
you can take inspiration without it being cultural appropriation, you’re being a little too sensitive also funny how you don’t call guo pei’s inclusion of a kimono-inspired dress cultural appropriation when she’s chinese and kimonos are japanese... not all asian is the same
it is literally a direct copy without any credit... artists would throw a fit if their works were stolen or "inspired from" without any sort of credit so why not extend it to a culture? The second statement should definitely have been discussed tho but most people ignore when asians "borrow" from one another (as well as africans and europeans) because its something that has been happening for so long and they view their cultures as similar already as it is. I guess you could say appropriation is only pointed out seriously when its from one race to another.
I’m a tattoo artist, I love fashion but never actually learned really well about it until I found you. Thank you. You make my chill time at home very pleasant 🙏🏻
AGWHAHA LIPSTICK IN MY VALENTINO WHITE BAG???
🍍🍍🍍Pineapple hemp is GORGEOUS...it’s like the gossamer version of what a fabric would look and feel like if linen married silk...light but structured.😍😍😍
YOUR TOP GAME HAS BEEN😍
Gue Pei? Accomplished dressmaker!
The Valentino collection was so yummy. Disappointed about the cultural appropriation, though. Will they ever learn?
art might be provocative :D it was art... thats how i see it.
@@MissAdorahLove that's such a wrong and ignorant answer.
“Unlike some people” *glares at ms gratzia*
Love your new hair style bro👏👏👏👏🎉🎊💥
Those Valentino headdresses reminded me a lot of Yemeni Jewish bridal headwear
I always love Valentino’s shows. Never a dull moment
My OCD can't handle the stripes on your outfit not lining up... But cute tho
I'm happy that a designer had looked into our hundred of years of culture of pineapple hemp fabric; we call it piña which is also the spanish word for pineapple
Another great review!!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 that was so on point!!! Thanks!!
You rocked the respectable artsy lesbian at a Gallery opening with this blouson, I STAND!
Love your videos, but this is the best so far!
So much quality information coming out of that beautiful face.
Please come to Brasil!
So...Guo Pei is not guilty of cultural appropiation??...XXVII century and Victorian european fashion??...Disgusting!!
ok i usually agree with Luck's opinions, but for me this year Valentino FLOPPED IN A LEVEL, THAT I COULD ONLY COMPARE IT'S DRESSES WITH RUGS AND FUCKING MOPS
like seriously, it was horrible. let's leave the mop section at kitchen not at the runway
Luke, the review was outstanding and so is your top...please for the love of god where did you get it?!
Honestly, looking at the shirt your wearing, I can Only think of Mitch Grassi and I'm living for it
... Where is that facial hair tho...
really great to hear you speaking so openly about cultural appropriation. seriously refreshing amongst fashion critics
That twin dress would look interesting with naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks inn it. lol the twin dress was very creative and show stopper in a good way. You can get very creative with that dress white and black good and evil and so on you get the picture .
Very inaccurate (inadvertent? Incompetent? computer?)English transcription of Luke’s comments. Not to be missed for laugh value.
I was SOOOO LOOKING forward to your commentary on Valentino! The show was simply STUNNING! It never ceases to amaze and awe inspire!
Well Done! Guo Pei, the sublime dress with nest, opening and bird. Let's just kneel and acknowledge we are in the presence of a Goddess who is an alchemist, visionary, otherworldly being. My heart is full!!!! Thank you Luke!
guys where is this shirt he's wearing from?? loved it!
